What Are Dental Implants and How Do They Work

A dental implant is a replacement tooth that looks and works like a natural tooth. The implant has three main parts: the post (which goes into your jawbone), the abutment (which connects the post to the crown), and the crown (the visible part that looks like a tooth).

The post is usually made of titanium, a metal that bonds well with bone. When a dentist places the post into your jawbone, your bone gradually grows around it over several months. This process is called osseointegration. Once the bone has grown around the post, it becomes very stable—almost as strong as a natural tooth root.

The abutment is a small connector piece that screws onto the post. It sticks above your gum line. The crown is then attached to the abutment. Your dentist can match the crown's color and shape to your other teeth so it looks natural.

Dental implants differ from other replacement options like bridges or dentures. A bridge requires grinding down nearby healthy teeth to support it. Dentures sit on top of your gums and can shift when you eat or talk. Implants stand alone and don't damage neighboring teeth. They also feel more like natural teeth when you chew and speak.

The implant process typically takes 3 to 6 months from start to finish because your bone needs time to heal around the post. During this waiting period, your dentist may give you a temporary tooth to wear.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding the basic structure and timeline of implants helps you know what to expect if you decide to explore this option further with a dental professional in Cottage Grove.

The Dental Implant Procedure: What Happens Step by Step

The dental implant procedure involves several stages. Here's what typically happens at each stage:

Stage One: Consultation and Planning

Your dentist will examine your mouth and take X-rays or 3D images to see how much bone you have in your jaw. They may also ask about your medical history because certain conditions can affect implant success. The dentist will discuss whether implants are right for you and what the costs might be. This is when you can ask questions about the procedure, recovery, and what to expect.

Stage Two: Tooth Extraction (if needed)

If you still have the damaged tooth, your dentist will remove it first. Your mouth will be numbed so you won't feel pain, though you may feel pressure. After extraction, your bone needs time to heal—usually 2 to 3 months—before the implant post can be placed.

Stage Three: Bone Grafting (if needed)

Some people don't have enough bone where the implant needs to go. In these cases, a dentist may do a bone graft. This means adding bone material to your jaw to build it up. The bone graft can come from your own body, a donor, or synthetic material. Bone grafts add time to the overall process but make implants possible for more people.

Stage Four: Implant Post Placement

Your dentist will numb your mouth and make a small opening in your gum where the implant post will go. They'll carefully place the titanium post into your jawbone. You may hear or feel vibration, but you shouldn't feel pain. The gum is then stitched closed. Healing takes 3 to 6 months while your bone grows around the post.

Stage Five: Abutment and Crown Placement

Once your bone has healed around the post, your dentist will place the abutment on top of it. Then they'll attach your crown. At this point, you have a complete replacement tooth.

Practical Takeaway: Knowing the step-by-step process reduces anxiety about what to expect and helps you plan your schedule around appointments and healing time.

Factors That Affect Cost

• Number of teeth: Replacing one tooth costs less than replacing multiple teeth. Some people get implant-supported bridges or dentures that replace several teeth on one or two implants.
• Bone grafting: If you need a bone graft before implant placement, this adds $500 to $3,000 or more to the total cost.
• Tooth extraction: If the damaged tooth still needs to be removed, this adds $75 to $300.
• Your dentist's experience: Dentists with more training or experience in implant placement may charge more.
• Type of crown material: A crown made of porcelain or ceramic typically costs more than other materials, but it looks more natural.
• Complications: If complications arise during healing, additional treatment may be needed.

Many dental offices in Cottage Grove offer payment plans that let you spread the cost over several months or years. Some plans have no interest if you pay within a certain timeframe. Others offer financing through third-party companies.

Some dental insurance plans cover a portion of implant costs, typically 10% to 50%. However, many plans don't cover implants at all because they're considered cosmetic. It's worth checking your insurance plan details or calling your insurance company to ask what's covered.

A few charitable organizations and dental schools offer reduced-cost implants. Dental schools train students under the supervision of experienced instructors. The procedure takes longer because students work carefully under supervision, but the cost is often much lower—sometimes 40% to 60% less than standard dental offices.

Practical Takeaway: Call several dental offices in Cottage Grove to ask about their implant costs and payment options. Ask if they offer discounts for paying upfront or if they work with financing companies.

Who Can Get Dental Implants and Important Health Considerations

Most healthy adults can get dental implants, but certain health conditions require special consideration or may require treatment first.

General Requirements

You need to have enough jawbone to support an implant post. If you've been missing teeth for a long time, your jawbone may have shrunk, which is why bone grafting is sometimes necessary. You also need healthy gums. If you have gum disease, it typically needs to be treated before implant placement. Good oral hygiene after implant placement is crucial for long-term success.

Medical Conditions That May Affect Implants

Uncontrolled diabetes can slow healing and increase implant failure risk. If you have diabetes, work with your doctor to manage your blood sugar levels before getting implants. Osteoporosis makes bones weaker and may affect implant success, though people with osteoporosis can still get implants with proper planning. Heart disease and high blood pressure don't prevent implants, but your dentist needs to know about these conditions. Smoking significantly increases implant failure risk—smokers have higher failure rates than non-smokers. Some medications that thin blood or affect bone health may require adjustments before implant placement.

Autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus require careful evaluation. Some people with these conditions have successful implants, while others may have complications. Discuss your specific situation with your dentist and doctor.

Age Considerations

There's no maximum age for implants. Healthy older adults get implants regularly. However, implants typically aren't placed until your jawbones have finished growing, which is usually in your late teens or early 20s.

What to Discuss with Your Dentist

Before pursuing implants, tell your dentist about all health conditions, medications, and supplements you take. Be honest about smoking and drinking habits. Discuss any concerns about
