Hertz operates at over 10,000 locations worldwide, with more than 9,000 locations in the United States alone. With this many locations, the company has developed multiple return processes to accommodate different customer needs and travel situations. Whether you are returning a car in the same city where you picked it up or dropping it off in a different location entirely, Hertz has structured options designed to handle these scenarios.

The return process typically begins before you even leave the rental location on your trip. At pickup, the rental agreement outlines the expected return location, time, and any specific procedures for that location. Understanding these details at the beginning helps prevent confusion and potential extra charges when you return the vehicle. Different return options may have different implications for your final bill, especially regarding mileage, fuel charges, and time-related fees.

Hertz return locations operate during specific business hours, though these hours vary by location. Some airport locations may have extended hours or 24-hour drop-off options, while smaller city locations typically operate during standard business hours. The rental agreement you sign specifies your agreed-upon return time and location, and this information becomes important for calculating any applicable late fees or additional charges.

Practical Takeaway: Review your rental agreement carefully at pickup to confirm your return location and time. Note these details in your phone or written itinerary so you have this information available during your trip.

Same-Location Returns at Hertz

Returning your Hertz rental car to the same location where you picked it up is the most straightforward return option. This is sometimes called a "home base" return or standard return. With same-location returns, you drive back to the original rental location during business hours on or before your agreed-upon return date and time. The rental agreement typically includes specific instructions for same-location returns at your particular pickup location.

When you arrive at the location for your same-location return, staff members will guide you through the checkout process. This process typically involves the following steps: driving the vehicle to the return area designated by the location, turning over the keys to Hertz staff, providing your driver's license and rental agreement, and reviewing any charges added to your account. The staff member will usually inspect the vehicle for any damage, check the fuel level, and verify the mileage.

Most Hertz locations have designated return lanes or parking areas separate from the main rental office. This allows the return process to move efficiently and keeps rental operations organized. Signs and staff members will direct you to the correct area when you arrive. Airport locations may have particularly well-organized return areas with clear signage, as they handle high volumes of returns throughout the day.

The fuel policy for same-location returns works the same as for other return types. Hertz typically offers a prepaid fuel option at pickup, where you pay a set price per gallon upfront. If you choose this option, you can return the car with any fuel level and avoid additional fuel charges. Alternatively, if you do not prepay for fuel, you must return the car with a full tank or you will be charged for any missing fuel at rates that are typically higher than local gas station prices.

Damage assessment also happens during same-location returns. Before you leave the location, staff will document any new damage to the vehicle. If you rented the car with the damage waiver protection (often called Loss Damage Waiver or LDW), this coverage may apply to new damage. However, if you declined this coverage, you may be responsible for repair costs. Understanding your damage coverage before you leave the location helps prevent billing surprises later.

Practical Takeaway: For same-location returns, arrive during business hours with a full tank of gas (unless you prepaid for fuel) to avoid additional charges. Plan to spend 10-15 minutes in the return area for the checkout process.

One-Way Returns to Different Locations

Hertz allows customers to return rental cars at locations different from where they picked them up. This option is particularly useful for one-way trips where you do not plan to return to your starting city. One-way returns, also called drop-off returns or inter-location returns, enable you to keep the rental car for your entire journey and drop it off at your final destination instead of driving back to the original location.

One-way returns typically involve an additional charge called a drop-off fee or relocation fee. This fee compensates Hertz for transporting the vehicle from the drop-off location back to where it is needed. The amount of this fee varies based on several factors, including the distance between the pickup and drop-off locations, the specific locations involved, and current market demand. For example, returning a car from a smaller city to a major metropolitan area might have a different fee structure than the reverse route.

The drop-off fee is determined at the time you make your reservation. This means you can see the total cost for the one-way rental before you commit to the booking. Different rental companies handle one-way fees differently, and Hertz pricing reflects their specific business model and location network. Some routes may have higher fees during peak travel seasons, while off-season travel might offer lower drop-off charges.

To use a one-way return option, you specify both your pickup location and drop-off location when you make your reservation. This information becomes part of your rental agreement. It is important to confirm the drop-off location details at pickup to ensure the branch you plan to use is actually where you will end your rental. This prevents arriving at a location that may not handle Hertz returns or may have limited evening hours when you plan to drop off the car.

One-way returns follow the same vehicle inspection and checkout procedures as same-location returns. Staff at the drop-off location will inspect the car for damage, check the fuel level, verify mileage, and process your final paperwork. The main difference is that you are completing these tasks at a different physical location than where you started your rental.

Planning one-way returns requires attention to the drop-off location's business hours. If you will be arriving at the drop-off location during evening or early morning hours, verify in advance that this location accepts returns during those times. Some smaller Hertz locations close in the evenings or on weekends, which could create problems if that is when you plan to return your car.

Practical Takeaway: When planning a one-way rental, factor the drop-off fee into your total rental cost and verify the drop-off location's hours match your expected arrival time. Confirm this information on your rental agreement at pickup.

After-Hours and Express Returns

Many Hertz locations offer after-hours return options for customers who cannot return their rental cars during regular business hours. These options may include key drop boxes, where you return the car keys and documentation through a secure receptacle after the location has closed. This allows you to complete your return without waiting for staff to be present, though the vehicle inspection and final billing adjustments happen the next business day when staff review the returned car.

After-hours returns typically require that you park the rental car in a designated after-hours return area. You will leave the car, keys, and rental agreement in a specific spot as instructed by Hertz staff at pickup. This method allows Hertz to document the return date and time even though no staff member is present when you drop off the vehicle. The location's security systems usually record the time of return, which is important for determining whether any late fees apply.

Some Hertz locations, particularly at major airports, offer 24-hour return service. This means you can return your rental car at any time of day or night without worrying about location hours. Airport locations often have dedicated after-hours return areas with clear instructions and secure parking. These facilities may have automated systems or staff present around the clock to process returns.

Express return options are designed to move customers through the return process more quickly. These services may involve completing some paperwork through a digital kiosk or on your phone before you arrive at the location, then simply parking the car and submitting your keys when you arrive. This can reduce the time you spend at the location from 15 minutes to just a few minutes.
