Free Guide to Changing Your Illinois Address With Secretary of State

Understanding Illinois Address Changes and Secretary of State Requirements

When you move to a new address in Illinois, several government records need to be updated. The Illinois Secretary of State maintains records related to driver's licenses, identification cards, and vehicle registration. Understanding how these records connect to an address change helps you know what steps to take and in what order.

An address change is different from other types of identification updates. When you move, your physical location changes, but your identity documents may still show your old address. The Secretary of State's office processes address updates for driver's licenses and ID cards through the Illinois Department of Secretary of State. This is a standard procedure that happens regularly—thousands of Illinois residents change their addresses each year as they relocate within the state or move to Illinois from other places.

The process involves notifying the Secretary of State about your new residence. This notification updates the address on file with your driver's license or identification card. Vehicle registration addresses are also maintained by the Secretary of State's office, so if you own a vehicle, you may need to update that separately or as part of the same process.

Illinois law requires that your address information remain current with the Secretary of State. This is not optional—it is a legal requirement for anyone holding a valid driver's license or ID card in the state. Keeping your address current helps ensure that official correspondence reaches you and that your records accurately reflect where you live.

Practical Takeaway: Before you begin the address change process, gather information about your current address on file with the Secretary of State and your new address. You will need your driver's license or ID card number and proof of your new residence to complete the update.

Documents and Information You Will Need

Preparing the correct documents before you start the address change process saves time and prevents delays. The Secretary of State requires specific documents to verify your identity and your new address. Having these documents ready means you can complete your update without making multiple trips or additional requests for information.

For proving your identity, you will need your current Illinois driver's license or identification card. This document serves as your primary form of identification during the address change process. The Secretary of State uses the information on this card to locate your existing record and make the update. If your card is expired, you may still use it for an address change, but you should be aware that renewing your license or ID may be necessary separately depending on the expiration date.

Proof of your new address is required to update your residence information. The Secretary of State accepts several types of documents as proof of residency. These may include utility bills showing your name and new address, lease agreements, mortgage statements, property tax bills, or official mail from government agencies addressed to you at your new location. Most documents must be dated within the last 60 days to be considered current. If you do not have a recent document in your name, you may use a combination of documents or contact the Secretary of State's office to discuss other options.

You will also need to know specific information about your current address and new address. Have your old address written down as it appears on your driver's license or ID card. Write down your new street address, city, and ZIP code exactly as you want it to appear on your updated license or ID. Double-checking this information before submitting your request prevents errors that could require additional corrections.

If you are changing your address at a Secretary of State facility in person, bring your original documents. If you are submitting documents by mail or through an online process, you may need to provide copies. Keep originals for your records.

Practical Takeaway: Create a folder with your current driver's license or ID card and at least one recent document showing your new address. Having these documents organized and ready means you can proceed with your address change quickly when you visit a Secretary of State office or prepare materials to mail.

Methods for Changing Your Address With the Secretary of State

Illinois offers multiple methods for updating your address with the Secretary of State. Depending on your situation and preferences, you may choose to make the change in person at a Secretary of State office, by mail, or through other channels that may be available. Understanding each method helps you decide which approach works best for your circumstances.

The in-person method involves visiting a local Secretary of State facility. Illinois has multiple Driver Services facilities throughout the state where staff members can process address changes. When you visit in person, you bring your documents, complete a form, and receive verification of your updated address. The staff member will review your identity document and proof of address, make the change in the system, and may issue you a new license or ID card with the updated address. Processing times for in-person changes are typically faster than other methods. You can search for the nearest Secretary of State facility on the official Illinois Secretary of State website, which lists all locations, hours of operation, and services available at each office.

The mail method allows you to submit your address change without visiting an office in person. To use this method, you complete the required form, gather copies of your documents, and mail everything to the address specified by the Secretary of State. This method takes longer than in-person processing—typically several weeks depending on mail delivery times and the volume of requests being processed. When you mail documents, send copies rather than originals, and keep a copy for your records. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you want confirmation of your address change mailed back to you.

Some address changes may be possible through online services if you meet certain requirements. The Illinois Secretary of State website provides information about which services can be completed online and which require in-person or mail submission. Online options, when available, offer convenience and quick processing, though not all address change situations may qualify for online processing.

Another consideration is whether you need to renew your driver's license or ID card at the same time. If your license or ID is expiring soon or has already expired, you might combine the renewal with your address change. This means completing both updates in a single visit or submission rather than handling them separately at different times.

Practical Takeaway: Visit the Illinois Secretary of State website to review the specific methods currently available for address changes and determine which method suits your timeline and situation. Note the location and hours of the nearest Secretary of State facility if you plan to visit in person, or gather the mailing address if you prefer to submit your change by mail.

Step-by-Step Process for In-Person Address Changes

If you decide to visit a Secretary of State facility to change your address, following a step-by-step process ensures you have everything ready and understand what will happen during your visit. This approach reduces wait times and helps the staff member complete your request accurately on the first attempt.

Step one is to locate your nearest Secretary of State Driver Services facility and note its hours. The Illinois Secretary of State website contains a complete facility locator. Some facilities accept walk-in customers while others operate by appointment only. Call ahead or check online to confirm whether you need to schedule an appointment or if you can simply arrive during business hours. This prevents arriving at a facility only to find it is closed or fully booked.

Step two involves gathering all required documents before you leave home. Bring your current Illinois driver's license or identification card, an original document proving your new address (or copies if the facility accepts them), and any other identification documents you have. If you have recently moved and do not yet have documents in your new address, the Secretary of State may accept documents showing your temporary address along with documentation of your move. Contact the facility if you have questions about which documents they will accept.

Step three is to arrive at the facility with adequate time before it closes. Bring your documents in an organized manner. At busy times, facilities may have wait times ranging from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the day and time. Arriving early in the day typically means shorter waits than visiting during lunch hours or late afternoon.

Step four happens when you check in at the facility. Tell the staff member you want to change your address. You may be given a number and asked to wait, or the staff member may begin processing your request immediately depending on the facility's procedures. Fill out any forms the staff member provides. The form will ask for your current address, your new address, and contact information.

Step five is when the staff member reviews your documents. They will examine your driver's license or ID card to verify your identity and check your current address on file. They will review your proof of address document to confirm your new residence. They may ask questions about your move or request additional information if anything seems unclear. Answer questions honestly and provide any additional documents if requested.

Step six involves the staff member updating your information in the system. Once everything is verified, they will enter your new address into the
