Free Guide to Changing Your Florida Driver License Name

Understanding Florida Driver License Name Changes

A Florida driver license shows your legal name as it appears on official government records. When your legal name changes—through marriage, divorce, court order, or other circumstances—the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) allows you to update this information on your license. This guide explains the process and what documents you may need to gather.

Name changes on a Florida driver license are handled through the standard license renewal or replacement process. You cannot change only your name without also renewing or replacing your license. The DHSMV treats a name change as a transaction that requires you to obtain a new physical license card. This means you will receive a new license number in some cases, though your driving history remains connected to your account with the state.

Florida law requires that your driver license reflect your current legal name. If you have legally changed your name and your license still shows your former name, the license is no longer valid as a primary form of identification for many purposes. Banks, employers, and government agencies may question whether the document matches your identity. Updating your license ensures consistency across your legal documents and reduces complications when you need to prove your identity.

The process differs slightly depending on whether you are renewing an expiring license, replacing a lost or damaged license, or simply updating an existing valid license with a new name. Understanding which category applies to you helps you gather the right documents and know what to expect at the DHSMV office or online.

Practical takeaway: Your first step is determining whether your license is expiring soon, has been lost or damaged, or is still valid. This determines which process you will follow and what fees may apply.

Required Documents for Name Change on Your License

Florida requires specific documents to prove your legal name change. The DHSMV will not process a name change request without acceptable proof. Understanding which documents count as acceptable proof can prevent delays and extra trips to the office.

If your name changed due to marriage, you will need an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate. This document shows your former name and your new legal name. The certificate must be from the county or state where you were married. A photocopy or informal copy typically will not work; the DHSMV requires official documentation. If you do not have your original certificate, you can request a certified copy from the county clerk's office where the marriage took place. This usually costs between $10 and $25 and takes one to two weeks to arrive by mail.

If your name changed due to divorce, you will need a certified copy of your final divorce decree. This legal document must show your name change from the marriage name back to your former name or to a new name you selected. A certified copy comes from the court that handled your divorce case. If you cannot locate your documents, the county courthouse can provide a certified copy for a small fee.

If your name changed through a legal court order—not related to marriage or divorce—you will need a certified copy of that court order. This applies to name changes granted by a judge for reasons such as personal preference or to correct a birth certificate error. The order must be from a Florida court or a court in another state, depending on where you obtained the order.

You will also need to bring a valid, current form of identification to the DHSMV office. Acceptable forms include a U.S. passport, a birth certificate, a military ID, a consular ID, or a current out-of-state driver license or ID card. You must also bring your Social Security number or proof of your Social Security number. This allows the DHSMV to verify your identity and connect your name change to your correct driving record.

Practical takeaway: Gather your legal name-change document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) in certified form before visiting the DHSMV. Bring your current ID and Social Security information as well.

Steps for Changing Your Name Through License Renewal

If your Florida driver license is expiring within a certain timeframe, you can change your name at the same time you renew your license. This is often the least expensive option because the renewal fee covers the name change as part of the process.

Begin by checking your current license to see your expiration date. If your license will expire within 180 days, you are eligible to renew it. In Florida, you may renew your license up to six months before the expiration date. Visit the DHSMV website and look for the "Renew Your Driver License" section. The website explains which renewal method you may use: online, by mail, or in person at an office.

If you choose to renew online, log into your account on the DHSMV website using your driver license number and date of birth. Online renewal is available only if you are simply renewing without significant changes. However, many people who are changing their name may need to renew in person because the online system may not process name changes. Check the website or call the DHSMV customer service line to confirm whether your situation qualifies for online renewal with a name change.

If you must renew in person, schedule an appointment through the DHSMV website or by calling their customer service line. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointment holders are typically seen faster. Bring your current driver license, certified copy of your name-change document, proof of your Social Security number, and proof of your Florida residency (such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement dated within the past 60 days). Bring your regular renewal fee, which is currently $75.50 for an eight-year license for most adults. If you are making a name change during renewal, no additional fee is charged on top of the renewal cost.

At the DHSMV office, an employee will review your documents, take a new photo, and process your renewal with your new name. You will receive a temporary paper license on the spot and your physical card will arrive in the mail within 5 to 7 business days. Your new license will show your updated legal name.

Practical takeaway: If your license expires soon, use the renewal process to make your name change at the same time. Schedule an appointment online to reduce your wait time at the office.

Steps for Changing Your Name Through License Replacement

If your driver license is not expiring soon but you want to change your name, you may obtain a replacement license with your new name. This process is separate from renewal and costs less than the full renewal fee.

A replacement license is appropriate when your current license is still valid but you want to update your name. The DHSMV considers this a "duplicate" or "replacement" transaction. Visit the DHSMV website and locate the "Replace Your Driver License" or "Get a Duplicate License" section. You will see information about the steps involved.

You have the option to replace your license in person at an DHSMV office. Bring your current valid driver license, certified copy of your name-change document, proof of your Social Security number, and proof of your Florida residency. The fee for a replacement license is typically $25 if you are only replacing it with a name change. An DHSMV employee will review your documents, take a new photo, and process your request. You will receive a temporary paper license and the physical card will arrive in the mail within 5 to 7 business days.

Some DHSMV offices may allow you to replace your license by mail if you are only making a name change and your current license is valid. The website explains whether your county office participates in the mail-in replacement program. If available, you would mail your current license, certified name-change document, proof of Social Security number, and the $25 replacement fee to your local DHSMV office. The office will process your request and mail your new license back to you. This option takes longer—typically 10 to 14 business days—but you avoid a trip to the office.

Do not apply for a replacement license if your current license is lost, stolen, or damaged. In those cases, you must follow the damaged or lost license process, which has different steps and may require additional documentation.

Practical takeaway: If your current license is valid and you only need to update your name, request a replacement license. This costs less than renewal and follows a faster process than waiting for your expiration date.
