Free Guide to Removing Apps From Your LG TV

Understanding Your LG TV's App Management System

LG televisions come with a built-in system for managing applications, similar to how smartphones let you organize and remove programs you no longer use. Your LG TV likely runs on either webOS or NetCast, which are LG's operating systems designed specifically for smart televisions. Understanding how these systems work helps you maintain your TV's performance and storage space.

Every LG TV has a home screen where apps appear as icons or tiles. These applications range from streaming services like Netflix and Hulu to news apps, weather applications, and games. Over time, you may accumulate apps you rarely or never use. Removing these unused applications can help your TV run more smoothly, free up storage space, and reduce clutter on your home screen.

The process of removing apps from an LG TV differs slightly depending on your TV model and the year it was manufactured. Older models from 2015 and earlier typically use NetCast, while newer models from 2016 onward generally use webOS. Both systems allow you to remove apps, but the steps vary. Additionally, some apps come pre-installed on your TV and cannot be removed, though you can hide them from view on your home screen.

Your TV's remote control is your primary tool for managing apps. The magic remote, which LG introduced around 2014, uses a pointer system similar to a computer mouse. However, even standard IR remotes work for app management. Understanding which buttons control navigation and selection on your specific remote model makes the removal process straightforward.

Practical Takeaway: Spend a few minutes identifying which operating system your LG TV uses (check your manual or TV settings) and locate your home screen. This foundation knowledge prevents confusion when following removal instructions specific to your model.

How to Remove Apps on LG WebOS TVs (2016 and Newer)

Most LG televisions manufactured from 2016 onward use the webOS operating system, which features a user-friendly interface for app management. The process for removing apps on webOS is consistent across most models, though minor visual differences may appear depending on your specific year and TV version.

To remove an app on webOS, first navigate to your home screen by pressing the Home button on your remote. Your home screen displays all available apps in rows. Use your remote's directional buttons or pointer to highlight the app you want to remove. Once selected, press and hold the OK or Select button on your remote for approximately two to three seconds. A menu should appear with options including "Remove" or "Delete." Select this option, and the system will prompt you to confirm the removal. Press OK to finalize the deletion.

Some LG webOS TVs offer an alternative method through the app store. You can access the LG Content Store (or App Store) from your home screen, search for the installed app, and select "Remove" from the app's information page. This method works particularly well if you cannot locate an app on your home screen or if the standard removal method does not function as expected.

Certain apps come pre-installed by LG and cannot be removed through standard deletion processes. Examples include the LG Remote app, Settings, and some system utilities. If you find an app you cannot delete, you can hide it from your home screen instead. To hide an app, select it and choose "Hide" from the menu rather than "Remove." The app remains on your system but no longer appears on your home screen, reducing visual clutter.

WebOS also allows you to rearrange your home screen. After hiding or removing unwanted apps, you can reorganize remaining apps by selecting them and moving them to different positions. This customization helps you create a home screen that reflects your viewing habits and preferences.

Practical Takeaway: If removal does not work for a pre-installed app, use the "Hide" function instead. This achieves the same visual result of a cleaner home screen without requiring system-level changes your TV may not allow.

How to Remove Apps on LG NetCast TVs (2015 and Older)

LG televisions manufactured in 2015 and earlier typically run the NetCast operating system. While older than webOS, NetCast still provides functional app management capabilities. The removal process differs from webOS but follows similar logical steps that work across most NetCast models.

On NetCast TVs, press the Home or Smart button on your remote to access your home screen. Navigate using your remote's directional arrows to find the application you wish to remove. Once you have highlighted the desired app, press the OK or Select button. A menu should appear. Look for options such as "Delete," "Remove," or "Uninstall." Select your choice, and the system will confirm your action. Press OK again to complete the removal process.

If the standard removal method does not work on your NetCast TV, you may need to access the application manager through your TV's settings. Press the Home button, then navigate to "Settings" or "Setup." Look for options labeled "Application Manager," "Manage Applications," or "Apps." Within this menu, you should see a list of all installed applications. Select the app you want to remove and choose the delete or uninstall option.

NetCast TVs released in different years may have slightly different menu layouts. Some 2013-2015 models use a different home screen design than 2011-2012 models. If you cannot locate the removal option in your home screen, checking your TV's manual or searching for your specific model number online can provide precise instructions tailored to your version.

Like webOS, NetCast includes some system apps that cannot be removed. These typically include settings applications, the app store, and LG's proprietary services. For these protected apps, most NetCast systems allow you to hide them from your home screen using a "Hide App" or similar option within the app menu.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your TV's model number (found on a sticker on the back of your TV or in the settings menu) handy. This number helps you find manufacturer documentation with exact instructions if you get stuck during removal.

Freeing Up Storage Space and Improving TV Performance

Removing unused applications provides tangible benefits for your LG TV's overall performance. Smart TVs have limited storage space compared to computers or smartphones. A typical LG TV has between 8 and 16 gigabytes of total storage, though newer premium models may have more. When storage becomes full or nearly full, your TV may experience slower performance, longer load times for apps, and occasional freezing or crashes.

Each application occupies a certain amount of storage space. Large streaming apps like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, or Disney+ can each use between 50 and 300 megabytes depending on the version and features. If you have ten to fifteen unused apps installed, you might be using 1 to 2 gigabytes of storage unnecessarily. Removing these apps frees this space for system functions and improves your TV's responsiveness.

Beyond storage, removing unused apps reduces the processing load on your TV's processor. Every app running in the background uses computing resources. When you boot up your TV or access the home screen, the system must manage all installed applications, even those you do not use. A TV with fifty apps may run noticeably slower than one with only twenty frequently used apps. Removing the forty unused apps lightens this computational burden.

Additionally, fewer installed apps mean fewer potential software conflicts. Occasionally, newly updated apps can cause compatibility issues with other system components. A leaner app collection reduces the likelihood of encountering such problems. If your TV begins experiencing unusual behavior or stability issues, removing recently updated or rarely used apps may resolve the problem.

You can check your TV's storage usage through the settings menu. Navigate to Settings, then look for options like "Device Information," "Storage," or "System Information." This menu shows you how much storage your TV is currently using and how much remains available. If your TV is using more than 80% of its available storage, removing unused apps should improve performance noticeably.

Practical Takeaway: Before removing apps randomly, check your storage usage in settings. If storage usage is below 50%, you may not see performance improvements from app removal. However, removing apps you never use always results in a cleaner, more organized home screen.
