Free Guide to Removing Your Jellyfin Server

Understanding What Jellyfin Is and Why You Might Remove It

Jellyfin is a free media server software that runs on computers and allows you to store, organize, and stream movies, TV shows, music, and photos across your home network or the internet. It acts as a personal Netflix-like platform that you control entirely. The software was created as an open-source alternative to proprietary media servers, meaning the code is publicly available and anyone can review or modify it.

People use Jellyfin for various reasons. Some individuals want a centralized place to watch their personal movie collection. Others use it to organize home videos and family photos. Musicians and podcasters sometimes use Jellyfin to manage and share audio files. The software is particularly popular among people who want privacy and control over their media rather than relying on commercial streaming services.

There are several legitimate reasons why someone might decide to remove Jellyfin from their system. You might be upgrading your hardware and no longer need a dedicated media server. Perhaps you've switched to using commercial streaming services exclusively and no longer maintain a personal media library. Technical issues might make the software incompatible with your current setup. You could be consolidating your media management to a different platform or solution. Storage space limitations on your device might make running a media server impractical. Or you might simply have decided that media streaming isn't something you want to maintain anymore.

Understanding your specific reason for removal is the first step in the process. Different removal methods work better depending on whether you're moving to another system, completely abandoning media streaming, or troubleshooting performance issues. Taking time to identify why you're removing Jellyfin will help you decide what information to keep, what data to back up, and which removal method suits your situation best.

Practical Takeaway: Before beginning removal, write down your reason for uninstalling and identify what data you might want to preserve, such as server settings, user accounts, or metadata about your media library.

Backing Up Your Jellyfin Data Before Removal

Before removing Jellyfin, you should consider backing up your data. Even if you're certain you want to remove the software, preserving your configuration and metadata can be valuable. If you ever decide to reinstall Jellyfin or move to a similar media server, having this backup means you won't need to recreate all your settings and library information from scratch.

Jellyfin stores its data in a configuration folder that contains several types of information. This includes your server settings, user account details, library paths, metadata about your media files (like cover art and descriptions), watch history, and playlist information. On Windows computers, this folder is typically located in your AppData directory. On Linux systems, it's usually in the .local/share directory or /var/lib if Jellyfin was installed as a service. Mac users will find it in their Library folder.

The backup process is straightforward. First, locate the Jellyfin data folder on your system. You can find the exact location by checking Jellyfin's documentation or looking in your system's file manager. Once you've found it, copy the entire folder to an external hard drive or cloud storage service. This backup contains everything the server needs to function. The actual media files (your movies and music) are stored separately, so you don't need to back those up through this process unless you're concerned about losing them.

If you're running Jellyfin on a shared device or in a multi-user household, backing up the data also gives you a record of watch history, user preferences, and personalized settings for each family member. Some people maintain this information for reference even after removing the software. You might also want to take screenshots of your library organization and user accounts before removing the software, giving you a visual reference if you ever want to recreate the setup.

Consider storing your backup in at least two locations if the data is important to you. One backup on an external drive kept at home and another in cloud storage provides redundancy. Most backup processes take only a few minutes for Jellyfin's configuration folder, even though the total data size might be quite large.

Practical Takeaway: Locate and copy your Jellyfin data folder to external storage before proceeding with removal. The folder location varies by operating system, so check Jellyfin's documentation for your specific system.

Removing Jellyfin from Windows Systems

The process for removing Jellyfin from a Windows computer varies slightly depending on how you originally installed it. Most users install Jellyfin using an installer file, which makes removal straightforward through Windows' built-in uninstall feature. If you installed it differently—perhaps as a portable version or through a package manager—you may need to follow different steps.

For standard installations, begin by opening Windows Settings. Navigate to Apps, then Apps & Features (or Programs and Features in older Windows versions). Scroll through the list of installed programs until you find Jellyfin. Click on it once to select it, and you'll see an Uninstall button appear. Click Uninstall, and Windows will guide you through the removal process. The software will be removed from your system's Program Files directory, and shortcuts will be deleted from your start menu.

If Jellyfin was running as a Windows Service, you may need to stop the service before uninstalling. Open Services (you can search for this in the Windows search bar), find Jellyfin in the list, right-click it, and select Stop. This prevents the application from running in the background and blocking the uninstall process. After the service is stopped, proceed with the standard uninstall through Settings.

After the software is removed, you may want to delete the Jellyfin data folder if you don't plan to reinstall it. If you've already backed up this folder, you can safely delete it. Navigate to the location where your backup came from and delete the Jellyfin folder. If you skipped the backup step and think you might reinstall Jellyfin later, you can leave this folder in place—it won't interfere with your system.

If Jellyfin created any shortcuts on your desktop or in your taskbar, these will typically be removed during the uninstall process. However, if any remain, you can right-click them and delete them manually. You should also check the Windows Firewall settings to see if Jellyfin had exceptions created. Open Windows Defender Firewall, click "Allow an app through firewall," and look for Jellyfin entries. If you find any, select them and click "Remove." This cleans up your firewall rules completely.

Practical Takeaway: Use Windows Settings to uninstall Jellyfin through Apps & Features, then manually delete the data folder if you've backed it up and don't plan to reinstall the software.

Removing Jellyfin from Linux Systems

Linux users have several methods to remove Jellyfin depending on their installation method and distribution. The most common installation approaches on Linux are using package managers like apt (for Debian-based systems), yum or dnf (for Red Hat-based systems), or manual installation from source code. Each method has a corresponding removal process.

If you installed Jellyfin using your distribution's package manager (such as apt on Ubuntu), removal through the same package manager is the cleanest approach. Open a terminal and type the appropriate command for your system. For Debian-based systems like Ubuntu, use "sudo apt remove jellyfin" or "sudo apt purge jellyfin." The "purge" option removes both the software and its configuration files, while "remove" just deletes the software. For Red Hat-based systems, use "sudo dnf remove jellyfin" or "sudo yum remove jellyfin." These commands will remove the software package and stop any running services automatically.

If Jellyfin was installed as a service, the package manager removal will typically disable and stop the service as part of the uninstall process. However, you can manually check by running "sudo systemctl status jellyfin" in the terminal. If the service is still listed or running, you can stop it with "sudo systemctl stop jellyfin" and disable it from auto-starting with "sudo systemctl disable jellyfin."

For users who installed Jellyfin manually or from Docker containers, the removal process is different. If you used Docker, you would remove the container using "docker rm [container-name]" after stopping it with "docker stop [container-name]." If Jellyfin was installed manually in a directory on your system, you would simply delete
