Understanding the Common App: What It Is and How It Works

The Common Application, commonly called the Common App, is a single online form that high school students can submit to multiple colleges at once. Rather than filling out different forms for each school, students complete one main application that includes standard questions about their background, academics, and interests. Over 900 colleges and universities across the United States and internationally accept the Common App as part of their admissions process.

The Common App operates through a website where students create an account and build their profile. Once created, this single profile can be sent to any of the member institutions that a student chooses. Each college receives the same core information, though many schools add supplemental questions specific to their programs, values, or community. The system launched in 1975 as a paper form shared among a handful of elite institutions and has grown into the largest admissions platform in the world.

Students typically begin using the Common App during their senior year of high school, though some students may start earlier. The application season generally opens on August 1st each year and remains open through January for most institutions, though individual colleges set their own deadlines. Some schools use rolling admissions, meaning they review applications throughout the year, while others have single deadline dates.

The Common App is owned and operated by a nonprofit organization governed by member institutions. This means colleges themselves determine how the platform functions and what information students must provide. The system is designed to reduce application burden while giving schools the information they need to make admissions decisions.

Practical takeaway: Understanding that the Common App is a shared platform used by hundreds of schools can help students recognize that one completed form serves many purposes. Learning the basic structure and timeline helps students plan when to gather necessary materials and information before starting the application process.

The Main Application Components: What Students Need to Know

The Common App contains several key sections that students must complete. The "Profile" section gathers basic personal information such as name, contact details, date of birth, and citizenship status. This section also asks about family background, including parents' education levels and occupations, which colleges use to understand students' circumstances.

The "Family" section requires students to list information about parents, guardians, and siblings. Students report whether parents attended college, their employment, and household income information. This data helps colleges understand a student's family background and may be relevant to admissions decisions at some institutions.

The "Education" section covers high school information, including the name and location of the school, graduation date, and GPA if the school calculates one. Students list all courses taken, particularly rigorous ones like Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or honors classes. This section is critical because colleges examine the rigor of a student's course selection when evaluating their academic record.

The "Testing" section allows students to enter standardized test scores from the SAT, ACT, AP exams, or IB exams if they choose. It's important to note that many colleges have made standardized testing optional in recent years, meaning students may choose not to submit scores. This section reflects what scores students decide to share.

The "Activities" section gives students space to describe up to 10 extracurricular involvements, including clubs, sports, volunteer work, employment, or other meaningful activities. Students describe each activity, their role, and the hours per week and weeks per year they participated. This section helps colleges understand how students spend time outside the classroom.

The "Essays" section includes one required personal statement that all Common App members receive. The personal statement asks students to reflect on a topic of their choice or to write about a challenge they have overcome. This is typically 650 words and is meant to help colleges understand the student's voice and perspective.

Practical takeaway: Students benefit from reviewing each section in advance and gathering materials like transcripts, test scores, and a record of activities before sitting down to complete the application. Organizing this information ahead of time makes the writing process smoother and more focused.

Exploring Different Essay Prompts and Writing Strategies

The Common App provides a set of personal statement prompts each year, typically seven options. These prompts change annually and are designed to encourage students to share something meaningful about themselves. Past prompts have asked students to describe a moment when they questioned a belief, to write about a person who has influenced them, or to discuss a background or identity they think is important.

One prompt invites students to write about intellectual curiosity and what excites them to learn. Another asks students to describe a talent or skill and its importance to their identity. The prompts are intentionally open-ended to allow students from all backgrounds to find a topic that feels genuine to them. Students choose one prompt and write a response of up to 650 words.

Beyond the main personal statement, most colleges that use the Common App also ask supplemental questions. These might include questions like "Why do you want to attend our college?" or "Tell us about an experience that shaped your values." Supplemental essays are typically shorter, ranging from 50 to 250 words, and help colleges learn what specifically appeals to a student about their institution.

Strong Common App essays tend to share certain characteristics. They are specific and detailed rather than general. For example, an essay about overcoming a challenge includes concrete examples of what the challenge was and what actions the student took, rather than making broad statements. Successful essays also sound like the student writing them, using their own voice and language rather than formal or overly polished prose that doesn't reflect how they actually speak.

Students should also be aware that many colleges no longer require essays or have made them optional. Some institutions only request supplemental essays specific to their programs. Reading each school's specific requirements ensures students understand what writing is expected for each college on their list.

Practical takeaway: Brainstorming essay topics several weeks before writing allows students to reflect on meaningful experiences and select topics they feel comfortable exploring. Starting early provides time to write multiple drafts, get feedback from teachers or mentors, and revise before submission deadlines.

Letters of Recommendation: How They Work in the Common App System

Most colleges that use the Common App request letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, or other adults who know the student well. The Common App simplifies this process by allowing students to request letters directly through the platform. When a student requests a letter, the recommender receives an email with instructions on how to submit their letter through the Common App portal.

Typically, colleges ask for letters from teachers in core academic subjects such as English, math, science, or history. Some schools may request a counselor recommendation as well. The number of letters required varies by institution—many ask for two teacher recommendations and a school counselor recommendation, while others may ask for one or three letters. Students should check the specific requirements for each college they are considering.

The Common App system allows recommenders to upload their letters directly, which creates a record that the letter was submitted and ensures colleges receive them in a standardized format. This eliminates the need for students to collect paper letters and submit them separately to each school. The system also tracks which recommenders have submitted letters and sends reminders if deadlines are approaching.

Students should ask potential recommenders for letters well in advance of deadlines—typically at least two weeks before the earliest deadline, though more time is better. When requesting a letter, students may provide recommenders with information about the colleges they are applying to and any specific prompts or questions the schools have asked. This context helps recommenders write letters that are most useful to colleges.

It's important to note that the Common App system is set up so that once a student invites a recommender, the student typically cannot see the letter before it is submitted. This is by design, as colleges believe that letters written without the student's knowledge are more honest and credible. Students should trust recommenders they select and feel confident that these adults will provide positive accounts of their character and abilities.

Practical takeaway: Students should make a list of teachers and counselors they have strong relationships with and ask for recommendations as early as possible in the fall. Building strong connections with teachers throughout high school makes it easier to identify recommenders who can speak meaningfully about a student's abilities and character.

Understanding Supplemental Essays and School-Specific Questions

While the Common App personal statement is the same for all schools, individual colleges add their own supplemental questions to learn more about why a student is interested in attending their institution. These supplemental prompts vary widely depending on the school's focus, values, and academic programs. Some
