Free Guide to Opening PowerShell on Windows

What PowerShell Is and Why You Might Use It

PowerShell is a tool built into Windows that lets you run commands and programs on your computer through text-based instructions rather than clicking through menus. Microsoft released the first version of PowerShell in 2006, and it has become standard on all modern Windows operating systems. Think of it as a more powerful alternative to the older Command Prompt tool that Windows users have had for decades.

PowerShell works by accepting typed commands that tell your computer to perform specific tasks. These tasks can range from simple operations like listing files in a folder to complex administrative functions like managing user accounts or configuring network settings. System administrators, IT professionals, and software developers use PowerShell regularly because it allows them to automate repetitive work and manage computer systems more efficiently than manual clicking would allow.

Unlike graphical user interfaces where you point and click to accomplish tasks, PowerShell uses what's called a command-line interface. You type commands using specific syntax, and PowerShell interprets those commands and carries them out. Many modern software tools, programming frameworks, and Windows system utilities are designed to work with PowerShell, making it increasingly relevant for anyone who wants to understand how their computer operates behind the scenes.

PowerShell comes pre-installed on Windows 7 and all later versions, including Windows 10 and Windows 11. This means you don't need to install anything to use it—the program already exists on your computer. Additionally, Microsoft has released PowerShell Core, which is a newer version that works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, though this guide focuses on the standard Windows version.

Practical Takeaway: PowerShell is a built-in Windows tool that processes text commands to perform computer tasks. Understanding that it's already on your system and free to use removes the first barrier to learning about it.

Opening PowerShell Through the Start Menu

The Start Menu is one of the most straightforward ways to open PowerShell on Windows 10 and Windows 11. This method works on any Windows computer and requires no special knowledge of system files or folder locations. To begin, click the Windows Start button, which is typically located in the lower left corner of your screen. On Windows 11, the Start button is centered at the bottom of the screen.

After clicking Start, you'll see a search box at the top of the menu where you can type. Type the word "PowerShell" into this search box. As you type, Windows will search your computer for programs matching what you've entered. Within a second or two, you should see "Windows PowerShell" or "PowerShell" appear in the search results. The icon typically looks like a small blue square with a white ">" symbol on it.

When you see PowerShell in the search results, click on it to open the program. A new window will open with a dark background (typically blue or black depending on your Windows version) and white text. This is the PowerShell window where you can begin typing commands. The window will display some initial information about the PowerShell version and copyright information, but you'll see a prompt line where you can begin entering commands.

If you want to open PowerShell with administrator permissions, right-click on the PowerShell result in the search menu instead of left-clicking. A small menu will appear with an option that says "Run as administrator." Many system-level tasks in PowerShell require administrator permissions, so you may need to do this for certain operations. Windows will ask you to confirm that you want to allow the program to make changes to your device, and then PowerShell will open with elevated permissions.

Practical Takeaway: Searching for PowerShell through the Start Menu is the fastest method for most users. Remember to right-click and select "Run as administrator" if you need to perform system-level tasks.

Opening PowerShell From File Explorer

File Explorer is the Windows program you use to browse folders and files on your computer. A convenient feature in modern Windows versions is the ability to open PowerShell directly from any folder location. This approach is particularly useful when you want to run commands that affect files or programs in a specific directory, because PowerShell will start with that folder as its default location.

To use this method, first open File Explorer by clicking the folder icon on your taskbar or by pressing the Windows key and the letter E together on your keyboard. Navigate to any folder where you'd like to open PowerShell. For example, you might navigate to your Documents folder, Downloads folder, or any project folder on your computer. Once you're in the folder, look at the top of the File Explorer window where you see the address bar showing the folder path.

Click on the address bar to make sure it's active, then hold down the Shift key and right-click in the empty space of the folder (not on a file or subfolder). A context menu will appear with several options. Look for an option that says "Open PowerShell window here" or "Open PowerShell as administrator here." Click whichever option applies to what you need. PowerShell will then open with that folder set as your current working directory, meaning you can immediately start running commands that affect the files in that location.

This method saves time because you don't have to use PowerShell commands to navigate to the folder you want to work in. If you're managing files in your Downloads folder or working with a specific project folder, opening PowerShell directly from that location means you can start your actual work immediately. This is especially valuable for users who frequently need to perform operations on files in specific locations.

Practical Takeaway: Opening PowerShell from File Explorer lets you start working in your desired folder immediately without navigating through commands first. This is helpful for file management and directory-specific tasks.

Opening PowerShell on Windows 11 Specifically

Windows 11, released in 2021, made some changes to how users interact with the system compared to Windows 10. While the basic methods of opening PowerShell remain similar, Windows 11 includes some new features and interface changes worth understanding. The Start Menu in Windows 11 is centered on the screen rather than starting from the left corner, but the search functionality works the same way.

On Windows 11, you can click the Start button in the center of the taskbar and then type "PowerShell" to search for it. You'll see Windows PowerShell appear in the results. However, Windows 11 also introduced Windows Terminal, which is a newer application that can run PowerShell, Command Prompt, and other command-line tools within a tabbed interface. If you type "Terminal" in the search box instead, you'll find Windows Terminal, which will also allow you to run PowerShell commands but in a more modern application window.

Windows 11 still supports the Shift+right-click method in File Explorer to open PowerShell from a folder. However, depending on your Windows 11 build version, this option might say "Open in Terminal" instead of "Open PowerShell window here." Both options will allow you to run PowerShell commands from that location. The functionality is identical even if the menu label has changed.

Another Windows 11 feature is the ability to open PowerShell using a keyboard shortcut. While there is no default global shortcut to open PowerShell, you can create a custom shortcut through the Settings application. Go to Settings, then System, then Keyboard, and look for Advanced keyboard settings. From there, you can create a custom shortcut that opens PowerShell when you press specific keys. This can make accessing PowerShell even faster if you use it frequently.

Practical Takeaway: Windows 11 offers similar PowerShell access methods to Windows 10, but also includes Windows Terminal as an alternative. Learning to use either tool gives you flexibility in how you work with command-line interfaces.

Opening PowerShell on Older Windows Versions

Windows 7, while released in 2009, is still in use on some computers. The methods for opening PowerShell on Windows 7 are slightly different from Windows 10 and Windows 11 because the interface design was different. Windows 7 uses a traditional Start Menu that appears on the left side of the screen when clicked. To open PowerShell on Windows 7, click the Start button and then click "Run" in the menu that appears. A small dialog box will open where you can type a command.
