Free Guide to Finding Jobs for Teenagers at Fourteen

Understanding Work Laws and Age Requirements for Teenagers

Before starting a job search at age fourteen, it's important to understand the legal rules that protect young workers. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a federal law that sets minimum age requirements for work. In most cases, fourteen is the minimum age for non-agricultural jobs, but there are specific limitations on the types of work you can do and the hours you can work.

At fourteen, you cannot work in certain industries considered hazardous, such as mining, logging, or manufacturing jobs involving heavy machinery. You also cannot work in jobs that require operating power-driven equipment or working in environments with extreme temperatures. These restrictions exist to keep young workers safe from serious injury.

Your state may have additional rules that are stricter than federal law. Some states require work permits or certificates before you can begin employment. For example, California requires fourteen-year-olds to obtain a permit, while other states may not have this requirement. You'll want to check your state's Department of Labor website to learn about local rules specific to your area.

Hour restrictions also apply. During the school year, federal law allows fourteen and fifteen-year-olds to work no more than three hours on school days, eight hours on non-school days, and fourteen hours per week. During summer break or school holidays, you may work up to eight hours per day and forty hours per week. However, your state may have different rules, so verify what applies where you live.

Understanding minimum wage is also important. The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 per hour, but many states have set higher minimum wages. New York, for example, has a minimum wage of $15 per hour in some regions, while other states follow the federal rate. Research what minimum wage applies in your location so you know what to expect when negotiating pay.

Practical Takeaway: Visit your state's Department of Labor website and write down the work hour limits, any permit requirements, and the minimum wage in your area. Keep this information handy when you begin your job search and during interviews.

Job Types That Commonly Hire Fourteen-Year-Olds

Many businesses specifically look for teenage workers, particularly in retail, food service, and customer service roles. Understanding which industries are most likely to hire at your age helps you focus your search on realistic opportunities. Retail stores like Target, Walmart, and mall-based shops frequently hire fourteen-year-olds for positions such as cashier, stock associate, or fitting room attendant. These jobs teach valuable skills like customer service, money handling, and inventory management.

The food service industry is another major employer of teenagers. Fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle, Panera, and Chick-fil-A often hire starting at age fourteen for positions including crew member, cashier, or prep cook. These roles involve food handling, working as part of a team, and managing customer interactions under time pressure. Some restaurants may require food handler certification, which you can often obtain through online courses at little to no cost.

Grocery stores hire fourteen-year-olds for several positions, including bagger, cashier, and stocker. Companies like Kroger, Whole Foods, and Safeway typically have structured programs for teen workers and often offer flexible scheduling to accommodate school. Grocery store jobs provide experience with technology (scanners and payment systems) and physical work like stocking shelves or organizing produce.

Other common options include babysitting and pet sitting through platforms or neighborhood connections, lawn care and yard work (either self-employed or through companies), movie theater positions (concession, usher, ticket booth), amusement park seasonal work, library assistant roles, and delivery services for newspapers or flyers. Some communities also have teen summer employment programs run by parks and recreation departments or local nonprofits that create job opportunities specifically for young workers.

Don't overlook smaller local businesses. Family-owned restaurants, hardware stores, local shops, and service businesses may be more flexible about hiring younger workers and may offer mentorship opportunities. These businesses sometimes have less formal hiring processes and may be more willing to work around your school schedule.

Practical Takeaway: Make a list of five to ten specific businesses in your area that commonly hire teenagers. Include both large chains and local businesses. Visit their websites or call to learn about current openings and age requirements for specific positions.

Creating a Competitive Resume and Cover Letter

Even without previous work experience, you can create a strong resume that shows employers what you bring to a position. Start with your contact information at the top: your full name, phone number, and email address. Choose a professional-sounding email address (something like firstname.lastname@email.com rather than a nickname-based address). Include your city and state, but you don't need to include your full address for safety reasons.

In a section called "Education," list your school name, graduation year, and relevant coursework or achievements. If you maintain a strong GPA (3.5 or higher), include it. If you've taken relevant classes like business, communication, or technology courses, mention those. You might also note any academic honors, awards, or leadership positions you hold, such as being on the honor roll or serving as class representative.

The "Skills" section is important when you have no work experience. List abilities that apply to the job you're seeking. For retail positions, include skills like customer service, communication, basic math, or technology use. For food service, mention teamwork, time management, or attention to detail. Include language skills if you speak more than one language. Don't overstate your abilities, but do highlight genuine strengths.

Under "Activities and Volunteer Experience," include any clubs, sports, volunteer work, or community service you've done. Volunteer work at food banks, animal shelters, libraries, or community events demonstrates responsibility and work ethic. School activities like debate team, robotics club, or theater show commitment and teamwork abilities.

Keep your resume to one page, using clear formatting with section headings in bold. Use a readable font like Arial or Calibri in size 11 or 12. Avoid bright colors or fancy designs—employers want to focus on your information, not decorative elements.

For a cover letter, keep it brief (three to four short paragraphs). Write it specifically for each job, mentioning the position title and company name. Explain why you're interested in that particular job and what strengths you'd bring. Avoid repeating your resume word-for-word. Instead, expand on one or two key points that make you a good fit. End by expressing enthusiasm and indicating how the employer can reach you.

Practical Takeaway: Create a template resume and cover letter this week. Save them on your computer and customize the cover letter for each job you pursue. Ask a teacher, parent, or school counselor to review them for clarity and professionalism.
