The Indigo card operates as a secured credit card, which means it requires a cash deposit that serves as collateral. Unlike prepaid cards where you spend only what you deposit, a secured credit card lets you borrow against your deposit while building a credit history. The card reports your payment activity to the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—which means responsible use can help establish or improve your credit profile over time.

This guide walks through the card's main characteristics, fees, rewards structure, credit-building mechanics, and practical usage strategies. Each section presents factual information about how the card works, based on the card issuer's published terms and conditions. The information here is educational in nature and intended to help you understand what this financial product offers.

One important note: this guide does not determine whether the card is right for you or predict what your personal outcomes will be. Financial decisions depend on your individual circumstances, spending habits, and credit goals. Reading this guide is a first step toward understanding one option in the broader credit landscape.

Practical Takeaway: Before using any credit card, take time to understand its core mechanics. A secured card works differently than a traditional unsecured card, and knowing these differences helps you use it strategically for credit building.

Required Deposit and Credit Limits Explained

The Indigo Credit Card requires an upfront cash deposit, which is a defining feature of secured credit cards. This deposit becomes your credit limit. For example, if you deposit $500, your credit limit will be $500. The deposit stays in a separate account and earns a small amount of interest, but you cannot access it directly while the card is open. This structure protects the card issuer from loss if you don't pay your bills.

Deposits for the Indigo card typically range from $250 to $2,500, though these amounts may vary based on current terms. This range allows people with different financial situations to participate. Someone with limited savings might start with a $250 deposit, while someone with more resources might deposit the maximum amount to access a higher credit limit and potentially make larger purchases without maxing out the card.

The credit limit—which equals your deposit amount—resets monthly as you pay your balance. This is different from a traditional credit card where you might have a $2,000 limit that remains $2,000 even after you pay down your balance. With a secured card, if you spend $300 of your $500 limit and then make a $300 payment, your available credit goes back up to $500. This monthly reset cycle is important for understanding how much you can charge each month.

After using the card responsibly for a period of time—typically 6 to 18 months, depending on the issuer—you may become eligible to convert to an unsecured card. When this happens, your deposit is typically returned to you, and your credit limit may increase beyond your original deposit amount. However, conversion is not automatic and depends on your payment history and credit behavior during the secured period.

One practical consideration: the deposit amount should reflect what you actually plan to spend each month. If you deposit only $250 but need to make frequent purchases, you might max out your card quickly. Conversely, depositing $2,500 when you only spend $200 monthly means tying up money that could be used elsewhere. Think about your typical monthly spending to choose a deposit that matches your usage patterns.

Practical Takeaway: Your deposit is not a fee—it's your credit limit in a separate account. Choose a deposit amount that reflects your planned monthly spending, and remember that this money will be held while your account is open.

Annual Fees, Interest Rates, and Other Costs

Like most credit cards, the Indigo card carries an annual membership fee. As of the most recent published information, this fee is typically around $95 per year, though terms may change. This annual fee is charged to your account once per year, usually on your account anniversary. Unlike some premium cards that offer benefits or rewards that offset their annual fees, the Indigo card's annual fee is a straightforward cost of holding the card.

In addition to the annual fee, the Indigo card charges interest on balances you don't pay in full each month. The interest rate (called the Annual Percentage Rate or APR) for purchases typically ranges from around 19% to 24%, though your specific rate depends on your creditworthiness and current market conditions. This is higher than many traditional credit cards, which reflects the risk the issuer takes by working with people who have limited or damaged credit histories. If you carry a $1,000 balance for one month on a card with a 20% APR, you would owe approximately $16.67 in interest charges.

There are other potential charges to understand. Late payment fees may apply if you miss a payment deadline, typically ranging from $25 to $35 for the first late payment. Returned payment fees (if a check or automatic payment bounces) and over-limit fees may also be charged. These fees can add up quickly, making it important to set up autopay or calendar reminders for your payment due date.

Balance transfer fees and cash advance fees are also part of the fee structure. If you transfer a balance from another card, you typically pay 3% to 5% of the transferred amount. Cash advances—withdrawing money using your credit line—often carry both a higher APR and an upfront fee of 3% to 5% of the amount withdrawn. These options are considerably more expensive than regular purchases, so they should be used only when necessary.

The card does not charge an inactivity fee if you stop using it, and there is typically no penalty for paying off your balance early. Some cardholders use this card strategically by making small monthly charges (like a subscription service at $5 to $10) and paying the full balance immediately. This approach builds credit history while minimizing interest charges, though you still pay the annual fee regardless of how much you use the card.

Practical Takeaway: Factor the $95 annual fee into your decision-making. To make this card cost-effective, you should genuinely need a credit-building tool and plan to use it regularly enough that the credit-building benefit outweighs the annual cost.

How the Indigo Card Reports to Credit Bureaus and Builds Credit

The primary purpose of the Indigo Credit Card is to build credit history. The card reports your account activity to all three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—which means your usage patterns appear on your credit reports. This reporting mechanism is what makes a secured credit card different from a prepaid card, which typically does not report to the bureaus.

Credit bureaus track several pieces of information about your card account. They record whether you make payments on time, how much of your credit limit you use each month, and your overall payment history. These factors combine to influence your credit score. Payment history is the most heavily weighted factor in most credit scoring models, accounting for approximately 35% of your score. This means that making on-time payments with your Indigo card can meaningfully impact your credit profile over time.

Credit utilization—the percentage of your available credit that you actually use—is the second-largest factor in credit scoring, typically accounting for 30% of your score. With a secured card, if you have a $500 limit and charge $250, your utilization is 50%. Credit scoring models generally favor lower utilization rates. Financial experts often suggest keeping utilization below 30% for optimal score impact. So with a $500 limit, charging no more than $150 each month demonstrates responsible credit use to the bureaus.

A typical credit-building timeline with a secured card looks like this: after three to six months of on-time payments, you may see your credit score begin to improve. The improvement continues as your payment history lengthens. By 12 to 18 months, people with very poor starting credit scores often see improvements of 50 to 100 points or more, though results vary widely based on individual circumstances. Someone starting with a 500 credit score might reach
