Free Guide to Canceling Your Uber Eats Order

Understanding Uber Eats Order Cancellation Basics

Uber Eats allows customers to cancel orders under certain circumstances, and the process differs depending on what stage your order is in. When you place an order through the Uber Eats app or website, you enter into a transaction that can be modified or canceled before the restaurant begins preparing your food. Understanding when and how you can cancel helps you manage your account effectively and avoid unwanted charges.

The cancellation window is typically brief—usually between 30 seconds and a few minutes after placing your order. This timeframe gives you a moment to reconsider your selection before the restaurant receives the order notification. Once the restaurant starts preparing your food, cancellation becomes more complicated and may result in charges. Uber Eats has specific policies about refunds and cancellation fees that vary based on timing and circumstances.

Different situations warrant different cancellation approaches. If you've made a mistake in your order, changed your mind about what you want to eat, or need to cancel due to a delivery issue, Uber Eats provides methods to handle each scenario. The key is recognizing which stage your order is in and what options remain available to you. Some orders may be fully refundable, while others may incur partial charges or cancellation fees.

Your account status, payment method, and order history may influence how cancellation requests are processed. Users with established accounts and positive histories may receive more favorable treatment than new accounts. Understanding these factors helps you know what to expect when you initiate a cancellation and what documentation you might need if a dispute arises.

Practical Takeaway: Act quickly if you need to cancel. The sooner you cancel after placing an order, the better your chances of receiving a full refund. Delays increase the likelihood that the restaurant has already begun preparation, which typically triggers cancellation fees.

Step-by-Step Cancellation Process Through the App

The Uber Eats mobile app provides the most direct method for canceling orders. After opening the app, navigate to the "Orders" or "Active Orders" section, usually found at the bottom of your screen. This section displays all current orders, including those being prepared or out for delivery. Locating your order here is the first step in the cancellation process.

Once you've found the order you wish to cancel, tap on it to open the order details screen. This screen shows your selected items, delivery address, estimated arrival time, and any special instructions you included. At the bottom of the order details, you should see a "Cancel Order" button. This button may be labeled differently depending on your app version, but it serves the same function. Tap this button to proceed with cancellation.

The app will typically ask you to confirm your cancellation and may require you to select a reason. Reasons might include "I changed my mind," "I ordered by mistake," "The order is taking too long," or "Delivery address was wrong." Selecting a reason helps Uber Eats understand cancellation patterns and may affect how your refund is processed. Be honest about your reason, as this information is reviewed by the company.

After confirming your cancellation, the app displays a message indicating whether your cancellation was successful. If successful, you'll receive an order cancellation notification. The app will also show the refund status—either indicating that a refund will be processed or that a cancellation fee has been deducted. Refunds typically appear in your original payment method within 5 to 10 business days, though some cards or digital wallets process refunds faster.

If the cancellation button is grayed out or unavailable, this means the restaurant has already started preparing your order. In this situation, you'll need to explore alternative options, which are covered in later sections of this guide.

Practical Takeaway: Open the Uber Eats app immediately and go to your active orders. If you can see the "Cancel Order" button and it's selectable, your cancellation will likely be processed without fees. Taking this action within the first minute or two of placing your order provides the best outcome.

Canceling Through the Website and Browser Version

If you prefer using a web browser instead of the mobile app, Uber Eats provides a website version that allows order cancellation. The process mirrors the app method but with slightly different navigation. Log into your Uber Eats account at ubereats.com using your email address and password. Make sure you're logged into the account that placed the order you want to cancel.

Once logged in, look for your account menu, typically accessible by clicking your profile picture or account icon in the upper right corner. From this menu, select "Orders" or "Your Orders" to view your order history and active orders. The page will display both recent and current orders. Find the order you wish to cancel and click on it to open the detailed order view.

The detailed order page shows all information about your order, including items, pricing, delivery address, and order status. Look for a "Cancel Order" link or button, usually positioned near the top or bottom of the order details section. Click this option to begin the cancellation process. The website will prompt you to confirm your decision and may ask you to provide a cancellation reason, similar to the app experience.

The website version sometimes displays the order status more clearly than the app, showing whether the restaurant has begun preparation. If the status shows "Preparing" or "On the way," the cancellation button may be unavailable. This visual indicator helps you understand why cancellation might not be possible before you attempt it.

After successfully canceling through the website, you'll receive a confirmation message on screen and via email to your registered account email address. This email provides documentation of your cancellation request, which is useful if you need to reference it later for disputes or questions about refunds.

Practical Takeaway: The website cancellation process offers the same functionality as the app but provides a clearer view of order status and timing. If the app seems slow or unresponsive, try canceling through your web browser instead, where you may see more detailed status information.

Understanding Refund Policies and Cancellation Fees

Uber Eats refund policies depend on when you cancel relative to restaurant preparation. If you cancel before the restaurant receives your order or immediately after, you typically receive a full refund of the food portion and delivery fees. This is the ideal cancellation scenario. However, once the restaurant confirms the order and begins gathering ingredients or preparing your food, cancellation fees may apply.

Cancellation fees generally range from 10% to 50% of your order total, depending on how far into preparation the restaurant has progressed. Some restaurants charge flat fees, while others charge percentages. Uber Eats displays estimated fees before you confirm a cancellation in most cases, though this information may not always be immediately visible. If a fee is applied, it's typically deducted from your refund amount.

Certain circumstances may result in full refunds even after preparation has begun. If the restaurant experiences issues or closes unexpectedly, Uber Eats may process a complete refund without penalty. Similarly, if you cancel due to a significant delivery delay—such as the driver being stuck in traffic far longer than estimated—you may be eligible for a full refund. These exceptions require communication with Uber Eats support.

Refunds are processed to your original payment method. If you paid with a credit card, the refund appears as a credit to that card. Debit card refunds typically process within 5 to 10 business days but may take longer depending on your bank. Refunds paid through digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay usually process faster, sometimes within 24 hours. Cash payments cannot be refunded and are generally non-cancellable.

Restaurant-specific refund policies sometimes differ from Uber Eats' standard policies. Some restaurants are stricter about cancellations, particularly if they've already begun preparing your order. Reading the restaurant's cancellation policy before ordering helps you understand what fees might apply. This information is typically found on the restaurant's Uber Eats page.

Practical Takeaway: Before confirming your cancellation, check whether a fee will be applied. If the fee is substantial, you might consider accepting the order instead and arranging to donate the food or pass it along to someone who needs it. However, if the fee is small or the order was placed by mistake, cancellation remains the better choice.
