Free Guide to Getting a Job at Dairy Queen

Understanding Dairy Queen as an Employer

Dairy Queen operates over 7,000 locations worldwide, with approximately 4,500 in the United States. The company employs tens of thousands of workers across various positions, making it one of the largest quick-service restaurant employers in North America. Dairy Queen started in 1940 as a single ice cream shop in Illinois and has grown into a major franchise operation owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

Most Dairy Queen locations are independently owned and operated franchises rather than corporate-managed stores. This means hiring practices, schedules, pay rates, and work conditions can vary significantly between locations. A Dairy Queen in one city may operate differently from one in another state. Understanding this franchise structure is important because your experience applying and working at one location may differ from another.

Dairy Queen positions typically fall into two categories: crew members and management roles. Crew members work the counter, operate equipment, prepare food and beverages, and handle customer service. Management positions include shift leaders, assistant managers, and general managers who oversee daily operations. The company also hires positions in corporate offices, supply distribution centers, and franchise support roles, though most job seekers pursue restaurant locations.

The company has publicly stated that they value training and career development. Many current managers started as crew members and worked their way up. Dairy Queen offers training programs for new employees and advancement opportunities for those interested in longer-term careers. The company also participates in various employment programs and has stated commitments to hiring diverse workforces.

Practical takeaway: Research the specific Dairy Queen location where you want to work. Visit the store, observe the atmosphere, note the staff size, and find out if it's a franchise or corporate location. Call ahead and ask about current hiring or when they typically interview.

Job Positions Available at Dairy Queen

Dairy Queen locations typically hire for several crew-level positions. Crew members are the most common entry-level role and handle multiple responsibilities during shifts. Crew members take customer orders, operate the cash register, prepare food and drinks, clean equipment, and maintain the store. This position requires being on your feet most of your shift and multitasking during busy periods. Most crew positions are part-time, though full-time hours are sometimes available.

Crew lead or shift leader positions represent a step up from standard crew roles. These employees oversee other crew members during their shifts, ensure quality standards are met, handle customer complaints, and manage closing or opening procedures. Shift leaders typically earn between $1 to $3 more per hour than crew members and often have slightly more flexible scheduling. This role requires reliability and basic leadership ability.

Assistant manager positions involve more responsibility and typically require some prior restaurant experience or management training. Assistant managers handle inventory, schedule crew members, manage cash handling, conduct staff training, and ensure the location meets corporate standards. These positions often include benefits like health insurance and paid time off. Assistant manager pay varies widely but generally ranges from $28,000 to $35,000 annually depending on location and franchise.

General manager positions oversee the entire restaurant operation, including profit and loss, hiring decisions, customer relations, and all staff management. These positions typically require several years of restaurant experience and strong business knowledge. General managers earn between $35,000 and $50,000 annually at many locations, with some high-volume stores paying more. This role usually includes benefits and opportunities for bonus pay based on store performance.

Specialized positions may exist at some locations, such as kitchen specialists who focus solely on food preparation, or equipment operators who maintain soft-serve machines and other specialized equipment. Corporate positions, distribution center roles, and franchise support positions also exist but require applying through Dairy Queen's corporate channels rather than at individual locations.

Practical takeaway: Identify which position type matches your experience and availability. If you're new to work, target crew member roles. If you have retail or food service experience, consider applying for shift leader or assistant manager positions. Tailor your approach based on realistic fit with your background.

Preparing Your Application Materials

A completed job application is the first requirement for working at Dairy Queen. Most locations use paper applications that you complete in-store, though some franchises use online systems. The application asks for basic information: your full name, contact information, address, date of birth, and Social Security number. You'll also provide your availability (which days and times you can work), employment history, education background, and references.

Your employment history section should list previous jobs with employer names, your job titles, dates worked, reasons for leaving, and your supervisors' names if requested. Be honest about employment gaps and explain them briefly if asked—for example, "attended school full-time" or "relocating to this city." Most restaurant positions don't require years of experience, so even first-time applicants who provide honest information often succeed.

References are important parts of your application. You should provide contact information for people who can speak about your work habits and character. Former employers or managers are ideal. If you've never worked, teachers, coaches, volunteer coordinators, or community leaders can serve as references. Inform your references that you're listing them and that Dairy Queen may contact them. Provide their phone numbers and email addresses accurately—mistakes here mean the hiring manager cannot reach them.

Your availability significantly affects hiring decisions. Dairy Queen locations need coverage during all operating hours, which usually means early morning shifts starting at 5 or 6 AM, afternoon shifts, and closing shifts ending at 10 PM or later. Weekend availability is almost always required since restaurants operate seven days per week. Write your true availability on the application rather than listing times you think they want to hear—mismatches between stated availability and actual availability create problems later.

If applying online through a franchise's website, take time to complete all required fields fully. Copy-and-paste generic information into multiple applications often results in overlooked submissions. Customize your information for each location if possible. For online applications, double-check that all information is spelled correctly and phone numbers are accurate before submitting.

Practical takeaway: Prepare your information before visiting: employment dates, previous supervisor names and phone numbers, and reference contacts. Write down your honest availability for each day of the week. This preparation means cleaner applications and fewer mistakes that could eliminate you from consideration.

The Interview Process and What to Expect

After submitting an application, Dairy Queen hiring managers typically contact candidates within a few days to a week. You'll receive a phone call or text message scheduling an interview. Most first interviews happen at the restaurant location itself. Bring identification, your Social Security card (or information to fill out tax forms if hired), and any documentation of previous experience. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to show reliability.

The first interview is usually brief—typically 15 to 30 minutes. The hiring manager or shift leader asks standard questions about your work history, availability, reasons for wanting the job, and how you handle specific situations. Common questions include: "Tell me about your last job," "Why do you want to work at Dairy Queen?", "Describe a time you had a difficult customer," and "What are your career goals?" Answer honestly and keep responses focused. For example, rather than a long story about a customer conflict, briefly describe the situation, what you did, and what you learned.

Dress neatly for interviews—business casual or better is standard for restaurant management interviews. For crew positions, clean jeans and a collared shirt or professional top is appropriate. Avoid extremely casual clothing like sweatpants or graphic t-shirts. Avoid heavy perfume or cologne, and keep jewelry minimal. These choices show respect for the position and the interviewer's time.

Hiring managers assess your reliability, communication skills, ability to take direction, and attitude toward work. They're less focused on finding perfect experience and more focused on finding people they believe will show up consistently, follow instructions, and treat customers and coworkers respectfully. Answer questions directly without rambling. Make eye contact. Use a friendly tone of voice. Ask a question or two about the position or training to show genuine interest.

Some franchises conduct second interviews for positions above crew member level. Second interviews might involve meeting with the owner or regional manager, discussing compensation and benefits, or observing you during a mock scenario. If you're asked back for a second interview, it's a positive sign that you're being seriously considered.

Practical takeaway: Practice answering common interview questions out loud before your interview. Prepare 2 to 3 specific examples from previous jobs or school that show reliability
