Where to Donate Clothing in Portland: A Complete Overview

Portland has numerous organizations that accept clothing donations, making it simple to find a location near you. Understanding where your donations go and how different organizations use them can help you make informed choices about where to contribute your items.

The major categories of clothing donation locations in Portland include nonprofit thrift stores, national charitable organizations, local community groups, and textile recycling centers. Each type of organization has different processes for accepting donations and different ways they use the items they receive. Nonprofit thrift stores, for example, sell donated clothing to raise money for specific causes—such as job training programs, homeless services, or mental health support. National organizations like Goodwill and The Salvation Army operate similarly, using revenue from clothing sales to fund their broader community programs.

Local Portland organizations such as Outside In, a clinic serving homeless and low-income individuals, operate thrift stores where donations directly support healthcare services. Join Together PDX accepts clothing and household items to distribute to people experiencing homelessness. Mercy Corps Northwest runs a thrift store in Northeast Portland where donations support their job training and financial services programs.

Practical takeaway: Before donating, check an organization's website or call ahead to learn their specific donation guidelines and drop-off hours. This prevents wasted trips and ensures your items meet their requirements.

How Nonprofit Thrift Stores Use Your Donations

When you donate clothing to Portland's nonprofit thrift stores, your contribution goes directly into a cycle that creates community impact. Unlike for-profit thrift stores, nonprofit thrift stores use revenue from selling donated items to fund their specific missions. This means your donation serves a dual purpose: the store sells the clothing, and the money supports programs that benefit Portland residents.

Goodwill Portland operates multiple locations across the metro area and uses clothing sales revenue to support job training and employment services for people with barriers to work, including those with disabilities, veterans, and people with criminal records. In 2022, Goodwill served over 4,000 people through their employment programs in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The Salvation Army similarly uses thrift store revenue to fund programs including disaster relief, food pantries, emergency financial assistance, and substance abuse treatment.

Smaller local nonprofits also benefit significantly from clothing donations. Join Together PDX, based in Portland, accepts clothing donations at their Pearl District location and distributes items directly to people experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Outside In's thrift stores specifically target revenue to support their free and low-cost health services for Portland's unhoused and low-income populations. These organizations typically operate with lean budgets, so thrift store revenue represents a meaningful funding source.

The clothing donation cycle also reduces waste in landfills. According to the EPA, Americans discard approximately 81 pounds of clothing per person annually. By donating instead of discarding, you help keep textiles out of waste streams while supporting community programs. Some nonprofit thrift stores also partner with textile recycling services, which means items that don't sell in the store may be recycled or sent to other markets rather than ending up in landfills.

Practical takeaway: Research the specific mission of the nonprofit before donating. If you support a particular cause—such as job training, homeless services, or health care—look for a thrift store operated by an organization focused on that issue.

What Clothing Items Organizations Accept and Reject

Most Portland clothing donation organizations follow similar guidelines about what they can and cannot accept. Understanding these requirements helps you donate items that organizations can actually use, rather than items that create sorting and disposal work. General guidelines apply across most nonprofits and thrift stores, though some organizations have specific preferences based on their inventory needs and storage space.

Accepted items typically include clean, gently used clothing in all seasons: shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, jackets, sweaters, and underwear. Shoes in wearable condition are usually accepted, though some organizations request that shoes be paired and tied together. Accessories such as belts, scarves, hats, gloves, and purses are generally welcome. Many organizations also accept items like winter coats, business clothes, and formal wear, which are often in high demand.

Items that most organizations cannot accept include stained, torn, or heavily worn clothing; swimwear that has been worn; lingerie; undergarments with damage; shoes with broken heels, deep creases, or significant wear; and items with broken zippers or missing buttons. Most organizations cannot accept clothing with permanent odors, mold, or mildew. Items that have been water-damaged, even if they appear dry, are typically rejected due to potential mold concerns. Formal wear with stains or damage and vintage or specialty items in poor condition generally cannot be resold.

Some Portland organizations have specific restrictions. Outside In's thrift stores request that clothing be freshly laundered and free of damage. Join Together PDX accepts clothing but asks that items be clean and in usable condition. The Salvation Army and Goodwill both require that items be clean and free of major damage, though they can often repair minor issues like loose buttons or small tears.

Practical takeaway: Before donating, ask yourself if you would wear the item or give it to a friend. If the answer is no due to stains, tears, odors, or damage, the organization likely cannot use it either. Clean items in wearable condition have the most value to charities.

Practical takeaway: Call or visit the website of your chosen organization before dropping off donations. This prevents wasted trips and ensures your donation reaches the right place.
