Understanding Money Orders and Where to Cash Them

A money order is a paper document that works like a check but is considered safer because it's prepaid. When you purchase a money order, you pay the full amount upfront plus a small fee, usually between $0.50 and $5 depending on the amount and where you buy it. The money order then contains a specific dollar amount that the issuer guarantees will be paid to whoever you give it to. This makes money orders popular for people who don't have bank accounts, want to avoid sending cash through the mail, or need a payment method that doesn't require a checking account.

Money orders can be cashed at numerous locations throughout the United States. The most common places include post offices, which are found in nearly every community. Walmart and other large retail stores with customer service counters typically cash money orders for their customers. Banks and credit unions often cash money orders even if you don't have an account with them, though some may charge a small fee. Check-cashing businesses, grocery stores with money services, and convenience stores frequently offer money order cashing as well. Some pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens also provide this service.

The specific locations available to you depend on where you live. Rural areas may have fewer options than urban centers, so you might need to travel to the nearest town with a bank or post office. According to the U.S. Postal Service, there are approximately 31,000 post offices nationwide, making them one of the most accessible options for money order services. The amount of time it takes to cash a money order is typically just a few minutes, though this can vary during busy periods.

Practical takeaway: Before you need to cash a money order, identify which locations near your home or workplace offer this service. Having this information in advance means you'll know exactly where to go when you need to convert a money order to cash.

Step-by-Step Process for Cashing a Money Order

Cashing a money order follows a straightforward process that requires minimal paperwork compared to other financial transactions. When you arrive at a location that cashes money orders, you'll need to present the money order itself along with a valid form of identification. Acceptable forms of ID typically include a driver's license, passport, state identification card, or military ID. Some locations may accept other forms of ID, so it's worth asking if you don't have one of the standard options. The money order must be signed on the back by the person whose name appears as the payee, which is the person who is supposed to receive the money.

Once you've provided your ID and signed money order, the cashier will verify that the money order is legitimate and that the amount shown is what you expect. They'll input information into their system to confirm the money order hasn't already been cashed. This verification process usually takes less than five minutes. You'll then provide information about how you'd like to receive the money. Most locations offer cash directly, which is the most common choice. Some locations may offer options to deposit the money into a bank account or receive it on a prepaid card, though this varies by location.

After verification and payment method selection, you'll receive your cash or alternative payment. At post offices, the process is nearly identical—you approach the counter, present your signed money order and ID, and wait while they verify and process it. At retail locations like Walmart, you visit the customer service desk rather than a regular checkout counter. At banks and credit unions, you may need to wait in line with other customers, or some locations have separate windows for non-account holders. Check-cashing businesses operate similarly but may charge a small fee even if you're cashing a money order rather than a check.

Practical takeaway: Before going to cash your money order, ensure you have both the original money order and a valid photo ID. Make sure you've signed the back of the money order with your name exactly as it appears in the payee line. This preparation prevents delays and ensures the process moves quickly.

Identification Requirements and What to Bring

Identification is a non-negotiable requirement for cashing a money order at virtually every location. This requirement exists to prevent fraud and protect both the business cashing the money order and the person receiving the money. A valid photo ID serves as proof that you are who you claim to be and that you're the legitimate payee on the money order. The most widely accepted forms of ID are government-issued documents that include your photograph, such as a driver's license or state identification card. These are accepted at post offices, banks, retail stores, and check-cashing businesses without question.

A U.S. passport or passport card is another form of ID that's universally recognized and accepted for money order cashing. Military identification cards, including those issued to active-duty service members and retirees, are also standard forms of acceptable ID. Some locations may also accept tribal identification cards or other government-issued photo IDs. The key requirement is that the ID must include a photograph and must be current or only slightly expired—most businesses won't accept IDs that expired more than a few years ago, though policies vary.

If you don't have a traditional photo ID, options still exist, though they may be more limited. Some locations, particularly smaller check-cashing businesses and some credit unions, may accept non-photo IDs such as a birth certificate combined with another form of identification. A Social Security card alone is not considered sufficient ID at most locations. If you're in a situation where obtaining a standard photo ID has been difficult, contacting the specific location where you plan to cash your money order can help you learn what alternative documentation they might accept. Many communities also offer assistance with obtaining government-issued photo IDs.

Practical takeaway: Check your ID well before you need to cash a money order. If your ID is expired or damaged, or if you don't currently have one, look into obtaining a state ID card or other acceptable form of identification ahead of time. This prevents the frustration of arriving to cash a money order only to find your ID isn't acceptable.

Fees, Costs, and What to Expect to Pay

The cost of cashing a money order varies depending on where you go and the amount of the money order itself. Post offices typically charge between $1.10 and $1.75 per money order, regardless of the amount, making them one of the most affordable options for this service. However, the post office also charges fees to purchase money orders initially, ranging from $1.45 for amounts up to $500 to $1.95 for amounts between $500 and $1,000. This means if you purchase a money order at the post office and then cash it there, you'll pay both fees.

Banks and credit unions that are FDIC-insured often cash money orders for free or for a very small fee, sometimes between $0.50 and $1.00. Many banks don't charge anything at all if you're a customer with an account. Check-cashing businesses typically charge a percentage of the money order amount or a flat fee, whichever is higher. This might range from 1% to 5% depending on the business and the amount being cashed. On a $500 money order with a 2% fee, you'd pay $10. Walmart charges approximately $3 per money order cashing transaction, making it a mid-range option for cost.

Some retail locations and grocery stores with money services offer free money order cashing as a way to attract customers, so it's worth asking about fees before you commit to a particular location. The total amount you receive when you cash a money order is the full face amount minus any fees charged by the location. It's important to factor these fees into your expectations. If you're cashing multiple money orders, comparing fees across available locations could result in savings. For example, cashing five $100 money orders at a check-cashing business charging 2% would cost $10 total, while cashing them at Walmart would cost $15.

Practical takeaway: Before deciding where to cash your money order, ask about fees at your top two or three options. Write down the exact fee or percentage, then calculate what you'll actually receive. This information helps you make the most economical choice and prevents surprises when you receive your cash.

Verifying Legitimacy and Protecting Yourself from Fraud

Money order fraud is a real concern that affects both individual consumers and businesses. Understanding how to verify that a money order is legitimate protects you from becoming a victim.
