Free Guide to Finding Your IRS PIN

Understanding What an IRS PIN Is and Why You Might Need One

An IRS Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a six-digit security code that the Internal Revenue Service uses to protect your tax account. Think of it as a unique password that belongs only to you and the IRS. The PIN serves as an extra layer of protection against identity theft and tax fraud.

The IRS started using PINs as part of their broader security efforts. Identity theft has become increasingly common, and tax-related identity theft is a significant problem. When someone steals your Social Security number, they may try to file a false tax return in your name to claim a refund fraudulently. Having a PIN makes this much harder because the scammer would need both your Social Security number and your unique PIN to file a return.

Your IRS PIN is different from a password you might create yourself. You don't choose this number—the IRS generates it and sends it to you. Once you have a PIN, you'll use it when filing your tax return and when accessing your IRS account online through the IRS website.

Several types of people find PINs particularly useful. If you've been a victim of identity theft in the past, the IRS may assign you a PIN automatically. Military members serving overseas sometimes receive PINs for additional security. People who have had their tax accounts flagged for suspicious activity might also receive a PIN. Additionally, if you work with a tax professional or tax software company, they may use your PIN as part of the filing process.

According to IRS data, tax-related identity theft affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. In recent years, the IRS has expanded PIN usage to help prevent these crimes. The agency has made obtaining and using a PIN more straightforward, though the process does require some steps on your part.

Practical Takeaway: Before searching for your PIN, understand that this is a security tool the IRS has issued specifically to you. If you've never received a PIN and don't believe you need one, you may not have one on file yet. The next sections will explain how to find one if it exists and how to obtain one if you don't have it.

How to Check if You Already Have an IRS PIN

The first step in finding your IRS PIN is determining whether you already have one. Many people don't realize the IRS has already issued them a PIN. The IRS sends PINs through the mail to your address on file, so if you've moved recently, the notice might not have reached you.

The most direct way to check for an existing PIN is to visit the official IRS website at irs.gov. The IRS offers a tool called the "IRS Online Account" that allows you to view information about your tax account, including whether a PIN has been issued to you. To access your online account, you'll need to create login credentials using the IRS's secure authentication system. This process requires your Social Security number, filing status, and the amount from a prior tax return.

When you successfully log into your IRS Online Account, you'll see several pieces of information about your tax account. If you have a PIN, it will typically be displayed in your account settings or security section. The PIN shown here is the one you'll use for tax filing and other IRS communications. Write this number down in a secure location—perhaps in a password manager or a locked drawer at home, but not on a sticky note on your computer.

Another way to check is by looking through your mail from the IRS. If the agency has issued you a PIN, they will have sent a notice about it. These notices are usually labeled with IRS Notice 5071C or similar documentation. Search through any IRS correspondence you've received over the past few years. The notice will clearly state your PIN and explain why it was issued to you.

If you filed a tax return in the past two years, check your records from that filing. Some tax software programs display your PIN in your account or in the filed return itself. If you used a tax professional, they may have your PIN documented in your tax file.

It's important to note that not everyone has a PIN yet. The IRS is gradually rolling out PIN requirements, but they're not yet mandatory for all taxpayers. If you don't find evidence of an existing PIN after checking these sources, that's normal—it simply means one hasn't been issued to you yet.

Practical Takeaway: Create an IRS Online Account if you haven't already. This single action will show you whether a PIN exists for your account and will also give you ongoing access to your tax information. The account creation process typically takes about 10 minutes.

Creating an IRS Online Account to View Your PIN

If you don't already have an IRS Online Account, creating one is a straightforward process that gives you direct access to your tax information and any PIN associated with your account. The IRS website provides step-by-step instructions for this process, and it's completely free.

To start, go to irs.gov and look for the link to "IRS Online Account." The IRS website interface guides you through creating login credentials. You'll have two main options for authentication. You can use an existing login from another government agency if you have one (such as from the Social Security Administration), or you can create credentials specifically for the IRS using an email address.

The IRS uses a security system called identity verification to confirm you are who you claim to be. During this process, you'll need to provide personal information including your Social Security number, filing status from your most recent tax return, and a specific amount from that return. Make sure you have a copy of your most recent tax return handy before starting this process, as you'll need exact figures from it.

The identity verification step typically asks multiple-choice questions based on your financial history. You might be asked about addresses where you've lived, loans you've taken out, or other financial details. These questions are designed to verify your identity in a way that someone else couldn't easily answer. Answer these questions carefully—if you get too many wrong, you may need to try again or use an alternative method.

Once you've successfully verified your identity, you'll receive confirmation and can set up your full account. You'll create a username and password that you'll use to log in going forward. Choose a strong password that combines letters, numbers, and symbols. Write this password down or store it in a password manager—don't rely on memory alone, as you might not access this account frequently.

After your account is fully set up, logging in will show you your tax account information. You can view past returns you've filed, check the status of refunds, see any notices the IRS has sent you, and find your PIN if one has been issued. The account also shows estimated tax information and allows you to update your address if you've moved.

If the identity verification process doesn't work for you—perhaps because you don't have enough financial history or you answer the questions incorrectly—the IRS offers an alternative. You can request an account using a video chat process where a real person verifies your identity. This option may take longer but is worth trying if the automated process doesn't work.

Practical Takeaway: Set aside about 15 minutes in a quiet environment to create your IRS Online Account. Have your most recent tax return and a valid email address ready. Once your account is set up, you can log in anytime to check your PIN and other tax information, so this is a one-time task that gives you ongoing access.

Requesting a PIN if You Don't Have One

If you've checked your IRS account and confirmed that you don't have a PIN, or if you've never received one and believe you need one for security reasons, you can request one from the IRS. The process for requesting a PIN differs slightly depending on your situation, but several pathways are available.

The most common way to request a PIN is through your IRS Online Account. If you've set up an account as described in the previous section, you may see an option to request a PIN. Look in the account settings or security settings section. Some accounts have a specific link to "Request a PIN" or "Get a PIN." The IRS will process your request and mail a new PIN to your address on file within a specific timeframe, typically several weeks.

If you're unable to request a PIN through your online account, you can request one by mail. Contact the IRS directly by calling their phone number found on irs.gov, and ask them to send you Form 13614-C, which is related to tax preparation, or
