Free Guide to Georgia Disabled Parking Tag Renewal

Understanding Georgia's Disabled Parking Tags and Why Renewal Matters

Georgia's disabled parking tag system provides reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities who have significant difficulty walking or have mobility limitations. These tags—also called handicapped parking permits—are issued by the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) and display a distinctive symbol that allows the holder to park in accessible spaces at stores, hospitals, government buildings, and other public locations.

The tags serve an important function in daily life. A person using a disabled parking tag can park closer to building entrances, reducing the distance they need to travel on foot. This can make a meaningful difference for someone managing chronic pain, recovering from surgery, using a wheelchair or walker, or experiencing other conditions that affect mobility. Without these tags, accessing everyday activities like grocery shopping or medical appointments becomes significantly more difficult.

Georgia issues two types of disabled parking tags: permanent tags and temporary tags. Permanent tags do not expire and do not need renewal. Temporary tags last for six months and must be renewed when they expire. Understanding which type of tag you have is the first step in knowing whether renewal is necessary. Your tag will clearly indicate whether it is permanent or temporary, usually printed on the tag itself or in any paperwork you received when it was issued.

Many people receive temporary tags initially—for example, after a surgery or during recovery from an injury. If your tag shows an expiration date, you will need to take steps to renew it before that date passes. Parking without a valid tag can result in a parking citation, even if you have a disability. The citation can be expensive, and it does not matter that your tag simply expired rather than was never issued.

Practical takeaway: Check your current disabled parking tag right now. Look for an expiration date printed on it. If it shows a date that has already passed or will pass soon, you will need to renew it through the Georgia DDS.

Steps to Renew Your Georgia Disabled Parking Tag

Renewing a temporary disabled parking tag in Georgia involves several straightforward steps. The process begins with gathering the required documents and ends with receiving your new tag in the mail. Most of this process can be completed in person at a Georgia DDS office, and some portions may be handled by mail.

The first step is to visit your local Georgia Department of Driver Services office. You can find the office nearest to you by visiting the DDS website and searching by county or city. Bring your current disabled parking tag, your driver's license or state identification card, and any medical documentation that supports your need for a disabled tag. Medical documentation typically means a letter from your doctor or healthcare provider stating that you have a permanent or long-term disability affecting your mobility.

When you arrive at the DDS office, explain that you need to renew your disabled parking tag. Staff will ask you to complete Form MV-10, which is the official application for disabled parking tags in Georgia. This form asks basic information about you, your disability, and your contact information. You do not need to provide detailed medical information on the form itself—the form mainly asks whether your disability is permanent or temporary. Your medical documentation supports your request but is separate from the form.

After submitting your form and documentation, the DDS staff will process your request. In many cases, they can issue you a new tag on the spot before you leave the office. In other cases, they may tell you that they will mail the new tag to your address. Ask the staff member which option applies to you so you know what to expect. If they mail it, ask approximately how long delivery typically takes—usually it is between one and two weeks.

If you cannot visit an office in person, you may be able to renew by mail. Contact your local DDS office to ask whether mail renewal is an option and what documents they need you to send. The mailing address will be provided to you by the office staff.

Practical takeaway: Locate your nearest Georgia DDS office now, and gather your driver's license, current tag, and any medical documentation before you visit. This prepares you to complete the renewal process quickly.

Medical Documentation Requirements for Renewal

Georgia law requires that people renewing disabled parking tags provide evidence that they have a disability that substantially affects their mobility. This evidence typically comes from a healthcare provider who knows your medical condition. Understanding what documentation is acceptable can help you gather the right paperwork before you visit the DDS office.

A letter from your doctor, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, or other licensed healthcare provider is the most common form of acceptable documentation. The letter should state that you have a permanent or long-term disability that limits your ability to walk or that causes you significant difficulty walking. The letter does not need to be long or highly detailed—often a single paragraph is sufficient. However, it should be dated and signed by the healthcare provider, and it should include the provider's name, title, license number (if one is available), and contact information.

The letter should indicate whether your condition is permanent or temporary. If temporary, it should state approximately how long the limitation is expected to last. If permanent, the letter should describe it as permanent or lifelong. This information helps the DDS determine whether to issue a permanent tag (if your condition is permanent and unlikely to improve) or a temporary tag that will need future renewal.

Some healthcare providers keep templates of disabled parking documentation letters on file. If you have a regular doctor, call the office and ask whether they can provide a letter for your disabled parking tag renewal. Many offices do this routinely and may not charge a fee, though some providers may charge a small administrative cost for preparing the letter.

If you do not have a regular healthcare provider or have not seen a doctor recently, you may need to schedule an appointment to obtain documentation. Urgent care clinics, federally qualified health centers, and community health clinics can often provide documentation if you cannot see your regular doctor. The healthcare provider needs to have examined you or reviewed your medical history in order to write the letter—they cannot provide documentation based on a phone call alone.

You should bring the original letter or a recent copy to your DDS office appointment. The staff will want to see it, though they typically will not take it from you permanently. Ask the staff whether they need you to leave a copy or whether you can take the original home after they review it.

Practical takeaway: Contact your healthcare provider's office now and request a letter stating that you have a permanent or long-term disability affecting your mobility. Ask how long it typically takes them to prepare the letter so you can plan your DDS office visit accordingly.

Documents to Bring to Your Renewal Appointment

Bringing the correct documents to your DDS office visit makes the process faster and prevents delays. Having everything ready before you arrive also reduces the time you spend waiting and navigating the office. Here is a list of what you should bring:

• Your current disabled parking tag (even if it is expired)
• Your driver's license or Georgia state identification card
• Medical documentation from a healthcare provider (a letter or form stating you have a disability affecting mobility)
• Proof of Georgia residency if you do not have a Georgia driver's license (a utility bill, lease, or mortgage statement dated within the last 60 days works well)
• A completed Form MV-10 if you want to fill it out before you arrive (optional—you can also fill it out at the office)

If you have lost your current tag and need it replaced, bring any paperwork showing that it was issued to you—such as a letter from the DDS office when you originally received it. If you do not have any paperwork, simply explain this to the staff when you arrive; they can look up your information in their system using your driver's license.

Bring original documents, not photocopies, whenever possible. The DDS staff will examine the originals to verify they are authentic. However, you can ask them whether they need you to leave a copy of your medical documentation or whether they will return the original to you.

If you are applying for a tag for someone else—for instance, you are a guardian or representative—bring documents showing that you have that authority. This might be a power of attorney document, guardianship papers, or other legal documentation. Call your local DDS office ahead of time if you are in this situation; they can tell you exactly what documents you need to bring.

Organize your documents in a folder or envelope so they do not get mixed up or lost while you are at the office. This is especially helpful if you are
