Free Guide to Deleting Apps on Samsung Devices

Understanding App Removal on Samsung Devices

Samsung phones and tablets come with many applications pre-installed by the manufacturer and your mobile carrier. Over time, you may want to remove apps you no longer use to free up storage space, reduce clutter on your home screen, or improve device performance. This guide provides information about the different ways to remove applications from Samsung devices running various versions of Android.

Samsung devices typically have two main categories of apps: system apps that are built into the device and user-installed apps that you downloaded yourself. System apps are part of the core operating system and may have restrictions on removal, while user-installed apps can generally be removed more straightforwardly. Understanding which type of app you want to remove is the first step in the deletion process.

The methods for removing apps on Samsung devices have remained relatively consistent across different Android versions, though the specific steps may vary slightly depending on whether you own a newer or older Samsung phone or tablet. Samsung devices running Android 12 and later have similar app removal processes to those running Android 11 or earlier, though the visual appearance of menus may differ.

Before removing any app, consider whether you might need it in the future. While most removed apps can be reinstalled from the Google Play Store, some pre-installed apps cannot be restored without a factory reset. Taking a moment to verify that you truly want to remove an app prevents unnecessary complications later.

Key takeaway: Familiarize yourself with the two types of apps on your device—system apps and user-installed apps—since they have different removal options and restrictions.

Removing Apps from Your Home Screen and App Drawer

The most common way users interact with apps on Samsung devices is through the home screen, where frequently used applications appear as icons. You can remove an app from your home screen without actually deleting it from your device entirely. This method simply hides the app icon from view, but the app remains installed and functional. This approach works well when you want to declutter your home screen without losing the ability to use the app later.

To remove an app icon from your home screen on most Samsung devices, press and hold the app icon until a menu appears. Depending on your device's Android version, you'll see options such as "Remove from Home screen," "Delete," or similar language. Selecting this option removes the icon from the home screen but leaves the app installed. You can still access the app by opening your app drawer and searching for it there.

The app drawer is where all installed applications appear, organized either alphabetically or by categories depending on your settings. Even after removing an app icon from your home screen, it remains in the app drawer. To access it later, open the app drawer and scroll through or search for the app by name. This method of removal is useful for apps you occasionally need but don't want visible on your home screen every day.

Some Samsung devices allow you to reorganize your apps into folders on the home screen, which provides another way to reduce visual clutter. You can create a folder called "Utilities" or "Tools" and move less frequently used apps into it. This keeps your home screen organized while maintaining quick access to apps when needed.

Key takeaway: Removing an app from your home screen keeps the app installed but hides its icon; use this method when you want a cleaner home screen but may need the app in the future.

Completely Uninstalling User-Downloaded Apps

When you want to fully remove an application that you installed yourself—such as games, social media apps, or utility programs—you can uninstall it completely from your Samsung device. This process removes not only the app icon but also all the application files and data associated with it from your device's storage. Uninstalling apps frees up storage space and can help your device run more smoothly if you have limited available space.

The most direct method to uninstall an app on a Samsung device is to open the Settings app, navigate to Applications (sometimes labeled as Apps or Application Manager), and find the app you wish to remove. Select the app name, and you'll see an "Uninstall" button. Tapping this button removes the app and displays a confirmation message. After confirmation, the app is completely removed from your device.

An alternative method is to access the Google Play Store, which is where most users originally installed their apps. Open the Play Store, search for the app name, and select it. The app's information page displays an "Uninstall" button that you can tap to remove the app from your device. The Play Store method is convenient because you can also see app reviews and information about the app before deciding to uninstall it.

You can also uninstall apps by long-pressing the app icon on your home screen or in the app drawer. A menu typically appears with options including "Uninstall." Selecting this option removes the app from your device entirely. Some Samsung devices show a trash or delete icon that appears when you long-press an app, and dragging the app to this icon also uninstalls the application.

When you uninstall an app, any data associated with that app is typically removed as well. This means saved preferences, login information, and files stored within the app are deleted. If you think you might want to use the app again in the future, reinstalling it from the Google Play Store takes only a few minutes and is free for most apps.

Key takeaway: Use the Settings menu, Google Play Store, or long-press methods to completely uninstall user-downloaded apps and recover storage space on your device.

Handling Pre-Installed System Apps and Bloatware

Samsung devices come with many pre-installed applications that serve various purposes, from productivity tools to entertainment apps. Some of these apps you may never use. While many user-installed apps can be completely removed, pre-installed system apps often have limitations. Understanding what can and cannot be removed helps you manage your device more effectively and avoid accidentally removing essential applications.

Many pre-installed apps can be "disabled" rather than uninstalled. Disabling an app removes it from your app drawer and home screen while keeping its core files on your device. To disable an app on Samsung devices, open Settings, go to Applications, find the app you want to disable, and look for a "Disable" or "Uninstall updates" button. Apps that are disabled will no longer run or send notifications, and they won't appear in your app list, but they can be re-enabled later if needed.

Some Samsung devices allow certain pre-installed apps to be fully uninstalled. This varies by manufacturer, carrier, and Android version. Apps like Chrome, Maps, Gmail, and other Google applications can often be uninstalled if you have alternative versions installed. Your device's phone app, messaging app, contacts app, and system settings apps generally cannot be removed because the device requires them to function properly.

Bloatware refers to pre-installed apps that many users consider unnecessary or unwanted. Common examples include carrier-specific apps, promotional apps, or duplicate apps when multiple versions exist. While you may not be able to completely uninstall all bloatware, disabling these apps achieves a similar result by removing them from view and preventing them from running in the background.

Before attempting to disable or uninstall any pre-installed app, research its function to confirm it's not essential to your device's operation. Reading app descriptions in the Settings menu or searching online for the app name helps you understand its purpose. Removing or disabling the wrong system app can cause problems with your device's functionality.

Key takeaway: Pre-installed apps have different removal options than user-installed apps; use the disable function for apps you cannot uninstall, and always verify that an app is not essential before removing it.

Managing Storage Space and App Permissions After Removal

Removing apps from your Samsung device has direct benefits for storage management. Each installed app takes up space on your device's internal storage, and this space can accumulate over time, especially if you regularly install new apps. By identifying and removing apps you don't use, you can recover significant storage space. Devices with low available storage may run slower, have difficulty installing updates, or struggle to perform basic functions, so managing storage by removing unnecessary apps is an important maintenance task.
