Understanding AARP Tax-Aide: What This Program Offers

AARP Tax-Aide is a volunteer-run program that provides tax return preparation services to people with low to moderate incomes, with particular focus on taxpayers age 60 and older. The program has been operating since 1969, making it one of the longest-running volunteer tax preparation programs in the United States. Each year, AARP Tax-Aide volunteers prepare more than 2 million individual tax returns across all 50 states, Washington D.C., and U.S. territories.

The program operates through a network of thousands of volunteers who receive training and certification from the Internal Revenue Service. These volunteers work at community centers, libraries, senior centers, and other local sites to help people prepare their federal and state tax returns at no cost. The volunteers themselves are not tax professionals employed by AARP; rather, they are community members who have completed IRS training and maintain certification through annual continuing education requirements.

Tax-Aide services cover preparation of 1040 forms along with standard schedules and attachments. The program can handle situations including Social Security income, pensions, retirement distributions, investment income, and certain credits and deductions. However, the program has limitations and cannot prepare returns for people with complex tax situations, such as those who are self-employed with significant business income, have substantial rental property income, or require tax planning advice.

A significant number of older adults leave money on the table each year by not claiming tax credits they are entitled to claim. The Earned Income Tax Credit, for example, is claimed by only about 75 percent of eligible filers. The Additional Child Tax Credit is similarly underutilized. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are trained to identify these credits and help people claim them properly.

Practical Takeaway: AARP Tax-Aide is a legitimate, long-established program funded by AARP and supported by IRS training standards. Understanding what the program does and does not cover helps you determine whether it might be a useful resource for your tax preparation needs.

Locating Tax-Aide Sites Near You

Finding a Tax-Aide location requires you to search through AARP's site locator tool, which is available on the AARP website. The locator allows you to enter your zip code or city and state to see which sites operate in your area. Tax-Aide sites typically operate during tax season, which generally runs from early February through mid-April, though some sites may open earlier or close later depending on local demand.

Site locations vary significantly by geography. Urban areas typically have more sites and longer hours of operation compared to rural areas. According to AARP data, approximately 5,000 Tax-Aide sites operate nationally during tax season. However, the specific number of sites available in any given year can fluctuate based on volunteer availability and community demand. Some areas may have multiple sites within a few miles of each other, while rural communities might have only one or two sites serving a larger region.

Sites are hosted by various organizations and agencies within local communities. Common host locations include public libraries, senior centers, community action agencies, housing authorities, and nonprofit organizations. Libraries are particularly common hosts, with many public library systems partnering with AARP Tax-Aide to provide the service. Some sites also operate at housing facilities specifically designed for older adults.

When you find a site near you, the locator tool typically shows the address, phone number, and hours of operation. Many sites also list information about what documentation you should bring and whether appointments are required or if services are offered on a walk-in basis. Some sites have seen high demand in recent years, which has led many to move toward appointment-based systems rather than walk-in availability.

The search tool on AARP's website is updated regularly during tax season. If the tool does not show sites in your immediate area, expanding your search radius by checking nearby towns or cities may reveal options within reasonable driving distance. Alternatively, calling the main AARP Tax-Aide number can connect you with information about sites in your region.

Practical Takeaway: Begin your search early in tax season—ideally in late January or early February—to understand what options exist in your area and whether you need to make an appointment.

Information You Will Need to Bring

Tax-Aide volunteers will ask you to bring certain documents and information to your appointment or visit. Having these materials organized and ready makes the process smoother and faster. The specific items you need depend on your individual tax situation, but there are core documents that virtually everyone needs.

You should bring your Social Security card or a document showing your Social Security number for yourself, your spouse if filing jointly, and any dependents you are claiming. You will also need documentation of your identity, such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID card. For your spouse, similar identification and Social Security verification are necessary.

Tax documents from employers, financial institutions, and government agencies include W-2 forms from any jobs you held during the year, 1099 forms reporting other income such as interest, dividends, or distributions from retirement accounts, and 1098 forms if you paid mortgage interest or student loan interest. Social Security statements showing the amount of benefits you received are essential for beneficiaries. If you received any unemployment benefits, you will have a 1099-G form documenting this.

If you are claiming dependent children or other dependents, bring documentation of their Social Security numbers and birthdates. Any documents related to changes in your household status, such as marriage or divorce papers, can be useful information for the volunteer preparing your return. If you are claiming a dependent who is not a biological child, you may need to provide documentation of your relationship.

Documentation related to deductions and credits depends on your situation. If you paid property taxes, bring records showing the amount paid. If you made charitable contributions, having receipts or bank statements documenting these contributions helps. Records of medical and dental expenses, if you itemize deductions, should be available. If you are claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Child Tax Credit, having documentation of income and dependent information organized is helpful.

If you paid taxes during the year through estimated tax payments or had taxes withheld from retirement distributions, bring documentation of these payments. If you had significant business expenses, medical expenses, or other deductible items, bring organized records. The volunteer will guide you about what specific documentation they need to complete your return accurately.

Practical Takeaway: Organize your documents by category—income documents in one folder, deduction records in another—before your appointment so the volunteer can work efficiently through your information.

Understanding Program Limitations and What Cannot Be Prepared

While AARP Tax-Aide can handle many common tax situations, the program explicitly cannot prepare certain types of returns or handle complex situations. Understanding these limitations helps you determine whether Tax-Aide is appropriate for your needs or whether you should seek other resources.

The program cannot prepare returns for self-employed individuals or those with business income above certain thresholds. If you operate a business, practice a profession, or are involved in significant business activity that generates income, Tax-Aide is not designed to handle the accounting complexities and tax forms required for business taxation. This includes Schedule C filings and business-related deductions and depreciation.

Tax-Aide volunteers cannot handle returns involving substantial rental property income or complex real estate transactions. Rental income situations often involve depreciation calculations, passive activity loss limitations, and other specialized tax rules that fall outside the scope of the program's training.

Returns involving significant investment income and activities are also outside the program's scope. If you have substantial capital gains and losses from investment transactions, complex stock option situations, or significant trading activity, a Tax-Aide volunteer will likely refer you to other resources.

The program cannot prepare returns for people involved in international tax situations, including foreign earned income, foreign tax credits, or complex worldwide income reporting. Similarly, returns involving certain specialized credits, alternative minimum tax calculations, or other advanced tax situations are beyond the program's scope.

Tax-Aide volunteers are not permitted to provide tax planning advice, represent clients before the IRS, or provide ongoing tax consultation. The program focuses specifically on accurate return preparation for the current tax year. If you need advice about estimated tax payments for the coming year, tax strategy, or representation in an IRS matter, you would need to consult with a tax professional or the IRS directly.
