Free Guide to Proton VPN's Basic Plan Features

What Proton VPN's Basic Plan Includes

Proton VPN offers a Basic Plan that operates at no cost to users. This plan provides access to VPN technology, which creates an encrypted connection between your device and Proton's servers. Understanding what features come with this tier helps you determine if the service meets your needs.

The Basic Plan includes connections through Proton VPN's server network. According to Proton's service information, the Basic Plan grants access to servers in three countries: the United States, Netherlands, and Japan. This means you can route your internet connection through any of these three locations, which can affect how your location appears to websites and services you visit online.

One notable aspect of the Basic Plan is the bandwidth limitation. Proton VPN's Basic Plan provides limited data usage compared to their paid tiers. The specific bandwidth restrictions mean users cannot download or stream extremely large amounts of data during a single session or billing period. This contrasts with Proton VPN Plus and Proton VPN Pro plans, which offer either higher bandwidth caps or unlimited data.

The Basic Plan supports one simultaneous connection. This means you can use the VPN on one device at a time. If you want to protect multiple devices simultaneously—such as your laptop and smartphone at the same time—you would need to upgrade to a paid plan that permits multiple concurrent connections.

Users receive encryption of their internet traffic while using the Basic Plan. The encryption protocol helps prevent others on the same network from observing your browsing activity or data transmission. This represents a core function of VPN technology regardless of the plan tier.

Practical Takeaway: Before setting up the Basic Plan, consider whether you need connections from countries outside the three available options, whether you plan to use the VPN on multiple devices simultaneously, or whether your usage would exceed typical bandwidth limitations. These factors influence whether the Basic Plan matches your requirements.

How to Create a Proton Account and Set Up Basic Plan

Beginning with Proton VPN requires creating an account on Proton's website. The process involves visiting Proton's main site and locating the VPN section, then selecting the option to create a new account. You will need to provide an email address that serves as your login identifier and recovery method.

The account creation process asks you to establish a password. Proton recommends using a strong password—one that combines uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Your password protects access to your account, so choosing something difficult to guess matters for security purposes. You should store this password somewhere safe and not share it with others.

After entering your email and password, Proton sends a verification message to your email address. You must open that email and follow the link or enter the code provided to confirm your email ownership. This step prevents others from creating accounts using your email address without permission.

Once your account is verified, you can log into the Proton VPN website or application. The system recognizes you as a Basic Plan user automatically when you create a free account. No additional steps to select or activate the Basic Plan are necessary—it represents the default offering for new accounts without payment.

Installing the VPN application comes next. Proton provides VPN client software for various devices including Windows computers, Mac computers, iPhones, and Android phones. You locate the appropriate version for your device and install it following standard software installation procedures for your operating system. The application uses your account login information to authenticate when you launch it.

Configuration settings in the application allow you to specify preferences such as which server location to use when connecting. Most users find the default settings work adequately for general use, though some features like protocol selection may be adjusted in settings menus.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your account email and password in a secure location before beginning setup. Keep this information private and retrieve it if you forget your login details or want to use Proton VPN on another device.

Understanding VPN Encryption and How Proton VPN Protects Your Data

A Virtual Private Network operates by encrypting your internet traffic and routing it through remote servers. This process creates a secure tunnel between your device and Proton's infrastructure. Websites and online services receive requests that appear to originate from Proton's server location rather than your actual physical location or home network.

Encryption represents the primary protection mechanism. When you use Proton VPN, data traveling between your device and Proton's servers becomes encoded into a format that cannot be read without the correct decryption key. This means that even if someone intercepts your data traffic on your local network—such as on public WiFi—they would only see encrypted information rather than readable passwords, messages, or browsing history.

Proton VPN implements protocols including IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN protocols that handle this encryption. These protocols represent established, tested methods used across the VPN industry. Different protocols offer varying balances between connection speed and security strength. The Basic Plan provides access to these protocols though options may differ from paid tiers.

The VPN's server location matters for your perceived online location. When connected to a Proton VPN server in the Netherlands, websites will see your connection as originating from that country rather than wherever you physically are. This affects which content you can access and which regional versions of websites you receive. Services that restrict access by geographic location operate based on this server information.

Your internet service provider cannot easily see which websites you visit when you use VPN encryption. Your ISP observes that you have a VPN connection active and data moving through it, but the specific websites and services within that encrypted tunnel remain hidden from their view. This differs significantly from unencrypted browsing, where ISPs can track which websites you access.

One important limitation: Proton VPN protects the connection between your device and Proton's servers, but once data reaches Proton's infrastructure and passes through to destination servers on the open internet, the encryption ends. The destination websites still know who is contacting them based on the server location information.

Practical Takeaway: Think of VPN encryption like sending a sealed envelope through the mail versus sending a postcard. The envelope hides the letter's contents, but the address on the outside remains visible. Similarly, VPN encryption protects what you're doing but doesn't hide which countries' servers you're connecting through.

Server Locations and Geographic Restrictions on the Basic Plan

The Basic Plan provides server access in three geographic locations: United States, Netherlands, and Japan. These represent the only country options available for free users. Each country location contains multiple servers that distribute traffic, but all free tier servers fall within these three nations.

The United States servers allow you to connect and receive a US-based IP address. This proves useful if you want to access services that restrict content to US residents or if you wish websites to perceive your connection as originating from America. The United States represents the most commonly used server location on Proton's free tier.

Netherlands servers provide a European connection point. Connecting to this location makes your traffic appear to originate from Europe. This location helps users access European services or content restricted to that region. The Netherlands location is often selected by users outside Europe who want a European-based connection.

Japan servers represent the third option, offering an Asia-Pacific connection location. This option helps users who want an Asian-region IP address or who wish to access content restricted to that geographic area. Japan's location provides geographic diversity for the Basic Plan's limited server options.

The limitation to three countries means Basic Plan users cannot connect through Proton VPN's servers in other nations like Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, or many others where Proton operates paid tier servers. If your needs require a specific country not listed, you would need a paid subscription to access those locations.

Some users select servers based on connection speed rather than the geographic location's practical utility. The US server often provides faster speeds for users located in North America. European users might experience better speeds through the Netherlands option. Users in Asia might find the Japan server delivers lower latency. Connection speeds vary based on your physical location and network conditions.

Practical Takeaway: Before committing to the Basic Plan, verify that at least one of the three available countries serves your needs. If you need servers in multiple other countries, consider researching whether a paid plan fits your situation better.
