Free Guide to BWI Airport Terminals and Connections

Understanding BWI Airport Layout and Terminal Structure

Baltimore/Washington International Airport, commonly called BWI or BWI Marshall, serves the Baltimore-Washington region with three main terminal buildings. The airport handled over 31 million passengers in 2022, making it a significant hub for the East Coast. Understanding the physical layout of these terminals helps travelers navigate the airport more efficiently and reduces confusion during connections.

The three main terminals are arranged in a roughly linear fashion: the International Pier (also called the A Pier), Terminal B, and Terminal C. Each terminal has distinct characteristics and serves different airline groups. Terminal B is the oldest and most central terminal, while Terminal C opened in 2003 and is the largest. The International Pier handles most international flights and some domestic carriers. Between these terminals, you'll find common areas including restaurants, shops, and seating.

The terminals are connected by an indoor walkway system that allows passengers to move between them without going outside. This walkway runs approximately 0.5 miles and takes roughly 10-15 minutes to walk at a normal pace. The walkway includes moving sidewalks in certain sections to speed up travel. The entire system is climate-controlled, which is particularly helpful during Baltimore's hot summers and cold winters.

Ground transportation including taxis, rental cars, and ground transportation services operate from all three terminals, though their specific locations differ. Each terminal has a lower level dedicated to arrivals and an upper level for departures. Baggage claim areas are clearly marked with signs in multiple languages, and airport staff members wear bright uniforms making them easy to identify for questions.

Practical Takeaway: When arriving at BWI, note which terminal your flight uses immediately. Many confusion situations stem from passengers not knowing their terminal assignment. Check your airline confirmation or ask an airport representative upon arrival. If you're making a connection, the indoor walkway system means you won't need to go outside or use transportation between terminals.

Navigating Terminal B: The Central Hub

Terminal B serves as the central and oldest terminal at BWI, operating since 1992. Major airlines using Terminal B include Southwest Airlines, which operates a significant portion of flights from this facility, along with several other domestic carriers. The terminal handles approximately 60-70 daily departures during peak travel times. Understanding Terminal B's specific layout is important because many connecting passengers pass through this terminal.

Terminal B contains four concourses labeled A, B, C, and D. Gates in the A concourse typically serve domestic flights on various carriers. The B concourse hosts a mix of domestic and international connecting flights. The C concourse primarily handles Southwest Airlines operations, given that airline's major presence at BWI. The D concourse contains gates for various carriers and connects to the International Pier. Each concourse has its own set of restrooms, drinking fountains, and seating areas.

Security checkpoints in Terminal B are located after the main entrance hall and before the concourse areas. During peak travel times (typically 6-9 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.), security lines can take 20-40 minutes. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operates PreCheck lanes for eligible travelers who have enrolled in the program independently. Mobile apps like the MyTSA app provide current wait times at BWI security checkpoints.

Terminal B features approximately 30 food establishments ranging from national chains to local Baltimore restaurants. Notable options include Charm City Bagels featuring locally-roasted coffee, and several seafood restaurants serving the region's famous crab cakes. Retail shops include bookstores, technology retailers, and duty-free shops. Many restaurants and shops remain open during early morning hours, accommodating passengers with early departures.

The ground transportation center at Terminal B connects to the BWI Air Rail Link station, which provides train service to downtown Baltimore, Washington D.C. Union Station, and other regional locations. The light rail journey to downtown Baltimore takes approximately 30 minutes. Car rental facilities are accessible from the terminal's ground level, with major companies like Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis operating shuttle services from dedicated pickup areas.

Practical Takeaway: If connecting through Terminal B, allow at least 90 minutes between arriving and departing flights on different airlines, or 60 minutes for connections within the same airline. The distances between concourses are manageable, but security screening time is the primary factor. Use the mobile app to check current security wait times before arriving at the terminal.

Exploring Terminal C: The Largest Facility

Terminal C is BWI's largest and most modern terminal, having undergone major renovations and expansions in recent years. The terminal opened in its current configuration in 2003 and continues receiving improvements. Terminal C handles approximately 40-50% of the airport's total passenger volume during typical operating days. Several major carriers use Terminal C as a primary base, including United Airlines, which operates a significant hub operation from this facility.

Terminal C features three main concourses: Concourse A, Concourse B, and Concourse C. Unlike Terminal B's layout, Terminal C concourses branch off from a central hub area, creating somewhat different navigation patterns. The central area of Terminal C includes the main security checkpoints, restaurants, and retail establishments. Concourse A primarily handles United Airlines domestic and connecting flights. Concourse B features both domestic carriers and international connections. Concourse C contains additional gates for United and other carriers.

Terminal C's security checkpoint area is one of the largest at BWI, with multiple lanes to handle high passenger volumes. During peak hours, security wait times can reach 45 minutes, though off-peak times often see waits under 15 minutes. Terminal C has dedicated family screening lanes and standard lanes. TSA PreCheck and Real ID-compliant lanes operate during peak travel periods. The checkpoint areas have clear digital signage indicating wait times at each lane.

Dining and shopping options in Terminal C are particularly extensive, reflecting the terminal's size and passenger volume. The terminal features a food court with multiple vendors, standalone restaurants, and specialty food shops. Local Baltimore businesses operate several locations, including the Original Bay Seasoning shop for taking home Maryland crab seasoning. Retail options include Apple Store, Hudson News, Brookstone, and various clothing retailers. Seating areas throughout the concourses include charging stations for electronic devices.

Terminal C provides direct access to ground transportation services on its lower level. The BWI Air Rail Link light rail station connects Terminal C to regional train service. Taxi stands, rideshare pickup zones (Uber and Lyft), and rental car shuttle areas are all clearly marked. Terminal C's ground transportation layout is particularly well-organized with digital displays showing current wait times and vehicle assignments.

Practical Takeaway: Terminal C handles the most passenger traffic, which means security checkpoints and restaurants are typically crowded during peak travel windows. If you have a tight connection through Terminal C, plan to move quickly after security. The digital signage throughout the terminal clearly indicates gate assignments and wait times, making it relatively straightforward to navigate even during busy periods.

Using the International Pier for Global Connections

The International Pier, also called the A Pier, handles international flights and some domestic connections, making it a distinct facility from the other two main terminals. This pier processes approximately 20-30% of BWI's total passenger traffic. The pier specifically handles flights to Europe, the Caribbean, Central America, and Canada. Several international carriers operate from this facility including Lufthansa, Air Canada, and LATAM Airlines alongside domestic carriers.

The International Pier features its own dedicated security checkpoints with separate screening for U.S. citizens, foreign nationals, and connecting passengers. International departures require additional screening time compared to domestic flights, typically adding 30-60 minutes to the boarding process. Passengers should check with their airline regarding recommended arrival times for international flights, which often suggest arriving 3 hours before departure rather than the standard 2 hours for domestic flights.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facilities for international arrivals are located in the International Pier's baggage claim area. Arriving international passengers proceed through these facilities before collecting baggage and entering the main airport terminal areas. The CBP facility includes primary inspection booths and secondary inspection areas for additional questioning when needed. During peak international arrival times, processing can take 1-2 hours.

The International Pier contains several dining options featuring both international cuisine and American food. Notable restaurants include options serving European food, Caribbean cuisine, and Mexican dishes, reflecting the pier's primary flight destinations. A duty-free shop offers tax-free shopping on items including perfume, liquor, and electronics. The facility
