Free Guide to Finding and Choosing a Doctor

Understanding Your Healthcare Needs and Doctor Types

Before searching for a doctor, it helps to understand what type of medical care you need. Different doctors specialize in different areas of health. Primary care physicians are usually your first stop—they handle general health concerns, manage chronic conditions, and refer you to specialists when needed. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, primary care doctors provide roughly 90% of all medical care in the United States.

Primary care doctors include family medicine physicians, internists, and general practitioners. These doctors typically handle conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, infections, and routine check-ups. If you need specialized care—for example, treatment for heart disease or joint problems—your primary care doctor will refer you to a cardiologist, orthopedic surgeon, or other specialist.

Other common doctor types include pediatricians (for children), obstetricians/gynecologists (for women's health), psychiatrists (for mental health), and dermatologists (for skin conditions). Understanding which type of doctor treats your specific health needs is an important first step. Many people find it helpful to start with a primary care physician who knows their full medical history and can coordinate their overall care.

You may also encounter nurse practitioners and physician assistants in medical offices. These professionals can often provide many of the same services as doctors and are regulated by state licensing boards. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are among the fastest-growing professions in healthcare.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your main health concerns and note whether you need primary care (general health) or specialist care (focused on a specific condition or body system). This will guide your search.

Using Insurance and Network Information to Find Doctors

If you have health insurance, your insurance company maintains a network of doctors and hospitals. Using in-network providers typically costs you less money because your insurance has already negotiated rates with these doctors. Most insurance plans cover out-of-network care but at a higher cost to you. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reports that understanding your insurance network is one of the most important steps in choosing a doctor.

To find doctors in your insurance network, start with your insurance card or member handbook. Most insurance companies provide online directories where you can search by location, specialty, and name. You can also call your insurance company's customer service line—the number is usually on the back of your card. When you call, explain what type of doctor you need and your location, and a representative can provide names of available doctors.

When using your insurance directory, note important details: whether the doctor is accepting new patients, what office locations they work at, and whether they work with any hospitals in your area. Some doctors only accept certain insurance plans, so verify that your specific plan is accepted before scheduling an appointment. If you don't have insurance, this step doesn't apply, but you may still want to ask doctors about their costs and payment plans.

If you're on Medicare, the official Medicare.gov website has a "Care Provider Search" tool that shows doctors, hospitals, and other facilities that accept Medicare. For Medicaid, each state runs its own program with its own network of doctors, so you'll need to check your state's Medicaid website or handbook for provider lists.

Practical Takeaway: Log into your insurance company's website or call the number on your insurance card to get a current list of doctors in your network in your area. Save this list for reference.

Researching Doctor Credentials, Background, and Patient Reviews

Once you have a list of potential doctors, research their background and credentials. A doctor's medical degree (MD or DO) should be from an accredited medical school. Board certification means a doctor has completed training in their specialty and passed an exam proving their knowledge. The American Board of Medical Specialties maintains a database where you can verify whether a doctor is board-certified in their field. Most hospitals and large medical practices display credentials in the office or on their website.

You can also check whether a doctor has any disciplinary history through your state's medical board. Each state maintains a public database of licensed physicians. You can search your state's medical board website (often called the "State Medical Board" or "Department of Medical Licensure") to see if a doctor has faced complaints, settlements, or license restrictions. The Federation of State Medical Boards offers links to all state medical boards on their website. While not all complaints indicate poor care, this information is important context.

Patient reviews offer another perspective on a doctor's practice. Websites like Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, and Google Reviews collect patient ratings and written feedback. According to research from the American Journal of Managed Care, patient reviews generally correlate with measures of actual quality care. However, remember that reviews are subjective—one person's experience may differ from another's. Look for patterns across multiple reviews rather than focusing on a single comment. A doctor with 50 reviews averaging 4.2 stars is likely more representative of actual experience than one with 3 reviews.

When reading reviews, pay attention to specific details: Was the appointment on time? Was the doctor listening and thorough? Did office staff communicate clearly about costs? Were appointment wait times reasonable? These practical details often matter more to patients than broad statements about quality.

Practical Takeaway: For each doctor you're considering, spend 10 minutes checking their board certification status on your state's medical board website and reading reviews on two different websites to get a balanced picture.

Evaluating Location, Office Hours, and Accessibility

Practical considerations matter significantly when choosing a doctor. A doctor's location affects whether you can actually get to appointments—especially important if you don't drive, take public transportation, or live in a rural area. Research found in the Journal of Primary Care & Community Health shows that travel time to medical appointments is a major reason people miss or delay care. Ideally, your doctor's office should be reasonably close to your home or workplace, or on a bus line you use regularly.

Office hours also matter. If you work during standard business hours, you need a doctor who offers evening or Saturday appointments. Many practices now offer extended hours, telehealth visits (virtual appointments by video or phone), or weekend availability. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth visits increased dramatically—the CDC reported that telehealth use jumped from 1% to 46% of outpatient visits in some practices. Many doctors continue offering virtual visits, which can be convenient if you have mobility challenges, live far away, or need quick access to care.

Ask whether the practice has wheelchair access, accessible parking, and facilities for people with disabilities if these are relevant to you. Find out whether appointments can be scheduled online or only by phone. Some practices have long wait times to get an appointment (sometimes weeks or months), while others can see you within days. Call the office directly and ask: "How long does it typically take to get a new patient appointment?" A reasonable answer is usually within 2-4 weeks for routine care, though urgent care needs should be seen faster.

Parking is another overlooked but important factor. If the office is in a busy urban area or hospital setting, free parking may not be available. If parking costs money or is difficult to find, this adds time and expense to each visit. Ask about these practical details before committing to a new doctor.

Practical Takeaway: Visit the doctor's office location on Google Maps to see the neighborhood, parking situation, and nearby public transportation. Then call to ask about wait times for appointments and what visit options (in-person, phone, video) they offer.

Assessing Communication Style and Your Comfort Level

Your relationship with your doctor matters for your health. Research from JAMA Internal Medicine shows that patients who feel respected by their doctors and who understand their treatment recommendations have better health outcomes. When evaluating a potential doctor, consider whether their communication style works for you. Some people prefer a doctor who is warm and chatty; others want efficient, straightforward information. Neither approach is wrong—it's about what you prefer.

During your first appointment (sometimes called a "new patient visit"), pay attention to whether the doctor listens without interrupting, asks follow-up questions about your health concerns, and explains things in words you understand. Do they use medical jargon you can't follow, or do they explain conditions and treatment options clearly? A good doctor should ask about your daily life, work, and any stress you're experiencing—these factors affect health. They should also ask what your health goals are rather than assuming they know what matters to you.
