Understanding SAT Score Reports and Where to Find Them

When you take the SAT, the College Board processes your answers and creates a score report within a few weeks of your test date. Your SAT score report contains several pieces of information: your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score (ranging from 200-800), your Math score (also 200-800), your total score (400-1600), and a breakdown of how you performed on specific sections and question types. The report also shows your percentile ranking, which tells you what percentage of test-takers scored lower than you did.

Understanding what information appears on your score report helps you know what to look for when you retrieve it online. Beyond the main scores, your report includes details about your performance on sub-sections like Command of Standard English, Expression of Ideas, Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Math. If you took the SAT with Essay (prior to 2021), your report would also include essay scores, though this section was discontinued.

The College Board maintains records of SAT scores for a significant amount of time. If you tested after March 2015, your scores should be available through the College Board's online system. Historical scores from earlier test dates may require contacting the College Board directly or requesting official transcripts through your high school if they maintained records.

Your score report also indicates which colleges and universities you authorized to receive your scores. When you register for the SAT, you can choose up to four colleges to receive free score reports. Any additional reports beyond these four cost a fee. Knowing this information helps you understand what schools currently have your scores on file and whether you need to send additional reports.

Practical Takeaway: Before searching for your scores, gather information about when you took the SAT (test date) and which email address or College Board account you used to register. Having this information readily available makes the retrieval process smoother and faster.

How to Access Your SAT Scores Through the College Board Online Portal

The College Board's online student portal at sat.org is the fastest and most direct way to view your SAT scores once they've been processed and released. To access your scores, you'll need to create or log into your College Board account. If you don't already have an account, you can create one by visiting the College Board website and clicking on the account creation option. You'll need to provide your email address, create a password, and verify your email address by clicking a confirmation link the College Board sends to your inbox.

Once you've created your account or logged in, navigate to the section labeled "Your SAT Results" or "Score Reports." The College Board typically releases scores within 2-3 weeks after you take the SAT, though some administrations may take slightly longer. You'll see your scores displayed clearly, including your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score, Math score, and total score. The portal also shows the date you took the test and whether you sent scores to colleges.

If you haven't received your scores yet and expect them to be available, check the College Board's website for the official release date for your test administration. Different test dates have different release schedules. For example, if you took the SAT in March, scores might release in late April, while June test-takers might see their scores in July. The College Board publishes these timelines in advance so students know what to expect.

The online portal also allows you to send your scores to additional colleges beyond your initial four free reports. You can select which scores to send (if you've taken the SAT multiple times) and review where your scores have already been sent. Most colleges accept scores sent directly from the College Board through this online system, and the scores typically arrive at the institution within a few business days.

Practical Takeaway: Create your College Board account as soon as you register for the SAT. This ensures that when your scores are ready, you can view them immediately without having to go through account setup when you're anxious to see your results.

Requesting Official SAT Score Reports by Mail

While online access is faster, official printed score reports mailed directly to you or to colleges remain a valid option, particularly if you need documentation for certain purposes or prefer hard copies of your scores. You can order official SAT score reports through the College Board's website or by mail. To order online, log into your College Board account, locate the Score Reports section, and select the option to order official reports. You'll specify whether you want the reports sent to you personally or directly to colleges, universities, or other institutions.

The process of ordering reports by mail involves filling out a request form and mailing it to the College Board along with payment. The form requires your name, date of birth, SAT registration number (if you know it), test date, and the destination where you want the reports sent. You can find the mailing address and printable request forms on the College Board's official website under their contact or order section. Processing time for mailed requests typically takes 7-10 business days after the College Board receives your form, plus additional time for postal delivery.

Understanding the difference between regular and rush reports can be useful depending on your timeline. Regular reports take the standard processing time, while rush reports (when available) are processed faster—sometimes within 1-2 business days. Rush reports cost more than standard reports, so this option works best if you have a time-sensitive need, such as an upcoming college application deadline or enrollment decision.

Official score reports sent by mail come sealed in an envelope with the College Board's official seal, which some institutions still require for verification purposes. These sealed official reports are considered more formal documentation than digital copies and may be specifically requested by colleges, scholarship programs, or graduate programs. If you're unsure whether an institution needs an official mailed report or accepts digital scores, check their admissions website or contact their admissions office directly before ordering.

Practical Takeaway: Order extra official reports when you first receive your scores rather than waiting. This prevents delays if you later decide to apply to additional colleges or programs that weren't on your original list, and bulk orders sometimes cost less per additional report than ordering a single report later.

Finding Scores from Past Test Administrations and Multiple Attempts

If you've taken the SAT more than once, your College Board account displays scores from all your test attempts. When you log into your online portal, you'll see a record of each test date you participated in with the corresponding scores from that administration. This feature is particularly useful when deciding whether to send a specific set of scores to colleges, as you can compare your performance across multiple attempts and choose the strongest scores to report.

Most colleges use a "score choice" policy, meaning they allow you to decide which test dates' scores to send. Some highly selective colleges require you to send all scores from all attempts, while others genuinely don't care which scores you submit. Checking individual college policies on score choice helps you make informed decisions about which scores to report. The College Board's website includes a college search tool where you can look up each school's specific score policies.

If you took the SAT before 2005, accessing those scores becomes more complicated. The College Board may not have digital records available for older administrations. In this case, you can contact the College Board directly by phone or through their website's contact form to request information about historic scores. You may need to provide your Social Security number, date of birth, and the approximate year you took the test to help them locate your records. If the College Board doesn't have records, your high school or guidance counselor may have maintained copies of your score reports in their files, particularly if you were a student when you took the test.

Understanding score validity is also important. SAT scores are generally considered valid indefinitely for personal records, but colleges and universities typically only consider scores from a certain timeframe—usually within the last 5 years. If you took the SAT more than 5 years ago and are now applying to college, those scores may be too old for most institutions. However, if you're using SAT scores for professional purposes or personal reference, older scores can still provide meaningful information about your academic performance at the time you took the test.

Practical Takeaway: Organize a spreadsheet or document listing all your SAT test dates and corresponding scores once you've located them. This makes it easy to reference when filling out college applications and helps you track your academic progress over time.
