Disney Plus launched in November 2019 and focuses primarily on family-friendly content. The service includes movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and Lucasfilm. As of 2024, Disney Plus has grown to over 150 million subscribers worldwide. The platform emphasizes content that appeals to multiple age groups, from young children through adults.

Hulu operates as a general entertainment streaming service that has been around since 2008, making it older than Disney Plus. Hulu's library includes thousands of TV shows, movies, and original series. The service is known for offering current television episodes from major networks, often available the day after they air on television. Hulu also produces original content like "The Handmaid's Tale," "Only Murders in the Building," and "The Bear."

Both platforms operate on subscription models, meaning you pay a monthly or annual fee to access their content. Neither service requires long-term contracts—you can cancel anytime. The services use algorithms to recommend content based on your viewing history, though you can also browse by category, search for specific titles, or explore curated collections.

Key differences between the platforms include their content focus, user interface design, and available features. Disney Plus emphasizes visual quality and family-appropriate material, while Hulu offers more mature content and a broader range of television programming. Both services allow multiple user profiles on a single account, which means different household members can have personalized recommendations and watch histories.

Takeaway: Disney Plus and Hulu serve different entertainment needs—Disney Plus for family and franchise content, Hulu for general television and entertainment. Knowing what each platform offers helps determine which subscriptions align with your viewing preferences.

Pricing Options and Subscription Plans Available

Disney Plus offers several subscription tiers with different pricing and features. As of 2024, the Basic plan costs approximately $7.99 per month and includes standard video quality (up to 1080p on compatible devices). The Standard plan is priced around $10.99 per month and offers better video quality (up to 4K on compatible devices). A Premium plan launched at approximately $13.99 per month with enhanced features and higher resolution options.

Annual subscription options are also available for Disney Plus. Paying annually typically costs less than paying monthly for twelve months combined, providing savings for those who plan to maintain their subscriptions year-round. For example, an annual Disney Plus subscription might cost around $79.99, compared to $95.88 if paying monthly for the same period.

Hulu's pricing structure is similarly tiered. The Basic plan with advertisements costs approximately $7.99 per month, making it the most affordable option. The ad-free Premium plan is priced around $14.99 per month for uninterrupted viewing. Hulu also offers annual payment options that provide cost savings compared to monthly payments. Hulu's Live TV add-on is available as an additional service, costing approximately $89.99 per month and providing access to live television broadcasts and on-demand content.

Many people choose bundle options that combine Disney Plus and Hulu at a discounted rate compared to subscribing to each separately. Disney offers the "Disney Bundle" which includes Disney Plus, Hulu (with ads), and ESPN Plus for approximately $14.99 per month. Additional plans combine ad-free Hulu with these services at higher price points. These bundles represent the most cost-effective way to access multiple Disney streaming services.

Pricing does change periodically as streaming services adjust their business models and add new features. It's worth checking the official Disney Plus and Hulu websites directly to see current pricing in your region, as rates may vary by location and promotional offers may be available during certain periods.

Takeaway: Disney Plus and Hulu each offer multiple pricing tiers ranging from approximately $7.99 to $14.99 monthly, with annual options and bundle deals providing potential savings. Comparing plans based on your budget and desired features helps identify the most cost-effective option.

Content Libraries and What You Can Watch

Disney Plus's content library emphasizes entertainment franchises and family programming. The platform includes complete libraries of Disney animated films spanning decades, from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937) to recent releases like "Moana 2" (2024). Marvel Cinematic Universe films are available on the platform, including all Avengers movies, Spider-Man films, and Doctor Strange entries. Star Wars content includes the original trilogy, prequel trilogy, sequel trilogy, and series like "The Mandalorian," "Ahsoka," and "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

Pixar films on Disney Plus include "Toy Story," "Inside Out," "Coco," and "Soul." National Geographic content provides documentaries and educational programming covering nature, science, and history. The platform also offers original series like "Loki," "Andor," "She-Hulk," and numerous other Marvel series that are exclusive to Disney Plus subscribers.

Hulu's content library is significantly larger in terms of variety and volume. The platform offers thousands of television episodes from networks including ABC, NBC, Fox, and many cable channels. Shows span genres from dramas and comedies to reality television and documentaries. Hulu is known for making current television episodes available shortly after they air on broadcast television, sometimes the very next day, which appeals to viewers who want to watch current shows without cable subscriptions.

Original Hulu content has gained recognition in the entertainment industry. "The Handmaid's Tale" has won multiple Emmy Awards. "Only Murders in the Building" features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. "The Bear," set in a Chicago restaurant, received critical acclaim and numerous award nominations. Other popular originals include "Severance," "Shogun," and "The Dropout."

Hulu's movie library includes films from various studios and time periods, ranging from classic Hollywood films to recent theatrical releases. The library is curated from major film studios and continues to rotate content based on licensing agreements. Reality television is particularly robust on Hulu, with numerous shows focused on lifestyle, competition, and documentary-style programming.

Takeaway: Disney Plus specializes in family-friendly franchise content (Disney, Marvel, Star Wars), while Hulu offers diverse television programming including current shows and critically acclaimed originals. Your content preferences determine which library better matches your viewing interests.

Technical Features and Device Compatibility

Both Disney Plus and Hulu operate across multiple device types, allowing you to watch on televisions, computers, tablets, and smartphones. Disney Plus's app is available on major platforms including iOS, Android, Amazon Fire devices, Roku, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and smart televisions from manufacturers like Samsung, LG, and Vizio. Hulu maintains similar device compatibility, with apps available on iOS, Android, Fire tablets, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, gaming consoles (PlayStation and Xbox), and smart television platforms. The Hulu website allows viewing on computers through most web browsers. This broad device support means you can start watching on one device and continue on another without losing your place in a show or movie.

Video quality options differ between the subscription tiers on both platforms. Disney Plus's Basic tier streams at 1080p (Full HD) resolution, while Standard and Premium tiers offer 4K Ultra HD on compatible devices with sufficient internet speeds. Hulu similarly offers standard definition on Basic plans and higher quality on Premium plans. The actual quality you experience depends on both your internet connection speed and your device's display capabilities.

Both services support simultaneous streaming on multiple devices depending on your subscription tier. Disney Plus Basic plans typically allow streaming on one device at a time, Standard plans allow two simultaneous streams, and Premium plans allow four concurrent streams. Hulu's plans have similar multi-device capabilities, with higher-tier subscriptions supporting more simultaneous streams. This means household members can watch different content on different screens simultaneously without interrupting each other.

Download features are available on both platforms, allowing you to save episodes and movies to your device for offline
