Free Guide to Measuring Your Pillow for Covers

Understanding Standard Pillow Dimensions and Sizes

Pillow covers come in many different sizes, and knowing which size you have is the first step toward finding the right cover. Most pillows fall into a few common categories, each with specific measurements. Standard pillows, the most common type found in American households, typically measure 20 inches wide by 26 inches long. Queen-size pillows are slightly larger at 20 inches by 30 inches, while king-size pillows reach 20 inches by 36 inches. Body pillows, designed for full-length support, are usually 20 inches by 54 inches or 20 inches by 48 inches.

Beyond these mainstream options, specialty sizes exist for specific purposes. Toddler pillows are much smaller, usually around 13 inches by 18 inches, making them safer for young children. Euro pillows, which are square-shaped, come in 26-inch by 26-inch dimensions and are often used as decorative pieces on beds alongside regular pillows. Travel pillows vary widely but often measure around 12 inches by 16 inches. Wedge pillows and cervical pillows have irregular shapes that don't fit standard cover categories, though some manufacturers produce covers designed specifically for these shapes.

The thickness of your pillow also matters when selecting a cover. Pillow thickness is called "loft" and ranges from low (2-3 inches) to high (5-6 inches or more). A cover that fits a low-loft pillow might feel loose on a high-loft one. Manufacturers typically make covers with enough room to accommodate standard loft levels for each size category, but knowing your pillow's actual thickness can help you choose a cover with the right fit.

Practical takeaway: Write down your pillow's width and length measurements in inches. Compare these numbers to the standard size chart to identify which category your pillow falls into. This information becomes your reference point for all future cover shopping.

How to Measure Your Pillow Accurately

Taking accurate measurements requires only a few simple tools: a measuring tape or ruler, and ideally a flat surface like a table or the floor. Place your pillow in its normal, resting state—not compressed or fluffed up artificially. Using a soft measuring tape works best because it won't damage your pillow, but a rigid ruler can work if you're careful.

Start with the width measurement. Lay your pillow flat with the opening facing to the side. Measure from the leftmost edge to the rightmost edge across the widest part of the pillow. This gives you the width. Next, measure the length by going from the top edge to the bottom edge, or from the opening to the opposite end. Write these numbers down, as you may forget them later. For the most accurate length measurement, measure from the very center of one end to the very center of the other end, running your tape down the middle of the pillow rather than along an edge where seams might add extra bulk.

The depth or thickness measurement is equally important. Stand your pillow upright and measure from the bottom surface to the top, capturing the full height of your pillow when it's in a natural, uncompressed state. Some pillows vary in thickness from top to bottom—if this is the case with yours, measure both the thickest and thinnest points. This information tells you whether a standard cover will fit properly or if you need a cover designed for lofty pillows.

For irregularly shaped pillows like body pillows or wedges, you may need additional measurements. Measure the pillow at several points along its length, especially if it tapers or curves. For wedge pillows, measure the height at both the tall end and the short end, plus the base measurements. Take photos of your pillow from multiple angles as a reference when you're shopping for covers later.

Practical takeaway: Create a simple chart with your measurements: width, length, and depth. Store this information in your phone or on a piece of paper you keep in your home. When you're ready to purchase covers, you'll have accurate information without needing to remeasure.

Accounting for Pillow Fill Material and Density

The material inside your pillow affects how it responds when covered. Down pillows, filled with soft feathers from ducks or geese, tend to compress easily and may look slimmer once a cover is placed over them. Memory foam pillows maintain a consistent shape and thickness, so they require covers that fit snugly. Synthetic fiber-fill pillows, the most common and affordable type, fall somewhere in between—they compress moderately and usually work well with standard-sized covers.

Pillow density, meaning how tightly the fill material is packed, influences how much space the pillow takes up inside a cover. A densely packed memory foam pillow will need a snug-fitting cover, while a loosely filled down pillow might need a cover with extra room to prevent bunching. If your pillow feels very firm and solid, it likely has high-density fill and will need a fitted cover with minimal extra space. If it feels soft and easily compresses when you press on it, it has lower density and can work with covers that have slightly more room.

Some people use pillow inserts—inner protective covers that go between the pillow and the outer decorative cover. These inserts add thickness and may affect how your cover fits. If you plan to use an insert, you may want a cover one size larger than your pillow alone would require. However, many people skip this step and put covers directly on their pillows.

The cover material itself also plays a role in fit. Stretchy materials like jersey knit will conform to your pillow and work with pillows that vary slightly in size. Rigid materials like linen or crisp cotton will show gaps if the cover is too large and may be difficult to close if too small. When you know your pillow's fill type and density, you can choose cover materials that work well with your specific pillow.

Practical takeaway: Note what type of fill your pillow contains—check the pillow tag or packaging if you still have it. This information helps you understand whether you need a snug cover or one with a bit of extra room, and guides you toward cover materials that will fit well.

Measuring for Envelope and Zipper Closures

Pillow covers close in different ways, and the closure type affects how measurements translate to fit. Envelope closures, the most common type, have overlapping fabric flaps on the back that you tuck one inside the other. These covers typically need to be about 2-4 inches smaller than your actual pillow dimensions to work properly. The overlap creates tension that holds the cover closed and keeps your pillow from shifting around inside.

Zipper closures run along one edge of the cover and open completely, making them easy to remove for washing. Covers with zippers usually need to match your pillow size more precisely since there's no overlapping fabric to create tension. A zipper cover that's slightly too large will bunch; one that's too small won't zip closed or will strain the zipper mechanism.

When measuring for envelope-closure covers, subtract 2-4 inches from your pillow's width and length measurements. If your pillow is 20 inches by 26 inches, look for covers that are around 18-20 inches by 24-26 inches. This sizing varies by manufacturer, so always check the product description. Some manufacturers build in extra room intentionally, while others make their covers more fitted.

For zipper covers, use your exact pillow measurements. A pillow that's 20 by 26 inches should have a zipper cover labeled as 20 by 26 inches. However, slight variations exist—some zipper covers are made about half an inch to one inch smaller to ensure a snug fit, while others are made a bit larger to make zipping easier. Read customer reviews or product descriptions that mention fit, as these often note whether covers run large, small, or true to size.

Button closures work similarly to envelope closures but use buttons instead of overlapping fabric. These typically require covers that are 1-2 inches smaller than your pillow to ensure the buttons stay fastened and the cover doesn't gap. Measure the distance between buttons on the back to understand how much overlap exists and how much smaller the cover should be.

Practical takeaway: Note both your pillow's actual measurements and what type of closure you prefer. Write
