Free Guide to Factory Resetting Windows 10

What Factory Reset Means and Why You Might Need One

A factory reset returns your Windows 10 computer to the state it was in when it first left the manufacturer. This process removes all personal files, installed programs, and custom settings you've added since you started using the computer. Think of it like returning your house to the way it looked on move-in day—all your furniture and belongings are gone, but the basic structure remains.

Windows 10 offers a built-in reset feature that doesn't require third-party software or technical expertise. According to Microsoft, factory resets solve performance problems in approximately 60% of cases where users experience significant slowdowns or freezing. The reset process works by removing corrupted files, leftover program remnants, and accumulated digital clutter that can interfere with normal operation.

People choose to factory reset their computers for several reasons. Your computer might run slowly after months or years of use due to accumulated temporary files and registry issues. Malware or virus infections sometimes require a complete reset when antivirus software cannot fully remove threats. If you're planning to sell or give away your computer, a factory reset ensures your personal data won't remain on the device. Some users perform resets when transferring to a new computer, as a fresh Windows installation often resolves compatibility problems with older hardware or software.

Before resetting, understand what will happen: Windows 10 will reinstall itself, removing everything you've installed and stored. Your documents, photos, videos, and any programs you downloaded will disappear unless you back them up first. However, if you use OneDrive or cloud storage services, files saved to those locations remain accessible after the reset.

Takeaway: A factory reset completely clears your computer and reinstalls Windows 10, making it useful for fixing performance problems or preparing a computer for a new user. Know that this process removes all personal files and programs, so backing up important data beforehand is essential.

Preparing Your Computer Before Starting the Reset

Preparation determines whether a factory reset goes smoothly or causes you to lose important files. The most critical step is backing up your data. Start by identifying what matters: documents, photos, videos, music, email folders, and any files you've created or downloaded. You have several backup options. External hard drives offer high storage capacity for large file collections—a 1-terabyte external drive costs between $50 and $100 and holds approximately 250,000 photos or 500 hours of video. Cloud services like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox provide remote backups that remain accessible anywhere with internet access.

Create a complete backup by using Windows 10's built-in backup tools. Open Settings, select System, then choose About and Advanced System Settings. Look for the Backup option, which allows you to select folders and create system images. Alternatively, connect an external drive and use File Explorer to manually copy important folders. For email accounts like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo, export your messages and contacts before resetting. In most email programs, you'll find an Export or Download option in settings that creates files you can save to your external drive.

Document important information you'll need after reset. Write down your Windows 10 product key if you have one—this appears in your email confirmation if you purchased Windows 10 online. Record your WiFi password, email addresses, and login credentials for frequently used services. Take screenshots of any custom settings, desktop arrangements, or bookmarked websites you want to remember.

Unplug external devices except for a keyboard and mouse. Disconnect printers, scanners, USB drives, and other peripherals before beginning the reset. This prevents Windows from getting confused during installation and ensures the reset focuses only on your internal system drive.

Ensure your computer is plugged into power. A factory reset typically takes 20 to 45 minutes depending on your drive speed and Windows 10 version. Your computer will restart multiple times during this process. If your battery drains during a reset, the installation may fail, requiring you to start over.

Takeaway: Back up all personal files to an external drive or cloud storage, document important passwords and settings, disconnect external devices, and plug your computer into power before resetting.

Two Methods for Resetting Windows 10

Windows 10 provides two reset options: keeping your files or removing everything. The "Keep My Files" option reinstalls Windows 10 while preserving your personal documents, photos, and media files. This method takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and removes only installed programs and system settings. It suits situations where you want a fresh Windows installation but don't want to lose your documents. However, files saved in program folders may be deleted, so it's not a complete data preservation option.

The "Remove Everything" option performs a complete factory reset, deleting all files and programs. This method takes 30 to 45 minutes and returns your computer to its original condition. Choose this option if you're selling your computer, giving it away, or dealing with severe malware. Microsoft reports that the "Remove Everything" option is more effective at eliminating security threats because it wipes the entire drive and reinstalls Windows from scratch.

To access Windows 10's reset feature, open Settings by pressing the Windows key and typing "Settings." Select the Settings app, then click System. In the left menu, choose About, then scroll down and click "Reset this PC" under the Reset your PC section. Windows will display your two options with descriptions. Click "Get Started" to begin. Windows will ask which option you prefer and prompt you to confirm.

If your computer won't start normally, you can still reset it. Restart your computer and hold the Shift key while clicking the power icon to shut down. Turn the computer back on and hold the F11 key (or F12 on some computers) repeatedly as it starts. This accesses the Windows Recovery Environment, where you'll find reset options even if normal startup fails.

During the reset process, your screen may appear blank or show a spinning loading indicator for extended periods. This is normal. Don't turn off your computer or press any keys. The reset continues in the background. After completion, your computer will restart and display the Windows setup screen, just as it would on a brand-new computer.

Takeaway: Windows 10 offers two reset paths: keeping files or removing everything. Access resets through Settings or the recovery environment if normal startup fails. Allow 20 to 45 minutes and keep your computer plugged in throughout the process.

What Happens During and After the Reset Process

The factory reset follows predictable stages. First, Windows removes all installed programs and collects your files (if you chose "Keep My Files"). This stage typically shows a progress bar and takes 5 to 10 minutes. Your screen may go black several times as Windows restarts the system.

Next, Windows 10 reinstalls itself. This stage involves downloading and installing system files—the core of Windows. Your computer will restart multiple times, which is expected behavior. Each restart moves through different setup phases. You might see percentage completion indicators or status messages. This stage usually takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on your internet speed and drive performance.

After installation completes, your computer enters the setup phase. You'll see the Windows welcome screen and be prompted to accept the license agreement. Choose your region, keyboard layout, and language preferences. Connect to your WiFi network by selecting your network name and entering your password. Windows will check for updates—this may take several minutes.

Create or sign in with a user account. You can use a Microsoft account (connected to Outlook, Hotmail, or Live) or create a local account using just a username and password. A Microsoft account syncs settings, apps, and OneDrive files across devices. A local account offers more privacy but won't sync content.

During setup, Windows offers to restore your files if you chose "Keep My Files." This process recovers your documents and media to their original locations. Take time to verify files are present after completion. Check your Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Downloads folders. Look for your OneDrive folder if you use cloud storage.

Finally, Windows installs drivers for your hardware like graphics cards, network adapters, and audio equipment. This stage runs automatically in the background and may take 30 minutes to an hour to complete. You'll notice Windows Update notifications appearing as it patches security vulnerabilities. Allow these updates to install fully.

Takeaway: Expect your computer to restart multiple times during reset. After completion, you'll set up Windows as
