Free Guide to Finding Your Filed Tax Returns

Understanding Why You Might Need Your Filed Tax Returns

Your filed tax return is an official record of your income and taxes paid to the IRS for a specific year. This document contains detailed information about your earnings, deductions, credits, and the amount of tax you owed or any refund you received. There are many situations in life where you'll need a copy of this document.

Mortgage lenders typically request your last two years of tax returns when you apply for a home loan. They use this information to verify your income and assess your ability to pay back the loan. According to the Federal Reserve, the average mortgage approval process involves reviewing tax returns for most applicants. Similarly, landlords often request tax returns when you're applying to rent an apartment or house, as they want proof of stable income to ensure you can pay rent on time.

Other common reasons to obtain your filed returns include applying for personal loans, business loans, or lines of credit. Some employers request tax returns during the hiring process, particularly for positions involving financial responsibilities. Government agencies may need your returns when you're applying for certain programs. Additionally, if you're in the middle of a divorce or custody proceeding, your tax returns may be required as part of legal documentation.

Tax professionals and accountants frequently need copies of your previous years' returns to prepare your current year's taxes accurately. This helps them identify trends in your income, understand recurring deductions, and ensure consistency year to year. Students applying for federal student aid also need to provide tax return information through the FAFSA process.

Practical takeaway: Keep a list of organizations or situations where you've had to provide tax returns. This personal record helps you remember where copies may already exist and reminds you why maintaining organized tax documents matters for your financial life.

The Different Ways to Obtain Your Filed Tax Returns

The IRS and various other sources can provide you with official records of your filed tax returns. Understanding each method helps you choose the fastest and most convenient option for your specific situation. Each method has different requirements, processing times, and costs.

The IRS maintains records of all filed tax returns. According to the IRS, they keep electronically filed returns and paper returns that have been processed in their system. You have several official channels through which you can request this information. The most common methods include requesting Form 4506-C (Request for Transcript of Tax Return), which is the official IRS form for obtaining a copy of an actual tax return you filed.

If you need just basic information from your return—such as filing status, adjusted gross income, or tax paid—you can request a transcript instead of the full return. The IRS offers multiple types of transcripts: Account Transcript, Record of Account Transcript, Verification of Non-filing Letter, and Tax Return Transcript. These are often cheaper or free and process more quickly than obtaining a full copy of your return.

The IRS processes transcript requests submitted by mail in approximately 5 to 10 business days. Online requests through their transcript ordering system can deliver results in as little as a few days for some services. Telephone requests can be processed during the call for certain types of transcripts. Third-party services—such as tax preparation companies, payroll providers, or financial institutions—may also have copies of your returns if they prepared or filed them originally.

Your tax professional or accountant may retain copies of returns they prepared for you. Some employers have records of W-2 information related to specific years. Banks and lending institutions that received copies of your returns for loan applications may still have them on file, though there's no guarantee.

Practical takeaway: Before requesting official copies from the IRS, contact your accountant, tax preparation software company, or previous lenders to see if they have a copy readily available. This can save you processing time and fees.

How to Request Transcripts and Returns Directly from the IRS

The IRS provides several direct methods for obtaining transcripts and copies of your filed returns. The method you choose depends on how quickly you need the information and what type of information you actually need.

The online method is often the quickest option. You can visit the IRS website and create an account in their transcript ordering system. This secure service allows you to request various types of transcripts and have them delivered by mail to your address on file. The IRS website provides a dedicated section for ordering transcripts where you can select the year, type of transcript needed, and your delivery preference. Most online transcript requests are processed within 5 business days, though this varies by transcript type and IRS processing volume during tax season.

For phone requests, you can call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946. A representative can discuss what information you need and may be able to provide certain transcript information over the phone or via mail. According to IRS data, phone representatives can typically help you obtain Account Transcripts during your call in some cases, though full tax return copies require mail delivery.

Mail is a traditional option that remains available. You'll complete IRS Form 4506 (for actual tax return copies) or Form 4506-C-Z (for transcripts). These forms require your personal information, tax identification number, the years you need, and your signature. Mail the completed form to the appropriate IRS address listed on the form instructions. Processing time by mail typically ranges from 2 to 4 weeks, but can extend longer during peak tax season (February through May).

The IRS also accepts faxed requests in some cases. If you're working with a tax professional or financial institution, they may send your request via fax on your behalf. A fax request generally processes within 5 to 10 business days.

There is typically no fee for obtaining transcripts from the IRS. If you request an actual certified copy of your filed return using Form 4506-C, there may be a small fee. As of 2024, the IRS charges approximately $35 for certified copies, though this can change. Transcripts remain free of charge.

Practical takeaway: Determine whether you actually need the full tax return or if a transcript will work for your purpose. Most lenders, employers, and agencies accept transcripts, which are free and process faster than full return copies.

Working with Your Tax Professional to Access Your Returns

If you used a tax professional—whether a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax preparation service—to file your returns, they often have copies readily available. This is frequently the fastest and easiest way to obtain your filed returns.

Tax professionals are required to maintain client records for specific periods. According to IRS regulations, tax professionals must keep client records for at least three years, though many maintain records longer. These records typically include copies of returns they prepared and filed on your behalf. When you contact your tax professional requesting a copy of a previously filed return, they can usually provide it within a few days.

If you used a tax preparation service like H&R Block, TurboTax, or Jackson Hewitt, your returns are likely stored in their system. These companies maintain client accounts that provide access to prior-year returns. If you created an account with these services, you can log in to your account and often retrieve your return directly. Many of these platforms allow you to view, download, and print your returns from prior years without any additional cost. According to industry data, the major tax preparation platforms maintain return records for at least seven years for most customers.

Some employers maintain records of tax returns you provided during the hiring process. If you submitted a copy with your application or during onboarding, the human resources department may have it on file. Contacting HR is worth trying, especially if the return you need is recent.

Financial institutions where you've applied for loans—banks, credit unions, or mortgage companies—may retain copies of returns you provided. These institutions are typically required to keep loan application files for set periods. Contacting the loan officer or applications department to ask about their record retention policies is reasonable.

Practical takeaway: Make a phone call to your tax preparer before going through the IRS process. Give them the specific year needed and ask about their turnaround time. Many can provide copies the same day or next business day, which is faster than any IRS process.
