Free Guide to Avoiding Ticks Outdoors

Understanding Tick Biology and Behavior

Ticks are small parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles. Understanding how ticks live and behave is the foundation for avoiding them outdoors. Ticks do not jump or fly—they wait on vegetation for a host to pass by, then crawl onto clothing or skin. This passive hunting method means ticks are most active during times when people spend time in wooded areas, tall grass, and brush.

There are several species of ticks in North America, with the most common being the American dog tick, lone star tick, and blacklegged tick (also called the deer tick). The blacklegged tick is particularly important to know about because it can transmit Lyme disease, which affects thousands of Americans annually. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 476,000 cases of Lyme disease are estimated to occur each year in the United States, though only about 30,000 are officially reported.

Ticks have a life cycle with four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Larval ticks are tiny—about the size of a poppy seed—while nymphs are slightly larger but still small enough to be easily overlooked. Adult ticks are more visible but still small, ranging from the size of a sesame seed to a small pea. Understanding these size differences matters because nymphs are responsible for most Lyme disease transmissions in humans, partly because they are so difficult to spot.

Ticks are most active during spring and summer months, though they can remain active in fall and even mild winter days. They thrive in humid environments and are typically found in areas with dense vegetation where they wait for hosts. Knowing that ticks spend most of their time on plants rather than actively hunting on the ground helps explain why certain locations and times present higher risk than others.

Practical Takeaway: When heading outdoors during tick season (spring through early fall), remember that ticks wait passively on vegetation and crawl onto passing hosts. Most disease-transmitting ticks are small and easy to miss, so a combination of prevention strategies works better than relying on any single method.

Choosing Appropriate Clothing and Protective Gear

What you wear when spending time outdoors significantly influences your tick exposure risk. The most effective clothing strategy involves wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Light colors make ticks more visible, which helps you spot them before they attach. Loose-fitting clothes are preferable to tight clothing because they give ticks fewer places to grab onto fabric and crawl underneath.

Long pants tucked into socks or boots are particularly important when walking through areas with tall grass or brush. This simple adjustment creates a physical barrier that makes it harder for ticks to access skin on the legs and lower body. Similarly, long-sleeved shirts provide protection for arms. A hat or head covering can protect the scalp and hairline, areas where ticks commonly hide and may go unnoticed for longer periods.

Closed-toe shoes or boots are better than sandals or open-toed footwear. Boots that extend above the ankle offer more protection than shoes. If you're doing extensive outdoor activities in high-risk areas—such as hiking through woods or camping in brushy terrain—consider wearing gaiters, which are leg coverings that protect the area between boots and pants cuffs where ticks frequently attempt to crawl up the body.

Your clothing itself can be treated with permethrin, an insecticide that repels and kills ticks. Permethrin can be applied to clothing, shoes, camping gear, and mosquito netting. It works by making fabric toxic to ticks and other arthropods. Importantly, permethrin is applied to clothing rather than skin—it is not meant to be used as a body repellent. Many outdoor retailers sell permethrin-treated clothing, or you can purchase permethrin spray and treat your own garments. One application typically lasts through multiple washings, though you should follow product instructions for reapplication timing.

Practical Takeaway: Wear light-colored, long pants tucked into socks, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes when spending time in tick-prone areas. Treating your clothing with permethrin before heading outdoors adds an additional layer of protection by making fabric inhospitable to ticks.

Selecting Safe Outdoor Locations and Routes

Not all outdoor areas present equal tick risk. Understanding where ticks are commonly found helps you make informed decisions about which locations to visit and which routes to take through wooded or grassy areas. Ticks thrive in habitats with plenty of vegetation and moisture. Wooded areas with dense undergrowth, tall grasses, brush, and leaf litter are tick hotspots. Areas near fallen logs, dense shrubs, and overgrown trails present higher risk than mowed grass or open, sunny areas.

When walking through wooded or brushy areas, staying on cleared trails rather than bushwhacking through vegetation reduces your exposure significantly. Trails that are well-maintained and mowed are safer than overgrown trails, because ticks have fewer places to wait for hosts. Walking in the center of trails rather than brushing against vegetation on the sides further reduces contact with tick-harboring plants.

The edges between habitat types—called ecotones—often have high tick concentrations. The border between a mowed lawn and a wooded area, or between a maintained trail and thick brush, frequently has many ticks waiting for hosts. Being aware of these transition zones helps you move through them more cautiously, perhaps moving quickly rather than lingering in these areas.

Certain times of day may present lower risk in some situations. Ticks quest (wait for hosts) most actively during humid conditions and when moisture levels are high. Early morning hours when dew is present and damp days are times when ticks are most active and most likely to attach. Conversely, hot, dry, sunny days see reduced tick activity, though ticks can still be encountered. However, time of day should not be your primary prevention strategy—instead, focus on location selection and protective measures.

Practical Takeaway: Choose well-maintained trails over overgrown paths, and stay in the center of trails rather than brushing vegetation. When possible, visit open, sunny areas rather than dense wooded or brushy locations during peak tick season. If you must visit high-risk areas, take extra precautions with clothing and inspection.

Using Insect Repellents on Skin and Gear

In addition to permethrin-treated clothing, applying tick repellents directly to exposed skin provides an additional protective layer. The most effective skin repellents contain DEET (diethyltoluamide), picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. Of these options, DEET and picaridin are considered among the most effective for tick prevention. The Environmental Protection Agency maintains a list of registered repellents that have been tested for efficacy against ticks.

DEET concentrations range from approximately 10 percent to 30 percent in commercial products. Higher concentrations provide longer-lasting protection—a 30 percent DEET product may protect for up to six hours, while lower concentrations provide shorter protection periods. For tick prevention specifically, the CDC recommends using products containing 20 percent DEET or higher. Picaridin at concentrations of 19 to 20 percent provides protection duration comparable to DEET.

When applying skin repellent, cover all exposed skin, paying particular attention to areas where ticks commonly attach: behind the ears, on the hairline, around the neckline, inside the elbows, behind the knees, and on the ankles. Apply repellent to your hands first, then rub it onto exposed areas. Avoid applying repellent to areas where you might touch your face, to cuts or irritated skin, or to young children's hands. After returning indoors, wash off repellent with soap and water.

Repellent can also be applied to gear such as backpacks, tent edges, and the cuffs of pants. Some people create a protective barrier by applying repellent around the edges of clothing, particularly around cuffs, necklines, and where pants meet socks. This approach creates a chemical barrier that repels ticks attempting to crawl onto the body. However, this should supplement—not replace—
