Free Guide to Finding Full Mattresses in Your Area

Understanding Full Mattress Dimensions and Types

A full mattress, also called a double bed, measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. This size falls between a twin mattress (38 inches by 75 inches) and a queen mattress (60 inches by 80 inches). Understanding these dimensions matters when you're searching for a mattress locally because you need to know whether it will fit your bedroom space and bed frame.

Full mattresses come in several construction types, and learning about each helps you understand what's available in your area. Innerspring mattresses use metal coils as the support system and typically cost between $300 and $800 new. Memory foam mattresses contour to your body shape and usually range from $400 to $1,200. Hybrid mattresses combine coils and foam, offering benefits of both, and typically cost $600 to $1,500. Latex mattresses provide natural materials and durability, generally priced from $800 to $2,000. Airbeds use adjustable air chambers instead of traditional support systems.

Mattress firmness levels—soft, medium, and firm—affect how they feel and perform. Soft mattresses have more give and suit people who like sinking feeling. Medium firmness offers balanced support for most sleepers. Firm mattresses provide more support and work well for back sleepers or heavier individuals. When searching your area, knowing which firmness you prefer helps narrow down your options significantly.

Mattress age and condition matter when considering used options. New mattresses last 7 to 10 years on average. A mattress that's 3 to 5 years old has already gone through initial softening but should have several good years remaining. Take practical takeaway: Before searching locally, measure your bedroom doorway, hallway, and bed frame to ensure a full mattress will fit through your spaces and onto your frame.

Searching Through Local Furniture Retailers

Traditional furniture stores remain one of the most straightforward places to find full mattresses in your area. These retailers typically carry multiple brands and can order stock that isn't currently on the showroom floor. National chains like Ashley Furniture, Rooms to Go, and Mor Furniture maintain locations throughout the United States, often with multiple stores per region. Regional chains vary by location but may include stores like Raymour & Flanigan in the Northeast or City Furniture in the Southeast.

When visiting furniture stores, staff members can show you different mattress types side by side, allowing you to feel various options in person. Most stores have display mattresses where you can lie down for several minutes to test firmness and support. This hands-on experience helps you make decisions based on actual feel rather than descriptions alone. Many furniture stores also offer delivery and setup services, which you can factor into your total cost.

Furniture store pricing typically includes flexibility. Salespeople often have authority to offer discounts, bundle deals, or extended payment plans. Many stores run regular sales around holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Black Friday. If you're visiting without urgency, you might find better pricing during these promotional periods. Some stores offer price matching if you find the same mattress advertised for less elsewhere locally.

Questions to ask furniture store staff include: What's the warranty coverage? Can you deliver this week or next? Do you remove old mattresses? What's your return policy if I'm unsatisfied? Do you offer financing options? Practical takeaway: Visit multiple furniture stores in your area, test mattresses by lying down for at least 3 to 5 minutes on each, and compare prices across at least three different retailers before making your purchase decision.

Exploring Warehouse Clubs and Big-Box Retailers

Warehouse clubs like Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's Wholesale carry full mattresses at prices often lower than traditional furniture stores. Costco typically stocks 15 to 20 different mattress models at any given time, with prices ranging from $400 to $1,800 for full-size options. Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale offer similar pricing and selection. These venues require membership, but memberships often cost $45 to $110 annually and can save money on multiple purchases throughout the year.

Big-box retailers like Walmart, Target, and Bed Bath & Beyond maintain full mattress inventory both in-store and online with local pickup options. Walmart carries budget options starting around $200 for full mattresses, while Target focuses on mid-range options from $400 to $900. These retailers often rotate inventory seasonally, so availability changes throughout the year. Online ordering with in-store or curbside pickup means you can reserve a mattress before visiting.

Warehouse and big-box retailers typically offer limited customization compared to furniture stores. You choose from available stock models rather than special ordering specific options. However, return policies are often generous—many offer 60 to 120 days to return a mattress if you're unsatisfied, longer than traditional furniture stores. Delivery options vary by location and retailer, with some offering free delivery for purchases over certain amounts.

Price advantages at these venues come from high-volume purchasing and direct manufacturer relationships. A mattress that costs $700 at a furniture store might be priced at $550 at Costco. However, selection is more limited, and you may need to act relatively quickly if you find a model you like, as popular items can sell out. Practical takeaway: Check warehouse club and big-box retailer websites for current full mattress inventory and prices in your area, and consider warehouse membership costs against potential savings on your purchase.

Finding Used and Discounted Mattresses Locally

Used mattresses represent a significant cost savings opportunity, though they require careful evaluation. Mattresses sold at consignment stores, thrift shops, and used furniture retailers typically cost 40 to 60 percent less than new equivalent models. A used memory foam mattress that might sell for $800 new could be available for $400 to $500 used. However, you cannot verify how the mattress was used, whether it was exposed to moisture, pests, or allergens, or how much of its lifespan remains.

Online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and OfferUp connect you with local sellers who have mattresses available. Search your city name plus "full mattress" to see local listings. Prices vary widely based on mattress age, brand, and condition, ranging from $50 to $500 for used full mattresses. This approach allows direct communication with sellers and often negotiation room on price. However, buyer protections are limited, and you should inspect mattresses in person before purchasing and arrange your own transportation.

Estate sales, moving sales, and garage sales often include full mattresses priced to move quickly. Websites like EstateSales.net list upcoming sales by location and let you preview items. Auctions—both in-person and online through services like Bid4Assets or local auction houses—can yield significant discounts on mattresses. Police and government surplus auctions sometimes include mattresses from seized property or surplus equipment.

When buying used mattresses, inspect the mattress surface for stains, discoloration, odors, and visible damage. Ask the seller about the mattress history—how old is it, has anyone smoked around it, and has it been stored in clean conditions. Consider whether buying a used mattress is appropriate for your situation, as health considerations make some people prefer new mattresses. Practical takeaway: If considering a used mattress, set a target price, inspect it thoroughly in person, ask detailed questions about its history, and plan for professional cleaning or use a protective mattress cover immediately after purchase.

Investigating Mattress Specialty Stores and Direct Manufacturers

Mattress specialty retailers focus exclusively on beds and related sleep products, offering deeper selection and staff knowledge than general furniture stores. Chains like Sleep Number, Mattress Firm, and Sleepy's maintain locations throughout the United States. Sleep Number specializes in airbeds with adjustable firmness settings and fills numerous showrooms nationwide. Mattress Firm operates over 2,000 locations and carries multiple brands including Sealy, Simmons, Beautyrest, and their own Serta brand. These specialty stores employ sleep consultants trained to ask about your sleep position, health considerations, and preferences.
