Understanding Ring Subscription Plans: An Overview

Ring offers several subscription options designed to work with their video doorbells, security cameras, and other smart home devices. These plans vary in price, features, and device coverage. Understanding what each plan includes helps you determine which option might fit your needs and budget.

Ring's subscription structure centers around two main types of plans: Basic and Plus. The Basic plan typically costs $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year. The Plus plan runs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. Some users may also encounter older plan names like "Video Recording Plan" or "Professional Monitoring," though these have largely been consolidated into the current structure.

The key difference between plans involves what features you receive. Basic plans provide video recording and storage for a limited time. Plus plans extend storage duration and add features like professional monitoring in some cases. All plans require an active internet connection to function properly.

Ring also offers month-to-month and annual payment options. Annual plans typically cost less per month when you calculate the per-month rate. For example, paying $39.99 annually for Basic breaks down to approximately $3.33 per month, compared to $3.99 for month-to-month billing.

Practical takeaway: List out all Ring devices you own or plan to own, then cross-reference this with what each plan covers. This step clarifies whether a Basic or Plus plan makes financial sense for your situation.

Ring Basic Plan: Features and Coverage Details

The Ring Basic plan serves as the entry-level subscription option. At $3.99 monthly or $39.99 annually, it provides essential recording and storage capabilities for your Ring devices. This plan works with all Ring video doorbells and most Ring cameras, including the Ring Video Doorbell (all generations), Ring Stick Up Cam, Ring Indoor Cam, Ring Spotlight Cam, and Ring Floodlight Cam.

Video storage under the Basic plan typically lasts 60 days in the cloud. This means footage from your cameras stores automatically and remains viewable for two months before the oldest recordings delete to make room for new content. If you need a specific video, you can save it permanently within that 60-day window before it expires.

The Basic plan includes standard motion detection alerts sent to your phone or other connected devices. When Ring cameras detect movement, you receive notifications and can view live video through the Ring app. You can also customize motion zones to reduce false alerts from trees, passing cars, or other movement outside your area of interest.

One important limitation: the Basic plan does not include professional monitoring. This means if someone triggers your doorbell or camera, you receive an alert, but Ring's monitoring center does not watch your footage or contact emergency services on your behalf. You handle all response actions yourself.

The Basic plan does include two-way talk features, allowing you to speak through your Ring device to visitors or package deliverers. It also provides package detection on some devices, alerting you when parcels arrive at your door.

Practical takeaway: The Basic plan works well for homeowners who want to monitor their property themselves and don't need professional emergency response. Calculate whether the 60-day storage window meets your typical needs before choosing this plan.

Ring Plus Plan: Extended Features and Professional Options

The Ring Plus plan costs $9.99 monthly or $99.99 annually, offering significant upgrades over the Basic option. The main advantage involves extended video storage and additional monitoring features not available on Basic plans.

Storage duration on the Plus plan extends to 180 days in the cloud—that's six months of accessible video history compared to two months on Basic. For households that want to retain footage longer before automatic deletion, this difference matters substantially. A 90-day extension provides more time to discover security incidents or retrieve important footage.

The Plus plan also offers professional monitoring capabilities in certain regions. Professional monitoring means Ring's monitoring center watches for alerts from your devices during times you specify. If motion or a doorbell press occurs, monitoring staff can view your footage and take actions like contacting emergency services if needed. This feature transforms Ring from a self-monitoring system to a partially managed security solution, though coverage varies by location.

Additional Plus plan features include advanced person detection on compatible devices. Rather than alerting you to any motion, the camera distinguishes between people, animals, and vehicles, reducing false notifications from pets or passing traffic. This technology uses artificial intelligence to analyze video content in real time.

The Plus plan covers unlimited devices within your Ring ecosystem. If you have multiple cameras, doorbells, or other Ring products, you pay one monthly or annual fee rather than subscribing to each device separately. This makes the Plus plan increasingly economical as you expand your Ring setup.

Practical takeaway: Calculate the number of Ring devices you own or plan to purchase. If you have three or more devices, the Plus plan's unlimited device coverage may cost less than paying Basic subscription fees separately, even before considering the additional features.

Device Compatibility and Subscription Requirements

Not all Ring devices require a subscription, but most benefit from having one. Understanding which devices work with which plans helps you make informed decisions about your setup.

Ring Video Doorbells work with all subscription tiers. Devices like the Video Doorbell (2nd Gen), Video Doorbell (3rd Gen), and Video Doorbell Pro all support Basic and Plus plans. Without a subscription, these doorbells still function—you receive notifications when someone presses the button—but video storage and cloud recording cease.

Ring Stick Up Cameras, Ring Indoor Cameras, Ring Spotlight Cameras, and Ring Floodlight Cameras all support both Basic and Plus plans. These cameras work across the same subscription structure as the doorbells, with plan levels determining storage duration and additional features.

Some older Ring products use legacy subscription structures. The Ring Video Doorbell Wired (older models) and certain discontinued devices may reference different plan names or pricing. If you own an older Ring device, the Ring app shows the subscription options available specifically for that hardware.

Ring also offers some products with no subscription requirement. The Ring Chime and Ring Chime Pro (which amplify your doorbell sound) do not require subscriptions. Similarly, some auxiliary devices like the Ring Smart Lighting work independently of video subscription plans.

The Ring app itself is always free to download and use. The subscription fees only apply if you want cloud storage, advanced features, and extended monitoring capabilities. You can use Ring devices with just the free app tier, though functionality becomes limited.

Practical takeaway: Before purchasing any Ring device, check its compatibility with current subscription plans. Ring's website lists which plans work with each product, preventing surprises after purchase.

Comparing Costs: Monthly Versus Annual Billing

Ring offers flexible payment options, allowing you to choose between monthly and annual billing. The financial difference between these approaches becomes significant over time, especially if you subscribe to multiple devices or maintain your subscription for several years.

Monthly billing for the Basic plan runs $3.99 per month. Over one year, this totals $47.88. The annual Basic plan costs $39.99 for the entire year—a savings of $7.89 annually. The per-month breakdown shows $3.33, representing a discount of about 16 percent compared to month-to-month billing.

The Plus plan shows larger absolute savings. Monthly billing costs $9.99 per month, totaling $119.88 annually. The annual Plus plan costs $99.99—saving you $19.89 per year. This represents about a 17 percent discount for committing to annual payment.

Over three years of subscription, choosing annual billing on Plus plans saves you approximately $60 compared to rolling month-to-month payments. Over five years, the savings exceed $100. These calculations assume prices remain constant, though subscription fees may change over time.

Monthly billing provides flexibility. If you cancel after two months on the Basic plan, you pay only $7.98. If you purchased annual billing, you would have paid $39.99 upfront with no refund option (Ring typically does not refund unused annual subscriptions). This trade-off between flexibility and savings matters depending on your commitment level.

Some users combine approaches: they pay annually for devices they plan to keep long-term and use month-to-month billing for cameras they might remove or replace soon. This strategy balances savings with flexibility
