Free Guide to PayPal In-Store Payment Options
Understanding PayPal In-Store Payment Basics
PayPal in-store payment options allow customers to pay for purchases at physical retail locations using their PayPal account instead of a credit card or cash. This guide provides information about how these payment methods work and what you might encounter when shopping.

PayPal offers several ways to pay in stores. The most common method involves using a mobile phone with the PayPal app installed. When you're ready to pay at checkout, you can show the cashier a QR code generated through your app, or you can tap your phone on a contactless payment reader if your device supports near-field communication (NFC) technology. Some stores also accept PayPal through their own branded payment apps or loyalty programs that have integrated PayPal as a payment option.
According to PayPal's 2023 data, approximately 29 million consumers in the United States use PayPal for in-store purchases. This represents about 9% of the adult population. The growth reflects increasing consumer comfort with mobile payment methods and retailer investment in these technologies.
The basic process works like this: before you shop, you load your PayPal account with funds through a connected bank account, credit card, or debit card. When you reach the register, you open your PayPal app and select the "Pay in Store" or similar option. The app generates a unique code that the cashier scans, or you hold your phone near a payment terminal. The transaction processes through PayPal's system rather than directly through your bank.
Takeaway: PayPal in-store payments are a mobile-based alternative to traditional payment methods. You can use them at retailers that display PayPal signage or through their branded apps.
How PayPal QR Code Payments Work at Retail Locations
QR code payments represent one of the most accessible in-store PayPal methods because they require minimal equipment beyond a smartphone and internet connection. This technology has become increasingly common in U.S. retail as stores seek to offer contactless payment alternatives.

When you choose to pay with a PayPal QR code, your PayPal app displays a unique barcode that changes with each transaction. This code contains encrypted information about your payment account and the transaction amount. The cashier uses a standard barcode scanner—the same type used for product barcodes—to read your code. The information transfers to PayPal's servers, which process the payment and deduct the amount from your PayPal balance or connected payment method.
The QR code method offers several practical advantages. First, it doesn't require the retailer to have special equipment beyond a barcode scanner. Many stores already own multiple scanners, so adding PayPal support is relatively inexpensive. Second, the transaction happens quickly—typically within 10 to 15 seconds. Third, you receive immediate confirmation on your phone showing the payment was completed, the amount charged, and the merchant name.
Some retailers have adopted their own versions of QR code payments. For example, Walmart's app allows you to add PayPal as a payment method and generate a QR code at checkout. Similarly, various grocery chains, pharmacies, and convenience stores have implemented similar systems. The specific process may vary slightly between retailers, but the basic concept remains the same: scan the code, process the payment, receive confirmation.
One important detail: QR code payments require an active internet connection on your phone. If your cellular signal is weak or you're in an area with poor Wi-Fi, the payment may not process. For this reason, it's wise to test the connection before you reach the register.
Takeaway: QR code payments offer a quick, contactless way to pay using existing store technology. The process takes seconds and provides immediate confirmation on your phone.
Contactless NFC Tap Payments Using PayPal
Near-field communication (NFC) technology allows your smartphone to communicate with payment terminals by holding it within a few inches of the device. This "tap to pay" method represents the fastest in-store PayPal payment option available today. Unlike QR codes, NFC requires no scanning step and works through a secure wireless connection.

To use NFC payments, your phone must support the technology and have it enabled. Most modern smartphones manufactured after 2015 include NFC capabilities, including iPhones (iPhone 6 and newer) and Android devices from major manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and others. You can check whether your phone has NFC by looking in your phone's settings under "Wireless" or "Connectivity." If your device doesn't support NFC, you can still use QR code payments.
When you use PayPal NFC payments, your phone communicates directly with the payment terminal. You open your PayPal app, select the payment option, hold your phone near the terminal (typically within 1 to 2 inches), and the transaction processes. The payment terminal displays the amount, you confirm the transaction on your phone, and you receive confirmation. The entire process takes 5 to 10 seconds.
Security represents a key advantage of NFC payments. Unlike swiping a physical card, NFC doesn't transmit your actual account numbers. Instead, PayPal creates a tokenized version—essentially a code that represents your payment without exposing your real banking information. This means even if someone intercepts the wireless signal, they cannot access your financial details. Additionally, NFC payments require authentication on your phone, such as fingerprint recognition or Face ID, adding another security layer.
Adoption of NFC acceptance in U.S. retail has grown substantially. As of 2024, approximately 85% of card-accepting retailers in the United States support contactless payments. This includes major chains like Target, Best Buy, Walgreens, and most grocery stores. Payment terminals in these locations can read NFC signals from PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other digital wallets.
Takeaway: NFC tap payments offer the fastest checkout experience and higher security than physical cards, but your phone must support the technology and have NFC enabled.
Using PayPal Through Retailer Apps and Loyalty Programs
Many major retailers have integrated PayPal into their own shopping apps and loyalty programs, creating a third pathway for in-store payments. This approach combines shopping convenience with payment flexibility and often provides additional rewards or discounts.

When a retailer integrates PayPal into their app, you can add PayPal as a stored payment method within that app's settings. When you shop in the store, you use the retailer's app to create a digital receipt or payment code before or at checkout. At the register, you either show the cashier a code on your phone or provide a phone number that the cashier looks up in their system. The payment processes through PayPal without you needing to open a separate PayPal app.
Several major retailers use this model. Target's app allows customers to add a PayPal account and pay through the app at checkout. Whole Foods accepts PayPal through Amazon Pay (since Amazon owns Whole Foods). Ulta Beauty accepts PayPal in their app and at stores through their loyalty program. These implementations vary in their exact mechanics, but they all accomplish the same goal: letting you pay with PayPal without fumbling with multiple apps.
The loyalty program integration adds another dimension. Some retailers offer bonus points or discounts when you pay with specific methods. For example, a store's loyalty program might award 2x points on PayPal purchases during certain weeks. You benefit from both the payment convenience and the rewards accumulation. This means monitoring your preferred retailer's app for any PayPal-specific promotions can save you money over time.
To use retailer-integrated PayPal payments, you typically need to create an account with that retailer's app, add your PayPal account as a payment method, and ensure your PayPal account has sufficient funds or has a connected bank account or card. The setup takes about 5 minutes the first time, then becomes automatic for future visits.
One practical consideration: you'll need to check which retailers near you actually support PayPal through their apps. Not all retailers have implemented this, and availability varies by region. You can usually find this information in the retailer's app settings under "Payment Methods" or by contacting their customer service.
Takeaway: Retailer apps and loyalty programs often include PayPal as a payment option, sometimes with additional rewards when you use it.
