Free Guide to Getting PR Packages and Products

Understanding What PR Packages and Products Actually Are

PR stands for "Public Relations," and PR packages or products refer to items that companies send to people who can help spread information about their brands. These packages might contain cosmetics, clothing, electronics, books, or other merchandise. Companies use this strategy because they want influential people—like bloggers, social media creators, journalists, and content creators—to review their products or mention them to their audiences.

The relationship between companies and recipients works through a simple exchange: a brand sends a product to someone who has an audience, hoping that person will talk about it. This could happen through a blog post, social media video, review article, or podcast discussion. The company gains visibility and potential customers, while the recipient receives free products and often payment or other compensation for their coverage.

PR packages come in different forms. Some are simple—a single product in a box with a note. Others are elaborate, containing multiple items, personalized messages, or exclusive samples not available to the general public. High-end brands sometimes create themed boxes or limited-edition collections specifically for media and influencers. The value can range from $20 to several thousand dollars depending on the brand and the recipient's influence level.

Understanding this ecosystem is important because receiving PR packages typically requires demonstrating that you have an audience or platform worth a company's investment. This doesn't necessarily mean you need millions of followers. Micro-influencers—people with smaller but highly engaged audiences—often receive packages because their followers tend to be more interested in their recommendations than larger, more general audiences.

Practical Takeaway: Before pursuing PR packages, assess what platform you currently have or could build. This might be a blog, YouTube channel, Instagram account, TikTok presence, podcast, or email newsletter. Companies evaluate whether your audience matches their target customers, so knowing your niche and audience size helps you understand what opportunities may be realistic for you.

Building Your Platform: The Foundation for Receiving PR

The most important factor in receiving PR packages is having a platform—a place where you regularly create content and where people follow your work. Without this, companies have no reason to send you products. They're investing in your ability to reach potential customers, so they need to see that you have an audience to reach.

A platform doesn't need to be huge. Brands often work with creators who have anywhere from a few hundred to several million followers or readers. What matters more is that your audience is real, engaged, and relevant to what the brand sells. A fashion blogger with 10,000 highly engaged followers interested in sustainable clothing may receive more PR packages than someone with 100,000 followers interested in random topics.

Building a platform takes time and consistency. If you're starting from scratch, consider these common options: start a blog using free platforms like Medium or WordPress.com; create a YouTube channel focused on a specific topic you enjoy; build an Instagram or TikTok account around a niche interest; start a podcast on a free platform; or begin an email newsletter using free services. The key is choosing something you'll stick with and posting regularly—whether that's weekly, twice weekly, or daily depending on the platform.

As you build your platform, focus on authenticity and consistency rather than rapid growth. Post content regularly, engage genuinely with your audience, and write or create things you believe in. Brands can tell the difference between an account with real engagement and one with fake followers or disengaged audiences. Real engagement means people comment, share, ask questions, and return for more content.

Growth typically accelerates over time as your content becomes more refined, your audience discovers you, and people share your work. Some creators see meaningful growth within 3-6 months of consistent posting, while others take longer. The speed varies based on your niche, how much time you invest, and how well your content resonates with people.

Practical Takeaway: Start building your platform today on channels that genuinely interest you. Commit to posting consistently for at least 3-6 months before expecting PR opportunities. Track your audience growth, engagement rates, and what topics generate the most interest. This data helps you later when reaching out to brands.

Identifying Brands and Companies That Send PR Packages

Not all companies offer PR packages, and not all companies in a particular industry work the same way. Some brands are very active in PR outreach, regularly sending packages to creators and journalists. Others rarely do. Understanding which brands are most likely to send you products helps you focus your efforts on realistic opportunities.

Generally, companies in certain industries are more PR-active than others. Beauty and cosmetics brands are among the most active PR distributors, followed by fashion, home goods, technology, fitness, food and beverage, and wellness brands. Publishing companies send review copies to book bloggers and reviewers. Luxury brands sometimes send PR packages, though they're often more selective. Tech companies frequently send new products to reviewers and tech-focused creators.

You can identify PR-active brands by observing what other creators in your niche receive. Look at creators with similar audience sizes and follow them on social media. When they post about unboxing videos or product reviews, note which brands are sending them packages. This gives you real data about which companies actively pursue partnerships with creators at your level.

Research specific brands you love or that match your audience. Visit their websites and look for a "press" or "media" section. Many brands have dedicated pages for press inquiries, media kits, or information about how to work with them. Some have media contact information listed. Others have sections specifically about sending products for review.

You can also find this information by searching "[Brand Name] press kit" or "[Brand Name] PR contact" on Google. LinkedIn can help you find PR managers and marketing directors at companies. Twitter and Instagram sometimes have company accounts with contact information or pinned posts about media inquiries. Email addresses for PR departments often follow patterns like pr@brandname.com or press@brandname.com.

Practical Takeaway: Create a spreadsheet listing 10-20 brands that align with your content and audience. For each brand, note any PR contact information you find, their Instagram handle, whether they have a press page, and any specific submission guidelines they mention. Update this list quarterly as you discover new brands.

Creating a Media Kit and Professional Presence

A media kit is a one-page document that tells companies about you, your audience, and why working with you makes sense. When you contact a brand about PR opportunities, you'll typically include or be asked for your media kit. This document should present your platform in a professional, honest way using actual data.

Your media kit should include your name, the name and description of your platform or channel, and contact information. It should state when you started creating content and how long you've been active. Include current audience numbers—be honest about these, as brands can verify them. For social media, mention your follower count and average engagement (likes, comments, shares). For blogs, mention monthly views. For email newsletters, mention subscriber numbers.

Describe your audience demographics if you know them. This might include age range, gender, geographic location, interests, or income level. If you use tools that track this information, include the data. You can also describe what you know from interacting with your audience. For example: "My audience is primarily women aged 25-40 interested in sustainable fashion and ethical manufacturing."

Include information about the types of content you create and how often you post. If you work with brands, mention some past partnerships or products you've featured. Include links to your best content pieces or videos. Add a one-sentence description of why brands should work with you—what unique value you bring. This might be your specific expertise, your engaged community, or your audience's alignment with certain product types.

Design your media kit to be clean, simple, and easy to read. Use a professional template (many free ones exist online) or create one in a simple design program. Save it as a PDF so it looks consistent when sent to different people. Keep it to one page—brands want quick information, not lengthy documents. Make sure your contact information is clear and correct.

Practical Takeaway: Create your media kit this week using free tools like Canva or a simple Word template. Include real numbers about your audience and platform. Update it quarterly as your audience grows and your statistics change. Have a professional email address for brand inquiries—avoid silly or unclear email handles.
