What Are Dental Implants and How Do They Work

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made from titanium that are surgically placed into your jawbone. They serve as a foundation for replacement teeth that look and function like natural teeth. Understanding what implants are and how they work is the first step in learning whether they might be a treatment option to explore with your dentist.

The implant itself is a small screw-like post that a dentist or oral surgeon places directly into the bone where a tooth is missing. Over several months, the bone grows around and bonds with the implant through a process called osseointegration. This biological bonding creates a strong, stable foundation—much stronger than what bridges or dentures can provide. Once the implant has fully integrated with the bone, a dentist attaches an abutment (a connector piece) to the top of the implant, and then places a crown (artificial tooth) on the abutment.

Dental implants differ from other tooth replacement options in several key ways. Unlike bridges, which require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth, implants stand alone and do not affect nearby teeth. Unlike dentures, which sit on top of the gums and can shift or slip, implants are anchored directly in the bone and remain stable during eating and speaking. A single implant can replace one tooth, or multiple implants can support a bridge or denture for people missing several or all teeth.

The success rate for dental implants is high. Research shows that implants have a success rate of 95-98% when placed by trained professionals and when patients follow proper aftercare instructions. This high success rate is one reason many people consider implants a reliable long-term solution for missing teeth.

Practical Takeaway: Dental implants are a surgical tooth replacement option that bonds with bone over time. They work differently than bridges and dentures, and may offer benefits like stability and preservation of healthy teeth. Discussing implants with your dentist can help you understand whether this option fits your situation.

The Dental Implant Treatment Process and Timeline

The journey to getting a dental implant involves several stages and typically takes several months from start to finish. Knowing what to expect during each phase helps you plan your time and prepare mentally and financially for the procedure.

The first stage is the consultation and planning phase. Your dentist or oral surgeon will examine your mouth, take X-rays, and may order a CT scan to assess the quality and amount of bone in your jaw. During this visit, the dental professional will discuss your medical history, current medications, and any health conditions that might affect treatment. They will explain the procedure, discuss the expected timeline, and talk about costs. This is also when they may recommend bone grafting if your jaw does not have enough bone to support an implant. The consultation phase typically takes one to two weeks.

The second stage is the implant placement surgery. The surgeon numbs the area with local anesthetic and makes a small incision in the gum to expose the bone. They then carefully drill a hole in the bone and insert the titanium implant post. The gum is then closed over the implant with stitches. This surgery usually takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on how many implants are being placed and the complexity of your case. Most people experience minimal discomfort during the procedure because of the anesthetic.

After implant placement, a healing period called osseointegration begins. This is when the bone grows around and bonds with the implant. This phase typically lasts three to six months, though it can take longer in some cases. During this time, you may receive a temporary tooth or denture so you can eat and speak normally. You will need to follow specific care instructions to protect the implant while it heals, such as avoiding hard or sticky foods and being gentle when cleaning the area.

Once osseointegration is complete, your dentist takes an impression or scan of the implant and surrounding teeth. This information is used to create a custom abutment and crown that match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth. The crown is then attached to the implant, usually in a simple office visit that takes an hour or less. Finally, your dentist may make adjustments to ensure the bite feels comfortable and the crown aligns properly with your other teeth.

Practical Takeaway: The implant process typically takes four to eight months from start to finish and includes consultation, surgery, healing time, and crown placement. Planning ahead for the timeline and costs involved helps you prepare for this multi-stage treatment.

Costs, Insurance, and Payment Options for Dental Implants

Dental implants involve significant out-of-pocket expenses for most people. Understanding the costs, how insurance may or may not cover them, and what payment options may be available is important for budgeting and planning your treatment.

The total cost of a single dental implant typically ranges from $3,000 to $6,000, though costs vary widely based on location, the complexity of your case, and the specific dental practice. This total usually includes the implant post, abutment, crown, and surgical placement. Additional procedures such as bone grafting or tooth extraction may add $500 to $3,000 to the total cost. In Duncan, Oklahoma, costs may be lower than in major urban areas, though they still represent a substantial investment for most households.

Dental insurance coverage for implants varies significantly. Some dental insurance plans do not cover implants at all, viewing them as an elective cosmetic procedure. Other plans cover a portion of the cost—often 50% of the implant after a deductible is met—but may limit coverage to one implant per tooth per lifetime. Some plans have annual maximums, which means they stop paying once you reach a certain dollar amount in benefits for the year. A few plans may cover only the crown portion of the implant, not the surgical placement. Before pursuing implants, contact your insurance provider to understand your specific coverage.

Many dental offices in Duncan offer payment plans or financing options that allow you to spread the cost over time. Common options include in-house payment plans where you pay your dentist directly in installments, and third-party financing through companies that specialize in dental lending. These financing options often include interest, so the total amount you pay will be higher than the upfront cost. Some dental schools also offer implant placement at reduced rates as part of their training programs, though the procedure may take longer.

When budgeting for implants, remember that costs do not end after placement. Once implants are in place, they require ongoing care and maintenance similar to natural teeth, including regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings. In some cases, implants may need repair or replacement years down the line, which could involve additional costs.

Practical Takeaway: Dental implants cost $3,000 to $6,000 per tooth in most areas. Insurance coverage varies widely, and payment plans through dental offices or third-party lenders may help make costs manageable. Request a detailed cost estimate from your dentist and verify your insurance coverage before proceeding.

Health Conditions and Factors That May Affect Implant Candidacy

Not everyone is equally suited for dental implants. Certain health conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors can affect how well an implant integrates and functions over time. Discussing your full medical history with your dentist helps determine whether implants are a reasonable option for you.

Bone health is one of the most important factors. Implants require sufficient bone volume and density in the jaw to support them. Conditions that reduce bone density—such as osteoporosis, long-term steroid use, or severe gum disease—may make implant placement more difficult or less successful. If bone loss is significant, bone grafting may be necessary to build up the jaw before implant placement. Your dentist can assess bone quality through X-rays and CT scans.

Gum disease is another significant factor. If you have active gum disease, implants are unlikely to succeed because the infection can spread to the implant site and prevent proper healing. Dentists typically recommend treating gum disease before pursuing implants. This may involve deep cleaning, antibiotics, or other treatments depending on the severity of your condition. Once gum disease is controlled, implant placement may become an option.

Certain medical conditions can affect implant success. Uncontrolled diabetes makes it harder for your body to heal from surgery and can increase infection risk. However, people with controlled diabetes often proceed successfully with implants. Cancer patients who have received radiation therapy to the head or neck may
