Free Guide to Growing Lettuce From Seeds

Understanding Lettuce Varieties and Seed Selection

Lettuce comes in several distinct varieties, each with different growing characteristics, flavors, and textures. When starting from seeds, knowing which types exist helps you choose what works best for your space and taste preferences. The main categories include leafy lettuce, butterhead, romaine, and crisphead varieties.

Leafy lettuce varieties like oak leaf, lollo, and red sail grow in loose bunches and don't form tight heads. These types mature faster—typically in 45 to 60 days—and tolerate crowding better than other varieties. Butterhead lettuce, which includes Boston and bibb types, forms loose heads with tender inner leaves. Romaine lettuce has tall, upright leaves and a crisp texture, maturing in 60 to 75 days. Crisphead varieties like iceberg require longer growing seasons of 70 to 85 days and need cooler temperatures to develop properly.

When purchasing seeds, check the seed packet for several important details: days to maturity, light requirements, temperature preferences, and spacing needs. High-quality seeds from established seed companies typically show germination rates of 75 to 95 percent. You can find seeds at garden centers, through mail-order catalogs, or from online retailers. Seed packets cost between $2 and $4 per packet, with each packet usually containing 100 to 500 seeds depending on variety.

Store lettuce seeds in a cool, dry location. Seeds remain viable for 4 to 5 years when kept at temperatures between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Many gardeners store seeds in sealed containers in a refrigerator or basement. Before planting, inspect seeds for any visible damage or mold. Most lettuce seeds are small and dark colored, though some varieties produce lighter seeds.

Practical takeaway: Start by selecting one leafy variety and one romaine variety for your first attempt. Leafy types provide faster results and build confidence, while romaine offers a more substantial harvest. Write down the maturity dates on your calendar so you know when to expect ready-to-pick lettuce.

Preparing Soil and Starting Containers

Lettuce grows successfully in various container types and soil conditions. You can start seeds indoors in small pots, cell trays, or seed-starting modules, or direct sow seeds outdoors into garden beds. The key requirement is soil that drains well while holding enough moisture for seed germination. Poor drainage leads to seed rot and fungal problems, while soil that dries out too quickly prevents seeds from sprouting.

For indoor seed starting, use a seed-starting mix rather than garden soil. Seed-starting mixes contain peat moss, coconut coir, or compost combined with perlite or vermiculite to create a light, fluffy texture. These mixes typically cost $8 to $15 per bag and can start hundreds of seeds. Garden soil alone is too dense and may contain weed seeds or soil-borne diseases. A standard seed tray measures 10 by 20 inches and holds 72 individual cells, making it suitable for starting multiple lettuce varieties at once.

When preparing soil for direct sowing in garden beds, work in 2 to 3 inches of compost or well-rotted organic matter into the top 6 to 8 inches of existing soil. This improves soil structure and water retention. Lettuce prefers soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, though it tolerates slightly acidic conditions. If you're unsure about your soil's pH, inexpensive soil test kits cost $5 to $10 at garden centers.

Indoor containers should have drainage holes in the bottom. Fill containers with moist seed-starting mix to about one-half inch from the rim. Gently firm the mix without compacting it heavily. The mixture should feel like a wrung-out sponge—moist but not waterlogged. If your mix is too dry, it won't absorb water evenly when you water after planting.

Practical takeaway: Fill your containers or prepare your garden bed one day before planting. This allows the soil to settle and ensures even moisture distribution. Test soil drainage by pouring water into a prepared area; it should drain within 5 to 10 seconds.

Sowing Seeds and Managing Germination

Lettuce seeds are small—about the size of a grain of sand—so handling them requires patience and care. You can sow seeds directly into containers or garden beds. For indoor starting, sprinkle seeds thinly across the soil surface, about one-quarter inch apart. Avoid clumping seeds together, as crowded seedlings compete for light and water, resulting in weak plants. One packet of seeds typically produces far more seedlings than most home gardeners need, so sowing sparingly prevents waste.

After sowing, cover seeds lightly with one-quarter inch of seed-starting mix or fine compost. Press gently so seeds make contact with soil. Water carefully using a spray bottle to avoid washing seeds away. The soil should feel moist to a depth of about one-half inch. Label each container or row with the variety name and planting date—this information becomes valuable when you harvest and evaluate which varieties performed best.

Lettuce seeds germinate without light, so you can keep containers in a warm, dark location initially. However, germination occurs faster with soil temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Seeds typically sprout within 7 to 10 days under these conditions. At temperatures below 50 degrees, germination slows significantly and may take 3 to 4 weeks. Conversely, soil temperatures above 75 degrees can trigger seed dormancy in some varieties, delaying sprouting.

Once seedlings emerge, move containers to bright light immediately. A sunny windowsill works, though seedlings grown on south-facing windows often become leggy as they stretch toward the light. If using indoor lighting, position grow lights 2 to 3 inches above seedlings and keep lights on for 14 to 16 hours daily. Rotate containers every few days to promote even growth. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged—check soil moisture daily. Seedlings are fragile and sensitive to both drought and flooding.

Practical takeaway: Set a phone reminder to check containers daily. Record the germination date on your label. Most seeds will show sprouts within 7 to 10 days, so mark your calendar for when to expect this milestone.

Thinning Seedlings and Transplanting

When seedlings develop their first true leaves—the second set of leaves that appear after the initial rounded cotyledons—thinning becomes necessary. Crowded seedlings compete for light, water, and nutrients, resulting in weak, spindly plants. Thinning involves removing extra seedlings to space remaining plants properly for healthy growth.

For most leafy lettuce varieties, thin seedlings to 2 to 3 inches apart. Romaine and butterhead types need 3 to 4 inches between plants. Use small scissors or pinch seedlings off at soil level rather than pulling them up, which can disturb the roots of neighboring plants. This process seems wasteful but prevents root damage to seedlings you're keeping. Remove the weakest-looking seedlings first, keeping the strongest, most vigorous plants.

Seedlings started indoors in containers need transplanting into larger pots when they develop their first true leaves and begin to outgrow their starting cells. Transplant seedlings into 2 to 3-inch pots filled with potting mix. Bury seedlings slightly deeper than they were in their starting containers—this encourages stronger root development. Water gently after transplanting and keep soil consistently moist for the next few days while roots recover from transplanting stress.

Hardening off—gradually acclimating indoor seedlings to outdoor conditions—occurs about 2 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Place containers outside in a sheltered, shaded location for a few hours on mild days. Gradually increase outdoor time and light exposure over 7 to 10 days until seedlings spend full days outside. This process prevents shock when seedlings are planted in the garden.

Direct-sown seeds in garden beds require thinning at the same true-leaf stage. After thinning, apply a thin layer of mulch between plants to conserv
