Free Guide to Replacing Your Camper Awning

Understanding Your Camper Awning and When Replacement is Needed

A camper awning is the retractable fabric canopy that extends from the side of your RV or travel trailer. It provides shade and weather protection when you're parked at a campsite. Most awnings consist of a metal frame (usually aluminum), a motor or manual crank mechanism, and a fabric cover. The fabric is typically made from acrylic or vinyl material that resists UV damage and mildew.

Over time, awning fabric deteriorates from sun exposure, weather, and general wear. You might notice fading, small tears, or the fabric becoming stiff and brittle. Some signs that your awning needs replacement include:

• Visible tears or punctures in the fabric
• Fabric that no longer rolls or unrolls smoothly
• Mold or mildew that won't clean off
• Rust or corrosion on the aluminum frame
• Fabric that has become chalky or powdery to the touch
• Water leaking from seams or edges
• Motor that no longer functions (for motorized awnings)

Some damage can be repaired rather than requiring full replacement. Small tears (less than 6 inches) can sometimes be patched using repair kits available at RV supply stores. Seam leaks can be sealed with specialized tape or sealant. However, once fabric covers more than 15-20 percent of the awning area with damage, or if the frame is bent or severely rusted, replacement becomes the practical choice.

The cost of a new awning typically ranges from $400 to $1,500 depending on size and quality. Motorized awnings cost more than manual crank versions. A standard travel trailer awning might run $600-$800, while a larger Class A motorhome awning could reach $1,200 or more. Understanding what you have and what it needs helps you make an informed decision about whether repair or replacement makes sense for your situation.

Measuring Your Awning and Choosing the Right Replacement

Before ordering a replacement awning, you need accurate measurements of your current setup. Incorrect sizing is one of the most common mistakes people make, resulting in an awning that either doesn't fit properly or extends too far from your camper.

The most important measurement is the awning width, which is the distance the fabric extends from the camper wall when fully deployed. This is not the width of your RV, but rather the distance from the camper to the edge of the awning fabric. Standard widths range from 8 to 16 feet, though custom sizes are available. To measure this, extend your existing awning fully and measure from the side of the camper to the outer edge of the fabric. Write this measurement down carefully.

The second critical measurement is the awning length, which runs along the side of your camper. This is typically the measurement of the awning arm itself. Measure along the length of the metal rail that attaches to your RV. Common awning lengths are 12, 14, 16, or 18 feet. Some awnings are shorter, covering just a portion of the camper's side, while full-length awnings run the entire length of the living area.

When choosing a replacement, you also need to decide between manual and motorized models. Manual awnings use a hand crank to extend and retract. They are less expensive, more reliable, and require no electrical connections. Motorized awnings operate with a switch or remote control, offering convenience but requiring a 12-volt DC electrical connection and maintenance of the motor mechanism.

Consider the fabric material as well. Acrylic fabric is traditional and durable, offering good UV protection. It typically comes in various colors and patterns. Vinyl fabric is heavier and more waterproof but can be stiffer and may require more maintenance. Some manufacturers offer hybrid materials that combine benefits of both. Quality fabrics often carry warranties of 5-10 years against fading and UV damage.

Practical takeaway: Create a simple diagram of your awning with all measurements clearly labeled. Take photos of your current awning from multiple angles. Bring these materials when shopping or ordering to ensure the replacement will fit your specific camper model and mounting configuration.

Removing Your Old Awning: Step-by-Step Process

Removing an old awning is a manageable project for someone with basic mechanical skills and the right tools. The process typically takes 2-4 hours depending on whether you have help and how well you've prepared. Before starting, ensure your camper is parked on level ground and that you have access to the awning mounting area without obstructions.

Start by retracting the awning fully. If it's motorized, disconnect the power by removing the fuse or disconnecting the battery. For any awning with debris or leaves, clean the track and arms carefully. You'll need basic tools: wrenches (usually 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm), a drill for any stuck bolts, a screwdriver set, and possibly a socket wrench set. Having a helper makes the job significantly easier, as awning assemblies are heavy and awkward to maneuver.

The next step involves locating and removing all bolts that connect the awning frame to your camper. These are typically found at the top of the mounting brackets where the awning attaches to the camper's side. There are usually four to eight mounting points. Work around the awning, removing bolts one at a time, keeping them organized in a small container so you don't lose them. As you remove bolts, the awning will start to sag, so support it from below with a jack or have your helper hold it steady.

Once all bolts are removed, carefully lower the awning away from the camper. You may need to tilt it slightly to clear any roof edges or protrusions. Have your helper guide it down slowly. Place the awning on a clean, flat surface with the fabric side up. If you need to disassemble the fabric from the frame, locate the bolts or rivets holding the fabric to the aluminum track and remove them. This typically requires removing several dozen fasteners.

Before completely removing the old awning from your work area, inspect the mounting area on your camper. Look for any damage, rust, or bent metal. If the mounting surface is damaged, now is the time to repair or replace the mounting brackets. Clean off any rust with a wire brush, and inspect the bolt holes to ensure they're still usable. If bolt holes are damaged, you may need to drill new ones slightly offset from the originals.

Practical takeaway: Take photos at each stage of removal, especially showing where bolts attach and how the awning connects to your camper. This visual documentation makes reinstalling the new awning much more straightforward and reduces the chance of overlooking a connection point.

Installing Your New Awning: Attachment and Setup

Installing a new awning requires the same basic tools as removal but demands greater care to ensure proper alignment and secure attachment. Before beginning installation, lay out all components and verify you have everything: the awning frame, fabric, all bolts and hardware, and any motorized components or manual crank handles. Check the manufacturer's instructions specific to your awning model, as different brands may have slightly different installation sequences.

Start by positioning the new awning frame near your camper's mounting location. If you're installing new fabric on an old frame, or just replacing a frame, align the mounting brackets with the bolt holes on your camper. Insert bolts through the mounting brackets into your camper's frame, but don't tighten them fully yet. The awning should hang loosely at this point, allowing for adjustment.

Once the awning is roughly in place, check that it's level. The frame should be parallel to the ground when the camper is parked on level terrain. If one end is higher than the other, your awning won't roll smoothly and may leak. Adjust the mounting brackets slightly until the frame appears level, then gradually tighten all bolts in a cross pattern (tighten opposite corners in turn) to distribute tension evenly. Work slowly, tightening a quarter turn on each bolt before moving to the next one, rather than fully tightening one bolt at a time. This prevents the frame from warping.
