Free Guide to Removing Programs From Windows 10

Understanding Windows 10 Program Removal Basics

Removing programs from Windows 10 is a straightforward process that most users can perform without special tools or technical knowledge. Programs installed on your computer take up storage space and can affect your system's performance. Windows 10 provides built-in features that let you uninstall applications you no longer use.

When you install a program on Windows 10, the operating system keeps track of all the files associated with that application. These files get stored in various locations on your hard drive. Some programs also create additional files in your system folders. When you remove a program through Windows 10's official removal process, the system attempts to delete all related files and reverse any changes the program made to your computer's settings.

Different types of programs may require slightly different removal methods. Programs you purchased from the Microsoft Store work differently than programs installed from third-party websites or CDs. Understanding these differences helps you remove programs more effectively. Some programs may leave behind small files or settings even after removal, but the main application files get deleted.

Statistics show that the average Windows 10 user has between 30 and 50 installed programs, with many of these being used infrequently. Removing unused programs can free up storage space equivalent to several gigabytes, depending on which applications you uninstall. For example, removing a single large game or productivity suite might free up 5 to 20 gigabytes of storage space.

Practical takeaway: Before removing any program, think about whether you actually use it. If you haven't opened an application in several months, it's likely a good candidate for removal.

Using Settings to Remove Programs

The Settings app in Windows 10 provides the most straightforward way to remove most programs. This method works for applications installed through the Microsoft Store and many third-party applications. To access this feature, open the Settings app by pressing the Windows key and typing "Settings," then selecting the Settings app from the results.

Once Settings opens, click on "Apps" in the left sidebar. You'll see a section labeled "Apps & features" that displays a list of all programs installed on your computer. This list shows the program name, version number, and the amount of storage space each program uses. You can scroll through this list to find programs you want to remove. The list is organized alphabetically by default, but you can sort it by size to see which programs use the most storage space.

To remove a program, click on it in the list and then click the "Uninstall" button that appears. Windows 10 may ask you to confirm the removal. Some programs will launch their own uninstaller window with additional options. For example, you might see checkboxes asking whether you want to keep certain program files or settings. In most cases, selecting the default option to remove everything is the best choice unless you have a specific reason to keep certain files.

The Settings method works well for approximately 85 percent of programs on most Windows 10 computers. The remaining programs may require different removal methods because they were installed using older installation methods or custom installers. If you click on a program and don't see an "Uninstall" button, try the alternative methods described in the following sections.

Practical takeaway: Check the storage size listed next to each program. Programs using several gigabytes of space should be your priority for removal if you're trying to free up storage room.

Using Control Panel for Program Removal

The Control Panel contains an older but still functional program removal tool called "Programs and Features." This method works particularly well for older programs that may not appear properly in the Settings app. To open Control Panel, click the Windows Start button, type "Control Panel," and select it from the results. Alternatively, you can right-click the Windows Start button and select "Control Panel" if that option appears.

Inside Control Panel, locate "Programs" or "Programs and Features" depending on your Windows 10 version. Click on it to see a complete list of installed programs. This list may display different programs than what appears in the Settings app, particularly older applications. The Programs and Features window shows installation dates and program publishers, which can help you identify programs you no longer recognize.

To remove a program using Control Panel, click on it once to select it, then click the "Uninstall" button at the top of the window. Some programs provide an "Uninstall/Change" button instead, which may give you options for modifying the installation. If a program offers modification options, you'll typically see a window asking whether you want to remove, repair, or modify the program. Selecting "Remove" will uninstall the program entirely.

This method sometimes reveals programs that you didn't knowingly install. Manufacturer software, system utilities, and other pre-installed programs often appear in this list. However, be cautious about removing programs you don't recognize. Some programs that may seem unnecessary actually support other applications or hardware devices. When in doubt, research the program name online before removing it, or move on to removing programs you definitely don't use.

Practical takeaway: Use Control Panel to access the installation dates of your programs. This helps you identify programs installed a long time ago that you may have forgotten about completely.

Handling Programs That Won't Uninstall

Occasionally, you may encounter a program that won't uninstall using the standard methods. This happens when the program's uninstaller files become corrupted, when security software blocks the removal, or when the program installation was incomplete. When a program refuses to uninstall, several alternative approaches can work.

One method involves using the built-in System Restore feature to restore your computer to a point before the program was installed. To use System Restore, press the Windows key and type "System Restore," then select "Create a restore point" from the results. In the window that opens, click "System Restore" to view available restore points. If a restore point exists from before you installed the problematic program, you can select it to restore your system. This method effectively removes the program by reverting your computer to an earlier state, but it may also undo other changes you made after that restore point was created.

Another approach involves manually removing the program's files. You can navigate to the Program Files folder on your hard drive by opening File Explorer and going to "C:\Program Files" or "C:\Program Files (x86)". Look for a folder with the program's name and delete it. However, this method may leave behind registry entries and other scattered files. Before attempting manual deletion, make sure the program is not currently running and that you have administrator rights on your computer.

Third-party uninstaller programs exist that specialize in thorough program removal, though these are optional. Programs like Revo Uninstaller or IObit Uninstaller can sometimes remove stubborn applications by finding and deleting leftover files in multiple locations. These tools scan your computer after running the standard uninstaller to locate and remove remaining files. Many of these third-party tools offer free versions with basic functionality, though advanced features may require payment.

Practical takeaway: Before attempting manual file deletion, check whether the program is running by opening Task Manager (right-click the taskbar and select "Task Manager"). End any running processes related to the program, then attempt removal again.

Removing Microsoft Store Apps

Applications installed from the Microsoft Store uninstall through the Settings app, but the process has a few specific details. Microsoft Store apps are more isolated from your system than traditional programs, which means they typically don't leave files scattered throughout your computer. This makes Store apps generally easier to remove completely.

To remove a Microsoft Store app, open Settings, click "Apps," then click "Apps & features." Find the app you want to remove and click on it. Click the "Uninstall" button, then click "Uninstall" again in the confirmation window. The app removes from your computer within seconds. Because Store apps are contained systems, there's typically no uninstaller dialog or additional options to select.

Some Microsoft Store apps come pre-installed on Windows 10 and are designed to support other system features. For example, the Photos app integrates with the Windows file system, and the Mail app connects to email accounts. You can remove most pre-installed Store apps without affecting Windows 10 functionality. However, certain core apps like Settings, File Explorer, and Cortana cannot be removed because Windows 10 depends on them.

If you remove a Microsoft Store app and later want it back, you can reinstall it
