Understanding Citronella Plants: Origin and Growing Basics

Citronella plants have become popular household additions because they grow relatively well in both indoor and outdoor environments. Despite common belief, the plant most people call "citronella" is not the source of commercial citronella oil. That oil comes from a grass species (Cymbopogon nardus). The houseplant commonly labeled as citronella is typically Pelargonium citrosum, also known as the mosquito plant or citronella geranium. Understanding this distinction matters because it affects how you care for the plant and what results to expect.

The citronella plant originated in South Africa and has adapted well to cultivation in many climates. It belongs to the geranium family and produces leaves with a distinctive citronella scent when brushed or handled. The plant can reach heights of 2 to 4 feet, depending on growing conditions. Its leaves are deeply lobed and somewhat fuzzy, with a pale green to gray-green appearance. Small pink or lavender flowers may bloom during certain seasons.

When grown indoors, citronella plants thrive in bright, indirect light and moderate temperatures. Outdoors, they prefer sunny locations with well-draining soil. The plant grows relatively quickly during spring and summer months but slows considerably in fall and winter. Most citronella plants live several years with proper maintenance, though they may become woody and less attractive as they age.

Key facts to know before starting: Citronella plants prefer temperatures between 50 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. They're sensitive to frost and should not be exposed to temperatures below 40 degrees. The plant has a moderate growth rate compared to other geraniums. Understanding these baseline requirements helps set realistic expectations for indoor and outdoor cultivation.

Practical Takeaway: Before obtaining a citronella plant, confirm you can provide bright light for at least 6 hours daily and maintain temperatures above 50 degrees during the growing season. This foundation determines whether your plant will thrive or struggle.

Indoor Growing Conditions for Citronella Plants

Growing citronella indoors requires attention to light, humidity, temperature, and air circulation. These four factors work together to create an environment where the plant develops strong stems, healthy leaves, and occasional flowers. Indoor conditions present unique challenges because natural light is often limited, humidity may be low, and temperature fluctuations can stress the plant.

Light stands out as the most critical factor for indoor citronella cultivation. The plant needs 6 to 8 hours of bright, indirect light each day to develop properly. A south-facing or west-facing window often provides adequate light during fall and winter months. During spring and summer, when the sun is more intense, an east-facing window may be preferable to avoid leaf scorching. If natural light in your home is limited, a fluorescent or LED grow light positioned 12 to 18 inches above the plant can supplement natural light. Keep grow lights on for 12 to 14 hours daily to mimic seasonal growing patterns.

Indoor humidity levels typically range from 30 to 50 percent in most homes, which is lower than the 50 to 70 percent range citronella plants prefer. You can raise humidity around the plant through several methods. Placing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and a small amount of water creates a microclimate as water evaporates around the plant. Grouping multiple plants together increases the humidity in their immediate vicinity. Misting leaves with water two or three times weekly also helps, though this works best when done in early morning.

Indoor temperature should remain consistent, ideally between 60 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid placing the plant near heating vents, air conditioning units, or drafty windows, as temperature swings stress the plant and can cause leaf drop. Similarly, keep the plant away from radiators and other heat sources that create dry microclimates. Good air circulation prevents fungal issues and strengthens stems. A small fan set to low speed, positioned to gently move air around (but not directly at) the plant, helps prevent stagnant conditions.

Practical Takeaway: Create an indoor growing station near your brightest window with supplemental lighting if needed. Position the pot on a humidity tray and maintain temperatures between 60 and 72 degrees to replicate the plant's preferred growing conditions indoors.

Outdoor Growing Conditions and Seasonal Considerations

Citronella plants flourish outdoors when provided with sunlight, proper spacing, and protection from harsh weather. Outdoor growing offers advantages over indoor cultivation because natural sunlight is stronger and more complete, air circulation is better, and the plant can reach its full potential size. However, outdoor growers must manage weather variables and prepare for seasonal changes that indoor growers can control.

Sunlight requirements outdoors differ slightly from indoor needs. Citronella plants benefit from 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In extremely hot climates where temperatures regularly exceed 85 degrees, afternoon shade helps prevent leaf stress and wilting. In mild climates with moderate summers, full sun exposure produces bushier plants with stronger growth. Choose a location that receives morning sunlight, which dries dew and reduces fungal risk, with afternoon shade if you live in a hot region.

Soil preparation matters significantly for outdoor citronella cultivation. The plant requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Native soil should be amended with organic matter such as compost or aged bark to improve drainage and add nutrients. A soil mixture of 40 percent garden soil, 40 percent compost, and 20 percent perlite or coarse sand creates ideal drainage. The soil pH should be neutral to slightly acidic, ideally between 6.0 and 7.0. Test your soil before planting or amending it accordingly.

Outdoor citronella plants face seasonal challenges that require planning. In regions with frost or freezing temperatures, citronella must be grown as an annual (replanted each spring) or grown in containers that can be moved indoors before the first frost. The plant cannot survive prolonged exposure to temperatures below 40 degrees. In tropical and subtropical regions where frost doesn't occur, citronella can be grown year-round outdoors as a perennial. Mulching around the base with 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch helps regulate soil temperature and retain moisture in warm climates.

Wind exposure affects outdoor citronella plants, particularly in coastal areas or exposed locations. Strong winds can break stems, damage leaves, and increase water loss from foliage. Planting in a location with some wind protection, or using a windbreak, helps maintain plant health. In windy areas, staking or supporting tall plants prevents damage as they grow larger.

Practical Takeaway: Select an outdoor location with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight, prepare well-draining soil amended with compost, and plan for frost protection if you live in a region with freezing temperatures. This groundwork determines whether your outdoor citronella thrives for years or requires replanting annually.

Watering, Feeding, and General Plant Care

Watering represents one of the most important skills for citronella plant care. Overwatering causes root rot, one of the most common reasons citronella plants fail indoors and outdoors. The plant prefers soil that is moist but not soggy. A practical approach involves checking soil moisture before watering. Stick your finger 1 to 2 inches into the soil. If it feels dry at that depth, water thoroughly. If it still feels moist, wait several days before checking again.

Watering frequency varies with season, location, and growing medium. During spring and summer when the plant grows actively, citronella may need water every 5 to 7 days indoors, or every 3 to 5 days outdoors if weather is warm. In fall and winter, growth slows significantly, and watering needs decrease. Many indoor citronella plants require water only once every 10 to 14 days during cooler months. Outdoor plants in cooler climates may need even less frequent watering.

Water quality matters for long-term plant health. Chlorinated tap water is acceptable, though some growers report better results using rainwater or allowing tap water to sit for 24 hours before use, which allows chlorine to dissipate. Water temperature should be room temperature or slightly warm, not cold from the tap. Cold water shocks the root system and can cause leaf yellowing.
