Free Guide to Michigan EBT Customer Service

Overview of Michigan's EBT System and Customer Service Options

Michigan's Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system is the electronic method the state uses to distribute food assistance and cash benefits to eligible individuals and families. The system works like a debit card—beneficiaries receive a card that can be used at authorized retailers to purchase food or withdraw cash, depending on the program. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) administers these programs, which include the Food Assistance Program (FAP, formerly known as food stamps) and the Family Independence Program (FIP).

The state operates multiple customer service channels so people can get information about their accounts, report problems, or learn how the system works. These channels include a dedicated phone line, a website portal, in-person offices, and automated phone systems. Understanding which channel to use for different questions can save time and frustration.

Michigan's EBT system processed over 1.2 billion dollars in food assistance benefits in 2022, serving approximately 1.5 million residents. This large-scale operation means the customer service centers handle thousands of inquiries daily. Knowing how to navigate these services helps people get the information they need without unnecessary delays.

The system is designed so that cardholders can check their balances, report lost or stolen cards, and ask questions about their benefits at any time. Customer service representatives can provide information about how benefits work, explain transaction history, and direct people to resources for additional support. However, they cannot make decisions about program eligibility or approve or deny benefits—those determinations are made by MDHHS caseworkers based on application information and state rules.

Practical Takeaway: Before contacting customer service, determine what type of information you need. If your question is about your account balance or a transaction, use the automated system or phone line. If you need information about programs or how they work, customer service representatives can provide that. If you have questions about eligibility or need to provide documents for your case, you'll need to contact your local MDHHS office or caseworker.

How to Reach Michigan EBT Customer Service by Phone

The primary phone number for Michigan EBT customer service is 1-888-678-8914. This line is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time. The phone system is designed to handle multiple types of inquiries, from balance checks to reporting problems with cards or accounts.

When you call, you'll hear an automated menu with options. You can select options to check your balance, report a lost or damaged card, hear about recent transactions, or speak with a representative. The automated system can handle many routine requests without requiring you to wait for a human representative. For example, you can use the automated system to check your current balance and recent purchases 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by pressing the appropriate menu option.

If you need to speak with a representative, wait times vary depending on call volume. During peak times (typically mid-morning and early afternoon), wait times may be 15 to 30 minutes. Calling early in the morning or late in the afternoon often results in shorter waits. Representatives can answer questions about how programs work, explain transaction details, help you understand your benefits, and direct you to additional resources.

The phone line serves both FAP and FIP customers. When you call, have your EBT card or case number available if possible. This information helps the representative locate your account quickly. You should also have a list of specific questions ready, as this helps you use the call time effectively.

For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Michigan offers TTY (text telephone) services. You can reach TTY services at 1-888-409-0834. Relay services are also available through Michigan's relay service at 1-800-649-3777, which allows people to use an intermediary to communicate with customer service representatives.

Practical Takeaway: Use the automated phone system for quick tasks like checking your balance or reporting a lost card. If you have complex questions or need detailed explanations, call during off-peak hours to reduce wait time. Have your case number or card ready before calling, and write down your questions beforehand so the representative can address all your concerns in one call.

Using Michigan's Online EBT Portal and Mobile Access

Michigan provides an online portal where cardholders can view account information without calling customer service. To access the online system, visit the official Michigan MDHHS website. You'll need to create an account or log in with existing credentials. The portal allows you to check your current benefit balance, view transaction history dating back several months, and see when benefits were deposited to your card.

The online portal displays FAP balance separately from FIP balance if you receive both programs. You can see exactly what you've purchased, where you shopped, and the date of each transaction. This information can be useful for budgeting, tracking spending, or verifying that transactions are accurate. The portal typically updates within 24 hours of a purchase.

Many people find the online portal convenient because you can check information anytime—day or night, weekends or holidays—without waiting on hold. The system is mobile-friendly, so you can check your balance using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Some people bookmark the portal on their phone for quick access when shopping or meal planning.

Michigan also offers information through text message alerts. You can sign up to receive notifications when benefits are deposited to your account. This feature helps people know exactly when their monthly benefits arrive so they can plan their shopping accordingly. Text alerts are free and can be managed through your online account.

If you forget your online login credentials, the website has a password reset option. You'll need to answer security questions to verify your identity before resetting your password. If you can't remember the answers to your security questions, you can call customer service for help regaining access to your account.

Practical Takeaway: Set up an online account so you can check your balance anytime without calling. Sign up for text alerts about benefit deposits so you always know when your monthly funds arrive. Keep your login information secure and update your security questions and password regularly, especially if someone else has access to your phone or computer.

Reporting Problems: Lost Cards, Fraud, and Transaction Errors

If your EBT card is lost, stolen, or damaged, report it immediately by calling 1-888-678-8914. The automated system allows you to report a lost or damaged card without waiting for a representative. When you report your card, the system will deactivate it immediately to prevent unauthorized use. You should receive a replacement card by mail within 7 to 10 business days, usually sent to the address on file with your case.

If you suspect fraud—meaning someone used your card or account without your permission—report this to customer service right away. Explain what transactions look incorrect or when you discovered the fraud. The representative will document your report. Michigan law protects beneficiaries from fraudulent transactions, but it's important to report suspected fraud promptly. Generally, you're not responsible for unauthorized transactions if you report them quickly, though there may be limits depending on the specific situation.

If you notice a transaction on your account that you don't recognize or believe is incorrect, you can report it through customer service. Explain exactly what transaction concerns you, including the date, amount, and merchant name if possible. The representative will document your concern and may be able to provide more details about the transaction, such as the specific store location where it occurred. If investigation determines the transaction was truly unauthorized, the funds may be restored to your account.

Duplicate charges sometimes occur—for example, when a register processes a purchase twice by accident. If you believe a transaction was duplicated, report this and provide the date and amount. Customer service can review the transactions and explain what happened. If it was indeed a duplicate charge error, the merchant or the system may automatically reverse it, or you may need to contact the merchant directly to request a refund.

For card damage issues like a cracked card, worn magnetic stripe, or chip damage that prevents the card from working, you can request a replacement. Damaged cards can usually be replaced within 7 to 10 business days. In some cases, if the card becomes unusable and you need benefits immediately, you may be able to pick up an emergency replacement at a local MDHHS office.

Practical Takeaway: Report lost or damaged cards immediately rather than waiting. Keep your card in a safe place and check your account regularly for unf
