The NJDOL operates multiple divisions and offices across the state. Each division handles different areas of labor policy. For example, the Division of Wage and Hour Enforcement addresses issues related to minimum wage and overtime pay. The Division of Unemployment Insurance handles claims and payments for workers who have lost their jobs. The Public Employees' Occupational Safety and Health (PEOSH) program focuses on workplace safety for public sector employees.

New Jersey has specific labor laws that differ from federal requirements in some cases. The state minimum wage, for instance, is often higher than the federal minimum wage. As of 2024, New Jersey's minimum wage is higher than the federal rate of $7.25 per hour. Understanding these state-specific rules means knowing which NJDOL division to contact for answers.

The department's main headquarters is located in Trenton, but NJDOL maintains regional offices throughout the state. These regional offices provide services to specific geographic areas. Knowing which office serves your area can speed up communication and make it easier to get information relevant to your location.

Practical Takeaway: The NJDOL handles many different labor-related issues through separate divisions. Identifying which division matches your question or concern helps you reach the right contact person or office more quickly.

Telephone contact works well for general questions or when you need to speak with someone directly. When calling, have information ready about your specific situation. For example, if you are calling about a wage issue, be prepared to discuss the company name, the work performed, and dates of employment. This information helps the person answering direct you to the right department.

Email is another option for some NJDOL divisions. However, email response times vary depending on how busy the department is. Some emails may take several business days to receive a response. The NJDOL website lists email addresses for specific divisions. Using email works well for questions that are not time-sensitive or when you want written documentation of your inquiry.
