Free Guide to Paying Yonkers Parking Tickets

Understanding Yonkers Parking Violations and Citations

A parking ticket in Yonkers, New York is a civil infraction issued by the City's Department of Public Safety or authorized enforcement officers when a vehicle violates local parking regulations. These violations range from parking in prohibited zones to exceeding meter time limits or parking without proper permits. Understanding what constitutes a violation is the first step toward responding appropriately.

Yonkers parking violations fall into several categories. Meter violations occur when you don't pay required fees or exceed the time limit at a parking meter. No-parking zone violations happen when you park in areas marked with "No Parking" signs, fire hydrants, bus stops, or handicapped spaces without authorization. Permit violations occur when you park in spaces requiring specific permits—such as residential parking permits or commercial loading zones—without displaying the appropriate documentation. Street cleaning violations happen when you park on streets during posted cleaning hours. Double parking, blocking driveways, and parking too close to fire hydrants all constitute separate violations.

When an enforcement officer observes a violation, they issue a Parking Violation Notice (PVN). This ticket includes specific information: the violation code, the date and time of the infraction, the street location, the license plate number, and the vehicle identification number. The notice also displays the fine amount and instructions for responding. Different violation codes carry different fine amounts. For example, expired meter violations typically cost $65, while no-parking zone violations may cost between $65 and $115 depending on the specific circumstances.

The City of Yonkers issued approximately 285,000 parking violations in 2022, making parking enforcement a significant municipal operation. Understanding these basics helps you determine whether you received a legitimate citation and what your options might be for response.

Takeaway: Keep your parking ticket in a safe place and note the violation code—this code determines the fine amount and the specific regulation you allegedly violated.

How to Read and Verify Your Parking Ticket

Your parking ticket contains essential information you must review carefully before taking any action. The document should clearly display your vehicle's license plate number, the violation code, the date and time of the infraction, the street address where the violation occurred, and the fine amount due. Examining each element helps you determine whether the ticket was issued correctly and whether you have grounds to contest it.

Start by verifying the license plate number. Tickets are sometimes issued to the wrong vehicle, particularly in busy areas or when handwriting is unclear. If the plate number doesn't match your vehicle, this is grounds for dismissal. Next, check the violation code and description. The code number should match the written description of the violation. For instance, code 408 typically refers to expired meter violations, while code 402 refers to no-parking zone violations. If the code and description don't align, this discrepancy should be documented if you contest the ticket.

Review the date and time of the alleged violation. Cross-reference this with your own records—where was your vehicle at that specific date and time? Do you have receipts, receipts for meter payment, or other documentation proving you weren't parked illegally? The street address on the ticket should match where you parked. If you parked on a different street or in a different location than listed, this constitutes an error on the ticket.

Examine the fine amount. Yonkers parking fines typically range from $45 to $115 depending on the violation type. The ticket should display the base fine and any applicable late fees if this is a repeat violation or past-due ticket. Some tickets issued in error may show inconsistent fine amounts. Additionally, check whether the ticket includes a ticket number and an officer ID number. These details are important if you need to contest the violation—they provide a record you can reference when communicating with the Department of Public Safety.

Takeaway: Create a checklist when reviewing your ticket: verify the license plate, confirm the violation code matches the description, check the date and time, validate the street address, and note the fine amount and ticket number.

To contest a parking ticket, you must file a formal Notice of Objection with the Department of Public Safety within 30 days of the ticket's issue date. This deadline is strict—objections filed after 30 days are typically not accepted. Your Notice of Objection should be submitted in writing and include your ticket number, license plate number, the date of the violation, and a clear explanation of why you believe the ticket should be dismissed. Be specific and factual in your explanation. For example, if you received a meter violation but paid for the meter, explain this and provide documentation. If you received a ticket for parking in a no-parking zone but were dropped off during an emergency, describe these circumstances.

Supporting documentation strengthens your objection significantly. Gather any evidence related to your case. This might include photographs of the parking area showing unclear signage, receipts proving meter payment, weather reports if conditions affected visibility, witness statements from individuals present at the time, or your calendar showing you were elsewhere when the violation occurred. Medical documentation may support emergency situations. Keep copies of all materials you submit.

Submit your Notice of Objection to the Department of Public Safety either in person at their office or by mail. If submitting by mail, use certified mail with return receipt to confirm delivery. Include your contact information—phone number and mailing address—so officials can reach you regarding your objection.

After submission, your objection enters the review process. A hearing officer or administrative judge will examine your case, the citation details, and any evidence you provided. This review typically takes 4-8 weeks. You may be notified of the decision by mail or phone. Some cases qualify for an in-person hearing where you can present your case directly. If your objection is sustained, the ticket is dismissed and no payment is required. If your objection is denied, you must pay the fine or explore additional options.
