Free Guide to Checking Your NVC Case Status
Understanding the NVC Case Status System
The National Visa Center (NVC) is a U.S. government agency that processes immigrant visa cases. When you file a family-based or employment-based immigration petition, your case moves through several stages. Understanding how the NVC system works helps you know what to look for when you check your case status.

The NVC receives cases after USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) approves your initial petition. Think of it this way: USCIS approves that you have a valid reason to immigrate, and then NVC takes over to prepare your case for the visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. The NVC handles administrative tasks like collecting documents, scheduling interviews, and coordinating with the embassy.
Your case at NVC goes through predictable phases. First, NVC receives your case file from USCIS and creates a case number. Then it sends you a receipt notice with that number. Next, NVC requests documents from you and the person sponsoring your immigration (called the petitioner or beneficiary, depending on your situation). Once NVC receives all needed paperwork, it reviews everything and sends your case to the appropriate U.S. embassy or consulate. Finally, that embassy schedules your visa interview.
The whole NVC process typically takes 3 to 6 months, though this varies based on the visa category and how quickly you return documents. Some cases move faster, while others take longer if documents are missing or if there are issues that need clarification.
Practical takeaway: Before checking your status, know that NVC handles cases after USCIS approval. If your case is still at USCIS, you won't find it in the NVC system yet.
How to Access the NVC Case Status Portal
The NVC operates an online portal where you can check your case status from home. This portal is free and available 24 hours a day. You don't need to call, email, or visit an office to look up basic information about where your case is in the process.

To use the NVC portal, visit the official NVC website at nvc.state.gov. On the homepage, look for a section labeled "Check Your Case Status" or "Case Status." You'll be asked to enter two pieces of information: your NVC case number and your immigrant visa case number. These numbers appear on official documents you received from NVC after your case arrived there.
If you don't have these numbers, you can still search by entering your name, date of birth, and passport number. The system will search for cases matching that information. Be patient—it may take a moment to retrieve results, especially during busy times.
The portal works on most web browsers, including Chrome, Safari, and Edge. You don't need to create an account or download special software. Simply go to the website and enter your information. The system displays results immediately if your case is in the database.
If you have difficulty accessing the online portal, NVC also provides phone support. You can call the NVC at 1-603-334-0700 to speak with someone who can provide your case status over the phone. This line is available Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Have your case numbers or identification documents ready when you call.
Practical takeaway: Bookmark the NVC website (nvc.state.gov) and keep your case numbers in a safe place. Having these numbers ready makes checking your status take just a few minutes.
What Information the Status Portal Shows You
When you check your NVC case status online, you'll see specific information about where your case stands. Understanding what each piece of information means helps you know whether your case is progressing normally or whether you need to take action.

The portal typically shows your case status using clear language like "Case Received," "Documents Requested," "Documents Processing," "Case Approved," or "Case at Embassy." Each status tells you what stage of the NVC process your case is in. "Case Received" means NVC just got your file from USCIS. "Documents Requested" means NVC is waiting for you to send required papers. "Documents Processing" means NVC received your documents and is reviewing them. "Case at Embassy" means your case is ready for an interview at the embassy in your country.
The portal also shows important dates. You'll see when NVC first received your case, when documents were requested, and when documents were received. Some portals show the name and location of the embassy where your interview will take place. This information helps you plan for what comes next in your immigration process.
Many portals include a section showing which documents NVC has received from you and which are still missing. This is valuable information because missing documents can delay your case. If you see that certain papers haven't been received, you know you need to send them. The portal may also show when NVC sent documents to the embassy and whether the embassy has scheduled your interview yet.
It's important to understand what the portal doesn't show. It doesn't provide personal immigration advice. It doesn't explain why your case might be delayed or what to do about specific problems. It's purely an information tool showing factual details about your case status. If you have questions about what the status means for your particular situation, you may need to contact NVC directly or speak with an immigration representative.
Practical takeaway: Write down the information you see in the status portal, including dates and document lists. Keeping records helps you track progress over time and spot any missing documents you need to send.
Common Case Status Updates and What They Mean
NVC uses standard status descriptions that show where your case is in the process. Learning what these mean prevents confusion and helps you understand whether action is needed on your part.

"Case Received" means NVC has just received your file from USCIS. This is the starting point. Your case was approved by USCIS, and now NVC has it in their system. Typically, you'll see this status for just a few days before NVC moves to the next phase. During this time, NVC creates your case file and prepares to send document request letters.
"Documents Requested" or "Awaiting Documents" means NVC has sent you and the petitioner a formal letter asking for specific documents. This is an important status because it tells you that action is required from you. NVC needs you to gather and send items like police certificates, medical examination results, financial documents, and birth certificates. The request letter includes a list of exactly which papers are needed and instructions for sending them. This phase usually lasts several weeks and depends on how quickly you can collect and mail the documents.
"Documents Received" means NVC got the paperwork you sent. However, your case may still show "Documents Requested" if NVC is still waiting for items from the petitioner or if additional documents are needed. Check the status regularly because NVC may send follow-up requests for missing items.
"Documents Processing" or "Case Under Review" means NVC received all your documents and is examining them to make sure everything is correct and complete. During this phase, NVC checks that forms are filled out properly, that all required documents are included, and that the information matches between documents. This phase typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks. You should not send additional documents during this time unless NVC specifically requests them.
"Case Approved" or "Case Forwarded to Embassy" means NVC finished reviewing your documents and found everything in order. Your case is now being sent to the U.S. embassy or consulate where you'll have your visa interview. The embassy will contact you directly to schedule the interview. This is a positive development and means you're moving toward the final step of the visa process.
"Case at Embassy" means the embassy has received your file and is preparing for your interview. The embassy will send you instructions about your medical examination, interview appointment, and what documents to bring to the interview.
Practical takeaway: When you see "Documents Requested," respond as quickly as possible. Delays in sending documents are one of the most common reasons cases take longer than expected.
