Free Guide to DIY Princess Cruise Luggage Tags

Understanding Princess Cruise Luggage Tag Basics

Princess Cruises is one of the largest cruise lines in the world, operating over 15 ships that travel to destinations across the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, and beyond. When you book a cruise with Princess, the cruise line provides official luggage tags as part of your cruise package, but many cruisers find that creating personalized DIY tags offers practical advantages. Luggage tags serve a critical function during the cruise embarkation process — they identify your bags and direct them to your assigned cabin automatically through the cruise terminal's baggage handling system.

Official Princess luggage tags are typically color-coded and include a barcode system that connects to your booking information. However, creating your own tags using materials you already have at home can be a cost-saving approach while still maintaining the necessary identification information. DIY tags can be made from cardstock, laminated paper, or even sturdy plastic, and they can be customized to match your travel style or make your luggage easier to spot on the ship.

The key information that must appear on any luggage tag includes your cabin number, last name, ship name, and embarkation date. This information ensures that if your bags become separated from you during travel or port transfers, cruise staff can reunite them with you efficiently. Understanding what information is required and how baggage handling works on Princess ships forms the foundation for creating effective DIY tags.

Practical Takeaway: Before creating DIY tags, review your Princess cruise documents to locate your cabin number, ship name, and travel dates. Write this information down — these details are essential for every luggage tag you make.

Materials and Tools You'll Need at Home

Creating DIY Princess cruise luggage tags requires only basic materials that most households already contain. The most straightforward option is cardstock or heavy-weight printer paper, which provides a sturdy surface that holds up well during handling. Standard printer paper is too thin and can tear easily when tags are attached to luggage and dragged through terminals, so using cardstock or cover-weight paper is recommended. A typical ream of cardstock costs between $3 and $8 at office supply stores and can produce dozens of tags.

You'll need a way to cut your tags into uniform shapes and sizes. A paper cutter or craft knife works well, though scissors can suffice if you're willing to spend extra time on cutting. For a professional appearance and added durability, consider using a laminating machine or laminating sheets. A basic home laminator costs $15 to $30 and uses small plastic pouches that are inexpensive. Lamination protects your tags from water damage, fading, and wear — important since tags may be exposed to weather during loading and unloading processes.

Adhesive options include reinforced luggage tag straps with plastic sleeves, which are sold at travel stores and online retailers for $5 to $15 per pack. Alternatively, you can use clear plastic sleeves designed for ID badges, combined with hole punches and zip ties or string. Waterproof markers or a printer with permanent ink work for writing information. If you're using printed tags, standard black ink is acceptable, though darker inks are more visible from a distance.

The total cost for materials to make multiple luggage tags typically ranges from $5 to $25, depending on whether you already own items like a paper cutter, laminator, or hole punch. Compare this to purchasing pre-made cruise luggage tags online, which often cost $8 to $15 per tag.

Practical Takeaway: Inventory what you have at home before purchasing supplies. Most people already own scissors, a printer, and cardstock or construction paper. Laminating sheets or sleeves are the most valuable optional purchase for durability.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Creating Your Tags

Begin by determining the size of your tags. Standard luggage tag dimensions are approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, though you can adjust these proportions based on your preference. This size is large enough to be clearly visible and read from a distance, but small enough to not overwhelm your luggage. Sketch your tag shape on cardstock or design it on your computer before cutting multiple copies.

If creating tags by hand, draw your shape lightly in pencil first, then cut it out carefully using a paper cutter for straight edges. For computer-designed tags, create a template in any word processor or design software. Include space for: your name (last name prominently displayed), cabin number, ship name, and embarkation date. Leave a one-inch margin around all edges for reinforcement and attachment. Set your font size to at least 16 points for the cabin number — this is the most critical information for baggage sorting.

Write or print your information on each tag. If printing, use dark ink that will be visible even if the tag gets wet or soiled. If writing by hand, use waterproof permanent markers. Double-check that all information is accurate and legible. Misspelled names or incorrect cabin numbers can cause baggage misrouting.

Next, reinforce the area where you'll attach the tag to your luggage. This is typically a corner or edge of the tag. You can punch a hole with a standard hole punch or craft punch, or use reinforcement stickers around the hole to prevent tearing. If using laminating sheets, laminate your tags before punching holes — this protects the laminate edges and maintains waterproofing around the attachment point.

Finally, attach your tag securely to your luggage using your chosen method. Zip ties are particularly durable for cruise travel, as they won't slip off like string might. If using a luggage tag strap, thread it through your punched hole and loop it around a luggage handle. Test the attachment by gently tugging — the tag should not move or rotate.

Practical Takeaway: Create a template for your first tag, then use it to trace or duplicate your remaining tags for consistency. This saves time and ensures all tags display information uniformly and clearly.

Design Elements That Improve Luggage Identification

While the required information is functional, thoughtful design choices make your luggage significantly easier to identify on the ship and at ports. Color coordination is one of the most effective strategies. If you're creating multiple tags for multiple bags, use different background colors for each bag. For example, you might use blue cardstock for your large suitcase, green for your carry-on, and yellow for a smaller duffel. This color-coding system allows you to quickly locate your specific bags among hundreds of similar-looking luggage pieces in ship corridors, at muster stations, or during port embarkation.

Typography and contrast matter significantly. Use large, bold fonts that remain readable even at a distance or in poor lighting conditions. Dark text on light backgrounds is most legible — black or dark blue text on white, light blue, or light yellow backgrounds provides strong contrast. Avoid light text on dark backgrounds, which is harder to read from far away.

Consider adding a personal symbol or pattern that makes your luggage distinctive. This might be a small drawing, a particular icon, or a distinctive border design. Some cruisers use decorative tape, stickers, or markers to create a visual pattern on their tag that makes their bags instantly recognizable. This is particularly valuable if traveling with family members who have similarly-sized or similarly-colored luggage.

Include an emergency contact phone number or email address on the back of your tag, in case your luggage becomes lost. This secondary information could be the difference between a permanent loss and a recovered bag. Many cruisers also note any luggage tracking information, such as "Bag 1 of 3" or "Large Blue Suitcase," which helps if multiple bags become separated.

Waterproof materials and lamination directly impact how professional your tags appear after use. Even tags that remain dry often appear worn after handling, so investing in laminated or plastic-sleeved tags preserves their appearance throughout your cruise.

Practical Takeaway: If traveling with family or friends, use distinctly different colored tags for each person's luggage. If traveling alone with multiple bags, use different colors for each bag and label each one "Bag 1 of 2" or similar notation.
