Free Guide to Finding Your Car's Wix Oil Filter

Understanding Your Vehicle's Oil Filter System

An oil filter is a critical component of your vehicle's engine that removes dirt, debris, and contaminants from your engine oil. Over time, engine oil circulates through your engine and collects particles that can damage engine components. The oil filter traps these particles, keeping your oil cleaner and your engine running more smoothly. Your vehicle's manufacturer recommends changing your oil filter regularly—typically every 3,000 to 7,000 miles, depending on your vehicle type and oil type.

Wix is one of the largest oil filter manufacturers in North America, producing filters for numerous vehicle makes and models. The company manufactures filters for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) purposes and also sells filters through the aftermarket. Wix filters are known for their pleated paper media, which increases the surface area available to trap contaminants. The company operates manufacturing facilities in the United States and maintains strict quality control standards.

Understanding where your oil filter is located and what type your vehicle needs is the first step toward maintaining your vehicle's engine health. Different vehicles have filters in different locations—some are easily accessible from above the engine, while others require removing components or getting underneath the vehicle. Knowing your vehicle's specific filter location and part number can save you time and frustration during maintenance.

Wix produces oil filters in various sizes and specifications to match the unique requirements of different engines. The filter's size, thread pitch, and pressure relief valve settings are engineered to work with specific engine designs. Installing the wrong filter type could result in improper oil flow or filtration, potentially affecting engine performance and longevity.

Practical Takeaway: Before searching for your Wix oil filter, gather your vehicle's year, make, model, and engine size. This information is typically found on your vehicle registration, owner's manual, or the driver's side door jamb. Having these details ready will make the search process more efficient and accurate.

Finding Your Vehicle's Owner's Manual and Maintenance Information

Your vehicle's owner's manual contains the most reliable information about your specific model's oil filter requirements and location. The manual specifies the exact filter part number, capacity, and specifications for your engine. Most owner's manuals include a section on maintenance schedules and fluid specifications, usually near the back of the document.

If you don't have a physical copy of your owner's manual, you have several options for locating one. Many vehicle manufacturers provide free digital copies on their websites—simply search for "[Your Vehicle Make] owner's manual PDF" and the manufacturer's name. Websites like ManualsLib.com and Owner'sManuals.info host thousands of vehicle manuals that can be viewed or downloaded without charge. You can also visit a dealership for your vehicle's make, where service departments often have copies available or can direct you to online resources.

The owner's manual identifies the oil filter location through detailed diagrams and photographs. These diagrams show where components are positioned under the hood and sometimes underneath the vehicle. Many manuals include step-by-step instructions for filter replacement, which can help you understand the access points and any components that may need to be moved or removed.

Beyond the filter specifications, your manual contains other valuable maintenance information. It outlines the recommended oil change interval, oil viscosity (such as 5W-30 or 10W-40), and total oil capacity. Different engines have different requirements—a compact sedan might use a smaller, simpler filter than a pickup truck with a larger engine. Your manual ensures you select the correct filter for your specific engine configuration.

Some owner's manuals also provide information about where to purchase replacement parts and lists of authorized service centers. While not necessary for finding the right Wix filter, this information can be helpful if you have questions about installation or need professional service.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your owner's manual and bookmark the maintenance and specifications section. Write down your vehicle's required oil filter part number and oil viscosity on a note card you keep in your vehicle. This reference card will be useful for years to come whenever you need to purchase replacement filters or oil.

Using Vehicle Identification Information to Locate Your Filter

Your vehicle's identification number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code that serves as your vehicle's fingerprint. This number contains detailed information about your vehicle's year, make, model, engine type, and other specifications. When you provide your VIN to filter databases or retailers, the system can pinpoint the exact filter your engine requires. The VIN is typically located on the driver's side of the windshield, visible from outside the vehicle, and also appears on your vehicle registration and insurance documents.

Vehicle identification numbers are structured in a specific way that contains meaningful information. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and country of origin. Characters four through eight describe the vehicle type, series, and body style. Characters nine and ten contain the safety system and model year information. The final seven characters are the sequential production number unique to your individual vehicle. This detailed encoding means that two vehicles with the same year, make, and model might have different engines and therefore require different filters if they were produced in different model years or with different engine options.

You can use your VIN to search on manufacturer websites and filter retailer databases. Wix's official website includes a "Find a Filter" tool where you can enter your VIN to receive specific filter recommendations. Retailers like AutoZone, O'Reilly Auto Parts, NAPA, and Advance Auto Parts all have online VIN search tools on their websites. These tools are designed to reduce the chance of ordering the wrong filter by automatically cross-referencing your vehicle's specifications with their inventory systems.

Some vehicle information databases, like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) database, allow you to enter your VIN to retrieve detailed specifications about your vehicle. While these government resources are primarily focused on safety recalls and technical specifications, they confirm your vehicle's exact engine configuration. This confirmation can be especially helpful if you own a vehicle with multiple engine options available in a particular year.

If you're buying a used vehicle and the previous owner's manual is missing, using your VIN through multiple sources provides cross-verification. If three different retailers' VIN search tools return the same filter part number, you can be confident that part is correct for your vehicle.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your VIN and write it on the same note card where you've recorded your filter information. Visit at least two different online retailers' VIN search tools and verify they return the same filter part number. This cross-checking method significantly reduces the possibility of ordering an incorrect filter.

Searching Wix's Official Product Database

Wix manufactures filters under several brand names including WIX, MANN-FILTER, and Purolator. When searching for a Wix filter, you're potentially finding products manufactured by Wix regardless of which brand name appears on the packaging. Wix's official website (wixfilters.com) provides a searchable database where you can locate filters by vehicle specifications or by part number if you already know it.

Wix's website includes a "Find My Filter" tool that allows you to search using multiple methods. You can enter your vehicle's year, make, and model to receive filter recommendations. The tool displays the part number, a product image, and often a cross-reference chart showing equivalent filter models from competing manufacturers. This cross-reference information is valuable because many filters from different manufacturers are functionally equivalent—they may have different part numbers but perform similarly.

If you already have a filter part number from your owner's manual or from another source, you can search Wix's database by entering that part number directly. The database returns information about that specific filter, including its specifications, equivalent models, and vehicle applications. This is particularly useful if you're replacing an existing filter and want to verify you have the correct information.

Wix's product pages include technical specifications such as the spin-on or cartridge type, thread size, micron rating, and flow capacity. The micron rating indicates the size of particles the filter can trap—smaller numbers mean finer filtration. Most automotive oil filters have micron ratings between 20 and 25 microns, which traps particles too small to see with the naked eye. Wix publishes this information so consumers can understand the filtration capabilities of different models.

The company's website also provides information about where to purchase their filters. While Wix is primarily a wholesale manufacturer, their filters are distributed through major retailers. The "Where to Buy" section on Wix's website lists retailers and online platforms where Wix filters are available
