Understanding Turnip Basics and Why They're Worth Growing

Turnips are a root vegetable that has been grown in home gardens for centuries. They belong to the Brassica family, which also includes cabbage, broccoli, and kale. The edible part of the turnip grows both above and below ground—the round bulb develops underground, while the leafy greens grow above the soil and are also edible. Many gardeners overlook turnips, but they offer real practical value for home cultivation.

Turnips come in several varieties, each with slightly different characteristics. The most common type is the white turnip with purple shoulders, such as the 'Purple Top White Globe' variety. Other options include 'Tokyo Cross', which is smaller and sweeter, and 'Rutabaga', which is a larger, hardier cousin of the turnip. Some varieties are bred specifically for their greens rather than their roots, making them useful if you want to harvest both parts of the plant.

From a nutritional standpoint, turnips contain vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. One cup of cooked turnips contains about 36 calories, making them a low-calorie addition to meals. The greens are even more nutrient-dense, containing calcium, iron, and vitamins A and K. Growing your own means you control how they're grown and can harvest them at peak freshness.

Turnips also mature relatively quickly compared to other root vegetables. Most varieties reach harvest size between 50 and 80 days from planting. This means you can plant turnips multiple times in a single growing season in many climates. The quick maturation time makes them ideal for beginning gardeners who want to see results without a long wait.

Practical takeaway: Research which turnip varieties grow well in your region by checking your local cooperative extension or gardening resources. Knowing whether you want to harvest primarily roots, greens, or both will help you choose the right variety for your garden space and goals.

Preparing Your Soil and Garden Space

Turnips are not particularly fussy about soil, but they do grow better in conditions that drain well and have moderate fertility. The ideal soil pH for turnips ranges from 6.0 to 7.5. If you're unsure about your soil's pH, many county extension offices offer soil testing services for a small fee. A soil test also measures nutrient levels and can guide you on what amendments to add before planting.

Before planting, work organic matter into your soil. This could be compost, aged manure, or leaf mold. Adding 2 to 3 inches of organic matter and mixing it into the top 8 to 10 inches of soil improves drainage and adds nutrients. Turnips prefer a loose, crumbly soil texture because hard, compacted soil causes deformed roots. If you have heavy clay soil, adding compost becomes even more important for success.

The location you choose should receive at least 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight daily, though turnips can tolerate partial shade, especially in very hot climates. In areas where summers are extremely hot, afternoon shade actually helps prevent the plants from bolting, or flowering prematurely. Avoid planting turnips in the same spot where you grew other Brassicas the previous year, as this can increase disease pressure from soilborne pathogens.

You can grow turnips in traditional in-ground beds, raised beds, or even containers. A container should be at least 12 inches deep and wide enough to space plants properly. Some gardeners use succession planting, where they prepare multiple planting areas and sow seeds every two weeks during the appropriate season. This provides a continuous harvest rather than all turnips maturing at once.

Practical takeaway: If your soil is poor or compacted, build a raised bed filled with quality soil mix rather than trying to rehabilitate existing soil. This guarantees better results, especially for your first attempt at growing turnips. Mark your garden calendar to test soil in the fall for spring planting or in early summer for fall planting.

Planting Turnip Seeds and Timing Your Harvest

Turnips are grown from seeds rather than transplants, and seeds are sown directly into the garden soil where they will grow. Plant seeds about one-quarter inch deep and one inch apart in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches apart. Once seedlings emerge and develop their first true leaves, thin them to 3 to 6 inches apart, depending on the variety. Thinning is essential because crowded plants compete for nutrients and moisture, resulting in smaller roots.

Timing your planting correctly affects whether your turnips thrive or struggle. Turnips prefer cooler weather and actually taste better when grown in fall and early winter. For a fall harvest in most regions, plant turnip seeds in mid to late summer, typically 8 to 10 weeks before your first expected frost date. In spring, you can plant as soon as soil can be worked, though spring turnips sometimes mature during warm weather, which can make them tougher and more bitter than fall crops.

Water your turnip bed consistently, keeping soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Seeds need moisture to germinate, typically sprouting within 5 to 10 days. After germination, turnips need about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. In very hot or dry conditions, watering every few days may be necessary. Inconsistent watering causes cracked roots and promotes bolting.

You can begin harvesting turnip greens once they reach 4 to 6 inches tall, usually 3 to 4 weeks after planting. Pinch or cut individual leaves from the outer parts of the plant, leaving the center growing point intact so the plant continues producing. For the roots, begin harvesting when they reach about 2 inches in diameter—they'll continue growing larger. Most turnips are harvested when 2 to 3 inches in diameter, as larger roots become woody and less flavorful. Simply pull the root from the soil or use a garden fork to loosen the soil first.

Practical takeaway: Create a planting calendar based on your average first frost date. If your area has mild winters, you can actually extend your turnip season from late summer through winter. Thin seedlings promptly—the removed greens are edible and can go straight into salads or cooking.

Managing Pests, Diseases, and Common Growing Problems

Several pests target turnips and their relatives. Flea beetles are small, jumping insects that create tiny holes in leaves. While seedlings are most vulnerable, older plants typically tolerate flea beetle damage. Cabbage worms, the larvae of white butterflies, tunnel into leaves and roots. Harlequin bugs are colorful but destructive, feeding on plant juices. You can manage these pests using several non-chemical approaches. Row covers—lightweight fabric draped over plants—physically block insects from reaching seedlings. This works well for flea beetles and cabbage worms if applied before pests appear.

Several diseases can affect turnips. Clubroot is a soilborne disease that causes roots to become swollen and distorted. It thrives in acidic soil, so maintaining a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 helps prevent it. If clubroot appears in your garden, avoid planting Brassicas in that location for 4 to 7 years. Powdery mildew appears as a white coating on leaves, especially in humid conditions. Improving air circulation by spacing plants adequately and removing lower leaves reduces this problem. Black rot causes dark, sunken spots on leaves and roots and spreads through contaminated tools and water. Sterilizing tools between plants and avoiding overhead watering help prevent spread.

Nutrient deficiencies sometimes appear as yellowing leaves or stunted growth. If this occurs weeks into the growing season and your soil test didn't reveal obvious problems, a balanced fertilizer applied according to package directions can help. Boron deficiency causes hollow hearts inside the roots—a condition called brown heart. This is uncommon but more likely in very sandy soils. Adding compost or using a soil amendment containing boron prevents this problem.

Splitting or cracking roots result from irregular watering, particularly if dry periods are followed by heavy rain or watering. Maintaining consistent soil moisture prevents this. If rabbits or deer become a problem, a fence at least 2 feet tall keeps them out. Some gardeners report success using
