Free Guide to Removing a Windows Update

Understanding Windows Updates and Removal Basics

Windows updates are software packages released by Microsoft to improve your computer's performance, fix security problems, and add new features. Most updates happen automatically in the background, but sometimes you may want to remove an update if it causes problems with your system or specific programs you use regularly.

Removing an update is different from delaying one. When you remove an update, you're uninstalling it completely from your computer. Your system will not automatically reinstall that same update unless you manually install it again or unless Windows specifically requires it for security reasons. Some updates are critical security patches, and removing these may leave your computer vulnerable to threats.

There are several reasons people remove updates. An update might cause a program to stop working correctly, make your internet connection unstable, slow down your computer noticeably, or conflict with specialized software like medical devices, manufacturing equipment, or older business applications. Before removing any update, consider whether the problem you're experiencing is truly caused by the update or if another issue might be responsible.

Windows update removals work differently depending on which version of Windows you use (Windows 10 or Windows 11) and how recent the update is. Updates from the past month or two are easier to remove than older updates. Your computer automatically stores the files needed to remove recent updates, but this storage space has limits.

Practical Takeaway: Before removing an update, write down the specific date the update installed and what problem started happening afterward. This information helps you determine if the update truly caused your issue and will be useful if you need to contact Microsoft support for guidance.

Accessing the Settings Menu to Remove Updates

The main way to remove updates from Windows 10 and Windows 11 is through your Settings menu. This method works for most regular updates released monthly or quarterly. To start, open your Settings application by clicking the Start button and typing "Settings," then pressing Enter. You can also press Windows key + I on your keyboard as a shortcut.

Once Settings opens, look for the option labeled "System" or "Update & Security" depending on your Windows version. In Windows 10, this option appears on the left side of the Settings window. In Windows 11, the System option is typically the first option you see. Click on this option to expand the menu.

Next, look for "Windows Update" in the menu options. You should see several sub-options appear, including "Update history" or "View update history." Click on this option to see a list of all updates installed on your computer, arranged by date with the most recent at the top. Each update shows the installation date and a brief description of what it addresses.

Finding the specific update you want to remove requires looking at this list carefully. Updates are identified by KB numbers (Knowledge Base numbers) and sometimes include descriptions like "Security Update," "Quality Update," or "Feature Update." Write down the KB number of the update you want to remove. This number looks like "KB5034127" or similar.

If your Settings menu looks different than described here, you may be using an older Windows version. Windows 7 and earlier versions use different removal procedures that involve the Control Panel instead of Settings. For Windows 7, open Control Panel and search for "uninstall updates" to find the proper removal window.

Practical Takeaway: Take a screenshot of the update you plan to remove before proceeding. This creates a record of which update caused your problem, which is helpful if you need to troubleshoot further or explain the issue to someone else.

Using Uninstall Updates Option in Settings

After you've located the update you want to remove in the Update History section, Windows 10 and 11 provide a direct uninstall option. Look for a button or link labeled "Uninstall updates" near the top of the Update History window. Click this option to open a new window showing installed updates in a list format.

This window displays updates differently than the Update History view. Instead of seeing dates and brief descriptions, you see a more detailed list with the update's KB number, installation date, and sometimes the update's full name. The list may be long if your computer is several months or years old. Scroll through the list to find the specific update you identified earlier by its KB number.

Once you find the update, click on it to select it. The update will highlight to show it's selected. Then look for a button labeled "Uninstall" or "Remove" that should appear at the top of the window or to the right of the selected update. Click this button to begin removing the update.

Windows will show a confirmation dialog asking if you want to uninstall this update. This confirmation exists as a safety measure because removing certain updates can affect your computer's stability. Read the confirmation message carefully. If it includes any warnings about critical security updates or system stability, consider whether you truly need to remove this update or if you should investigate other solutions to your problem.

After you confirm the removal, Windows begins uninstalling the update. This process typically takes a few minutes. During this time, do not turn off your computer or close the Settings window. When the uninstall completes, Windows may ask you to restart your computer. It's important to restart your system as soon as possible after removing an update to ensure the removal completes fully.

Practical Takeaway: Schedule update removals for times when you don't need your computer, since you'll need to restart it afterward. Avoid removing updates right before an important meeting or when you're relying on your computer for work.

Removing Updates Through Control Panel (Alternative Method)

For Windows 10 users who prefer the traditional Control Panel interface or have difficulty finding the Settings method, Control Panel offers an alternative way to remove updates. Open Control Panel by clicking the Start button, typing "Control Panel," and pressing Enter. Alternatively, in Windows 10, you can right-click the Start button and select "Windows Terminal (Admin)" or "PowerShell (Admin)," though this requires more technical knowledge.

Once Control Panel opens, look for "Programs" or "Programs and Features" depending on your view settings. If you see different category names, look for an option related to installed programs. Click on "Programs and Features" to see a list of installed software and updates.

At the top left of the Programs and Features window, you should see a link labeled "View installed updates" or similar wording. Click this link to see a specialized list showing only Windows updates, not regular software programs. This view filters out your installed applications and shows only system updates, making it easier to find the specific update you want to remove.

The installed updates window displays updates organized by installation date. Look through the list for the KB number you recorded earlier. Each update shows its KB number prominently. Once you locate it, right-click on that update and select "Uninstall" from the menu that appears. Some systems may show an "Uninstall" button at the top of the window instead.

The uninstall process through Control Panel works identically to the Settings method. You'll receive a confirmation prompt, the removal will take several minutes, and you'll need to restart your computer. Control Panel's method may feel more familiar to users who have worked with older Windows versions, but both methods accomplish the same result.

Practical Takeaway: Control Panel access remains available in Windows 10 and 11 even though Settings is the newer interface. If Settings feels confusing, Control Panel provides the same update removal functionality in a format some users find more straightforward.

Preventing Automatic Reinstallation of Removed Updates

One common frustration occurs when a user removes an update, but Windows automatically reinstalls it during the next automatic update cycle. This happens because Windows Update runs on a schedule and attempts to keep your system current. Preventing reinstallation requires changing how Windows handles the specific update you removed.

The most direct method involves pausing Windows Update temporarily. In Windows Settings under "Update & Security" or "System," find the Windows Update section and look for "Pause updates" or "Advanced options." This feature lets you pause updates for up to 35 days in Windows 10 or 5 weeks in Windows 11. This gives you time to determine whether the removed update was truly causing your problem.

After the pause period ends, Windows will resume automatic updates. This doesn't prevent the problematic update from reinstalling, but it gives you breathing room to test your computer and gather information about whether the update actually caused your issue. When the pause period is about to expire, you
