Free Guide to Canceling YouTube Premium

Understanding YouTube Premium and Why People Cancel

YouTube Premium is a paid subscription service that removes advertisements from videos on YouTube and related platforms. When you subscribe, you pay a monthly fee to Google in exchange for an ad-free viewing experience, offline video watching, and background play features that let videos continue playing when your phone's screen is off.

YouTube Premium costs $13.99 per month for individual accounts, though this price may vary depending on your region and whether you signed up for a promotional rate. Family plans cost $22.99 per month and allow up to six family members to share the subscription. Students can access YouTube Premium Student at a reduced rate of $6.99 monthly.

People choose to cancel their YouTube Premium subscriptions for various reasons. Some find they no longer watch enough videos to justify the monthly cost. Others discover they can tolerate advertisements or use browser extensions to block ads on computers. Some users switch to other video platforms or reduce their overall screen time. Financial constraints lead many people to cut unnecessary subscriptions when managing their budgets.

The cancellation process itself is straightforward and can be completed through YouTube's settings on either a computer or mobile device. Google does not lock users into long-term contracts, meaning you can cancel anytime without penalties or fees. Your service continues through the end of your current billing cycle after cancellation.

Practical Takeaway: Before canceling, consider whether you might want to pause your subscription instead. YouTube offers a pause feature that temporarily stops your billing for up to three months without losing your account data or preferences.

How to Cancel YouTube Premium on Desktop

Canceling YouTube Premium through a web browser on your computer involves accessing your account settings and navigating to your subscription information. Start by visiting youtube.com and signing into the account associated with your Premium subscription. Look for your profile icon in the top right corner of the screen—this typically shows your initials or profile picture. Click this icon to open a dropdown menu with various account options.

From the dropdown menu, select "Purchases and subscriptions" or similar wording that indicates subscription management. This takes you to a page showing all active subscriptions linked to your Google account. You should see YouTube Premium listed here with your current billing amount and renewal date. Click on YouTube Premium to open your subscription details.

On the subscription details page, you will see a button labeled "Cancel subscription" or "Manage." Click this button to proceed. YouTube may ask you to confirm your cancellation and might offer you the option to pause your subscription instead of canceling permanently. If you want to cancel completely rather than pause, select the cancellation option and confirm.

After cancellation, you should receive a confirmation email from Google within a few minutes. This email documents your cancellation date and specifies when your current billing period ends. You will maintain access to YouTube Premium features until the end of your current billing cycle. After that date, advertisements will resume on your videos unless you resubscribe.

If you encounter any issues during this process, such as the cancellation button not appearing, try clearing your web browser's cache and cookies, then log back in and attempt the process again. Different browsers occasionally display web pages differently, so trying a different browser can also help troubleshoot.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your current billing date before canceling so you know exactly when your Premium access ends. This prevents confusion if you accidentally see an advertisement before expecting one.

Canceling YouTube Premium on Mobile Devices

Mobile users can cancel their YouTube Premium subscriptions through either the YouTube app or the Google Play Store (on Android) or the App Store (on iPhone). The process differs slightly depending on which method you use and which operating system your device runs.

For Android users working through Google Play, open the Google Play Store app and tap the profile icon in the top right corner. Select "Payments and subscriptions" from the menu. Tap "Subscriptions" to see all your active subscriptions. Find YouTube Premium in the list and tap it to open the subscription page. You will see an option to "Cancel subscription." Tap this button and confirm your cancellation when prompted.

iPhone users should open the App Store app (not the YouTube app itself). Tap the account icon in the bottom right corner and select "Subscriptions." Look for YouTube Premium in the subscriptions list. Tap YouTube Premium to view your subscription details. An option to "Cancel Subscription" or "Edit" should appear. Select the cancellation option and follow the prompts to confirm.

Alternatively, both Android and iPhone users can cancel directly through the YouTube app. Open YouTube, tap your profile icon, and select "Purchases and subscriptions" (this option only appears if you're subscribed to Premium). Tap YouTube Premium and look for the cancellation option. This method may be less reliable than using the official app store, as some features don't display properly on all devices.

Mobile cancellations process identically to desktop cancellations—your Premium access continues through your current billing cycle, and you receive a confirmation email. Make sure you are logged into the correct Google account before canceling, as many people have multiple accounts.

Practical Takeaway: If you use YouTube on multiple devices, you only need to cancel once through any device. Your cancellation applies to your entire Google account, not individual devices.

What Happens After You Cancel

Understanding what changes after cancellation helps you prepare for the transition back to the standard YouTube experience. Your Premium features do not shut off immediately when you click "cancel"—instead, they remain active through the final day of your current billing cycle. If you cancel mid-cycle, you still receive the full period you've already paid for.

Once your billing cycle ends, advertisements return to all YouTube videos you watch. These ads appear both before videos start and in the middle of longer videos. You will also lose access to background play, which means videos pause when you minimize the YouTube app or turn your phone's screen off. Offline viewing disappears as well, so any videos you previously saved to watch offline may not remain available after cancellation.

Your YouTube account itself, including your subscriptions to channels, playlists, watch history, and saved videos, remains intact after Premium cancellation. You do not lose your account or any of this data. If you decide to resubscribe to Premium at any point in the future, all your saved content and preferences will still be there waiting for you.

YouTube may send you promotional offers after cancellation, attempting to encourage you to resubscribe at a discounted rate. These offers typically arrive via email or as notifications within the YouTube app. You are under no obligation to respond to these offers, and ignoring them will not affect your account in any way. Some offers, however, do provide genuine discounts if you decide resubscription might be worthwhile later.

If you originally subscribed through a family plan, canceling removes you from that family group. The family manager can add you back or invite you to rejoin at any time. Other family members' access remains unaffected by one person's cancellation.

Practical Takeaway: Before your Premium access ends, download any videos you've saved offline that you want to keep, as these may become unavailable after cancellation.

Troubleshooting Common Cancellation Issues

Most cancellations process without problems, but some users encounter obstacles that prevent them from completing the process. The most common issue involves the cancellation button not appearing in subscription settings. This typically happens when your account is linked to a third-party payment method like Apple, Samsung, or Amazon rather than directly to Google.

If you subscribed through an app store or third-party payment system, you must cancel through that same service. For example, if you started your YouTube Premium subscription on an iPhone, you cannot cancel through YouTube's website—you must go through the App Store. Similarly, if you subscribed through Amazon Prime or Facebook, you need to manage the cancellation in those respective platforms. Check your confirmation emails from when you subscribed to identify which service processed your payment.

Another common issue involves users being unable to locate the "Purchases and subscriptions" option in their profile menu. This usually means you are not logged into the account that is actually subscribed to Premium. Google accounts can be confusing when you use multiple accounts on one device. Sign out completely from YouTube, then sign in again using the email address that receives the monthly Premium charge confirmation.

Some users find that the cancellation button appears grayed out or inactive. This occasionally happens due to temporary technical issues. Try using a different browser or
