Understanding Paver Installation Basics Over Concrete

Installing pavers over existing concrete is a practical approach to updating outdoor spaces without removing the old surface. This method works because concrete provides a stable, level foundation that pavers can sit on top of. Before starting any project, you should understand that concrete acts as a moisture barrier and a firm base. The concrete must be in reasonably good condition—not severely cracked or sunken—for pavers to perform well on top.

Concrete expands and contracts with temperature changes, and pavers placed directly on it will move slightly as well. This is normal and expected. The key difference between installing pavers over concrete versus directly into soil is that you're creating a "floating" system rather than embedding pavers into the ground. This means the pavers sit on top of a preparation layer that sits on top of the concrete.

According to the Portland Cement Association, concrete can last 25 to 40 years or longer with proper maintenance. If your concrete is within this lifespan and structurally sound, building on top of it can extend the life of your outdoor area. The main advantage is cost savings—you avoid the expense and labor of breaking up and removing the old concrete.

Understanding this foundation method helps you make decisions about which areas of your property work well for paver installation. Patios, walkways, and driveways are common locations where this technique succeeds. Sloped areas or regions with poor drainage may require additional planning.

Practical Takeaway: Examine your concrete surface for large cracks wider than one-quarter inch, sunken sections, or areas that trap water. Address these issues before adding pavers, as they will affect how your new surface performs.

Preparing Your Concrete Surface for Paver Installation

Proper surface preparation is the foundation of a successful paver installation. The concrete must be clean, dry, and relatively level before you begin. Start by clearing the area of all debris, dirt, and vegetation. Sweep the entire surface thoroughly, then pressure wash it with a garden hose or pressure washer set to low pressure to avoid damaging the concrete. Allow the surface to dry completely—ideally for 24 to 48 hours—before proceeding.

Inspect the concrete for cracks. Small cracks (less than one-quarter inch wide) can generally be sealed with concrete crack filler to prevent water intrusion. Larger cracks should be addressed with concrete patching compound. For areas where the concrete is spalling—the surface is flaking or peeling—use a wire brush to remove loose material, then apply a concrete bonding agent if needed. Low spots where water collects should be filled with a self-leveling concrete sealant or patching compound.

Check the slope or grade of your concrete. Concrete should slope slightly (about one-eighth inch per foot) to allow water to run off and not pool. Use a long level to check this. If you're adding pavers to a flat surface, ensure the completed paver surface will still have adequate slope for drainage. This is especially important for patios and walkways where standing water can cause problems.

If your concrete is very slippery or has a glossy finish, roughen the surface slightly with a wire brush or sandpaper. This helps any adhesive or leveling sand bond better to the concrete. You should also inspect the edges of the concrete slab to ensure they're not broken or jagged. Use a concrete edger to smooth sharp edges.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist: clean surface, check for cracks and repair them, verify slope for water drainage, rough up glossy surfaces, and smooth any sharp edges. Complete all these steps before moving to the next phase of installation.

Selecting the Right Pavers and Materials for Your Project

Pavers come in many materials, styles, and sizes. The most common types for residential installations include clay brick pavers, concrete pavers, permeable pavers, and natural stone. Each material has different properties that affect durability, appearance, and maintenance requirements. Clay pavers are traditional and long-lasting, often lasting 25 years or more with minimal maintenance. Concrete pavers are versatile and available in numerous colors and patterns. Natural stone pavers like bluestone or travertine offer upscale aesthetics but require more maintenance.

When installing over concrete, consider the thickness of your pavers. Most residential pavers range from 1.5 inches to 2.25 inches thick. Thicker pavers (2 inches or more) tend to be more durable for high-traffic areas. The size of individual pavers affects both the look and the installation process. Common sizes include 4x8 inches, 6x9 inches, 8x8 inches, and 12x12 inches. Larger pavers cover area faster but may require more precise leveling. Smaller pavers offer more pattern options.

For the base layer between concrete and pavers, you'll need polymeric sand and leveling sand. Regular sand compacts over time and allows weeds to grow between pavers. Polymeric sand contains additives that harden when wet, locking pavers together. Most installation guides recommend using polymeric sand for joints. Leveling sand (also called paver base sand or bedding sand) is coarser than regular play sand and provides the layer on which pavers sit. This sand should be 1 to 2 inches thick.

Consider your climate when selecting materials. In freeze-thaw climates where temperatures regularly drop below freezing, permeable pavers or pavers with good drainage properties help prevent damage from ice formation. In hot, dry climates, lighter-colored pavers reduce heat absorption and are more comfortable to walk on barefoot.

Practical Takeaway: Purchase samples of pavers you're considering and place them on your concrete surface to see how they look in your yard's lighting and next to your home's exterior. Buy 5 to 10 percent more pavers than your square footage calculation requires to account for cuts and breakage.

Installation Methods and Step-by-Step Process

The installation process for pavers over concrete involves creating a stable base layer, setting individual pavers, and finishing the joints. Begin by applying a layer of landscape fabric or a geo-textile membrane directly over the clean, dry concrete. This helps prevent sand from being pushed into concrete pores and aids with water drainage. Some installers use a thin layer of mortar to bond the fabric to the concrete, while others simply lay it down.

Next, spread leveling sand over the landscape fabric to a depth of 1 to 2 inches. This should be compacted lightly—not heavily, as you want to maintain a smooth, level surface. Use a screed board (a straight 2x4 board or metal straightedge) drawn across the surface to create a uniform depth. This step is crucial because uneven sand causes pavers to rock or sit unevenly. The leveling sand allows for minor adjustments to get pavers perfectly level.

Begin laying pavers from a corner or edge, pressing each paver firmly into the sand with a slight twisting motion. Use a rubber mallet if needed to ensure good contact, but avoid striking pavers so hard that they crack. Maintain consistent spacing between pavers—typically one-quarter inch to one-half inch for joints. Use spacers or a measuring tape to ensure uniformity. Check your work frequently with a level, both across individual pavers and along longer sections.

When you reach areas that require cuts, measure the space carefully and use a wet saw with a masonry blade to cut pavers. Cut pavers should be at least one-third of the original paver size to maintain structural integrity. Once all pavers are laid and leveled, you're ready to fill joints. Sweep polymeric sand into the joints, working back and forth diagonally across the pavers to fill all gaps. Sweep off excess sand from the paver surface, then lightly mist the area with water according to the product instructions. This activates the polymeric sand's binding properties.

Practical Takeaway: Work in small sections (8x10 feet or similar) rather than trying to complete the entire project in one day. This allows you to maintain accuracy and quality. Allow 24 to 48 hours for polymeric sand to fully cure before heavy use.

Drainage Considerations and Water Management

Proper drainage is critical for long-term success of paver installations over concrete. Water must be able to move away from the structure and
