Staff members may ask how many items you are donating and may glance through to verify they meet standards. Some stores provide receipts for your donation, which can be useful if you want to claim a deduction on your taxes. Preparing Clothing Donations: Quality Standards and Guidelines

Preparing women's clothing for donation involves basic quality checks that respect the organizations receiving your items and the people who will wear them. Donations that meet quality standards are more likely to be accepted and resold, which means they actually help people in the community. Poor-quality donations create work for nonprofits sorting through unusable items, so taking time to prepare your donations properly is part of the giving process.

Start by washing or dry-cleaning items before donating them. Most organizations expect clothing to be clean. If you have worn an item and it needs washing, wash it. If an item requires dry-cleaning, either dry-clean it or donate items to organizations that specifically state they accept unwashed donations. Inspecting for stains, odors, and damage is the next step. Shine a light into underarms and necklines where stains are common. Smell the items, especially if they have been stored in damp basements or closets with smoke. If you cannot remove odors, the item is not ready to donate.

Check zippers, buttons, and seams. Zippers should open and close smoothly. Missing or loose buttons should be repaired or items should be donated to organizations that do repairs. Seams should be intact—small holes in seams or under arms disqualify items. Hems that are coming down can sometimes be resewn, so some organizations may accept these, but asking first is helpful. Fabric should not be pilled, excessively faded, or worn thin. If you would hesitate to wear the item yourself, it probably is not ready for donation.

For seasonal items, consider timing your donations. Winter coats, sweaters, and long sleeves are most needed in fall and early winter. Summer dresses, lightweight shirts, and sandals are most useful in spring and summer. However, thrift stores accept items year-round and inventory them for the season when they are needed. Size variation is helpful—organizations serve people of all sizes, and donations in a range of sizes are more useful than donations in only one size.

Organize your donation. If bringing items in bags, use sturdy bags that won't tear. If using boxes, ensure they are not falling apart. Folding items neatly shows respect for the receiving organization's time. Making a list of what you are donating can help if the organization offers receipts. This documentation is useful for tax purposes and helps you remember what you gave away.

Practical takeaway: Before packing anything to donate, ask yourself: Is this clean? Does it have stains or smell? Are all zippers and buttons working? Is the fabric intact? Only pack items that pass these checks.
