Free Guide to Airport Security Programs and Screening

Overview of U.S. Airport Security Programs

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operates several programs designed to streamline the airport security screening process for travelers. These programs exist because standard security screening can take significant time, especially during peak travel periods. Understanding what these programs are and how they work can help travelers make informed decisions about their airport experience.

The main programs available include TSA PreCheck, which focuses on expedited screening for domestic flights; CLEAR, which uses biometric technology to verify identity; and Global Entry, which handles international arrivals. Each program has different costs, procedures, and benefits. Some programs are administered by TSA directly, while others partner with private companies or are run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

As of 2024, TSA PreCheck serves over 20 million members nationwide. CLEAR operates at more than 50 U.S. airports. These numbers show that many travelers use these programs regularly. However, not every airport offers every program, and not every airline participates in every program, even at airports where the program exists.

A key point to understand: these are membership or enrollment programs. They are not benefits you receive from the government. Instead, they are services offered by the TSA or private companies that you can use if you choose to enroll. The decision to use any of these programs is entirely voluntary.

Practical takeaway: Before your next trip, visit the official TSA website to see which programs operate at your departure and destination airports. This will help you understand what screening options exist where you travel most often.

TSA PreCheck: How Expedited Screening Works

TSA PreCheck is perhaps the most widely known airport security program. It offers a faster path through security screening at domestic U.S. airports. Members pass through dedicated PreCheck lanes that typically involve shorter wait times compared to standard screening lines.

Here's what happens when you use TSA PreCheck: You proceed to a dedicated security lane (marked "TSA PreCheck"). The screening process itself is less rigorous than standard screening. You can leave your shoes, light jacket, and belt on while going through the metal detector. You can keep laptops and liquids in your carry-on bag—they don't need to be removed. You typically go through a standard metal detector rather than advanced imaging technology. The entire process usually takes 5 to 10 minutes, compared to 20 to 30 minutes in standard lines.

The program costs $85 to $100 for a five-year membership. Members must be U.S. citizens or nationals, and most applicants must be at least 18 years old. The enrollment process includes an in-person appointment at an enrollment center where your fingerprints are taken and your identity is verified. There are roughly 350 enrollment centers across the United States.

TSA PreCheck is available at over 200 U.S. airports. Major hubs like Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York have multiple PreCheck lanes. However, smaller regional airports may have limited or no PreCheck lanes. Some airlines don't participate in PreCheck even at airports where the program operates, though this is rare for major carriers.

Wait times in PreCheck lanes vary by airport and time of day. During peak hours, PreCheck lines can still have waits of 10 to 15 minutes. Early morning flights typically have the shortest PreCheck wait times. Holiday travel periods see increased wait times across all security screening types.

Practical takeaway: Calculate whether TSA PreCheck makes sense for your travel patterns. If you take more than one or two round-trip flights per year, the membership fee can pay for itself through time savings. Check the TSA website to find enrollment centers near you.

CLEAR: Biometric Identity Verification at Security

CLEAR is a biometric identity verification program operated by a company called Clear Secure. It works alongside—not as a replacement for—TSA security screening. CLEAR allows you to skip the document and identification verification portion of security screening by using fingerprint or iris scan technology.

Here's how CLEAR works: You enter a dedicated CLEAR lane at the airport. A CLEAR representative scans your fingerprint or iris. The system confirms your identity within seconds. You then proceed directly to the TSA screening process (either standard or PreCheck, depending on your status). CLEAR members typically wait just 30 seconds to a few minutes in the CLEAR line, then proceed to TSA screening.

CLEAR operates at over 50 U.S. airports, including major hubs like Los Angeles, New York, Miami, San Francisco, and Chicago. The program is expanding, with new airports added regularly. However, not every airport has CLEAR. If you primarily fly from a smaller regional airport, CLEAR may not be available to you.

CLEAR membership costs $189 per year as a standalone service, though prices vary slightly by airport. Some TSA PreCheck members can add CLEAR for a lower price. Family memberships are available at higher cost. The membership is renewed annually and must be maintained through an active payment method.

To use CLEAR, you must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. During enrollment, you'll provide personal information and have your biometric data (fingerprints or iris scan) recorded. This data is stored securely and used only for identity verification at security checkpoints. CLEAR membership does not provide any immigration or border crossing benefits.

A common misconception: CLEAR does not replace TSA screening. You still go through all standard TSA security procedures after CLEAR confirms your identity. CLEAR only eliminates the document-checking step, which typically takes 2 to 5 minutes in standard lines.

Practical takeaway: CLEAR is most valuable if you travel frequently from an airport where CLEAR operates and you find the identity verification step to be your biggest security line bottleneck. Many frequent business travelers consider CLEAR useful; occasional leisure travelers may not find enough value to justify the annual cost.

Global Entry: International Arrival Processing

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program for returning U.S. citizens and permanent residents. It provides expedited processing when you return to the United States from international travel. Unlike TSA PreCheck, which focuses on outbound domestic security screening, Global Entry handles inbound customs and immigration procedures.

When you return to the U.S. on an international flight with a Global Entry membership, you can use automated passport control (APC) kiosks. These kiosks scan your passport and take your photograph. You complete the customs declaration process at the kiosk. You then proceed directly to baggage claim, bypassing traditional customs lines. In many cases, you don't interact with a customs officer at all unless flagged for secondary screening. The entire process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes instead of 30 to 60 minutes in standard customs lines.

Global Entry costs $100 for a five-year membership. The program is administered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and membership is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. You must be at least 18 years old. The enrollment process includes an in-person interview at a Global Entry enrollment center. There are roughly 70 Global Entry enrollment centers located primarily at international airports.

APC kiosks are installed at most major U.S. airports that handle international flights. However, smaller airports may not have APC technology. If an airport doesn't have APC kiosks, Global Entry members proceed through expedited officer-assisted lanes instead, which are still faster than standard customs lines.

An important detail: Global Entry can be combined with other programs. Some travelers use both TSA PreCheck and Global Entry: PreCheck for domestic outbound flights and Global Entry for returning from international travel. Some credit card companies offer Global Entry membership as a benefit for premium cardholders, which can reduce your out-of-pocket cost.

Practical takeaway: If you travel internationally more than once per year, Global Entry can provide substantial time savings during busy travel periods. The cost per international trip can be quite low if you calculate annual travel frequency. Check whether your credit card offers Global Entry as a benefit before paying for membership.

Standard Security Screening: What to Expect

Understanding standard airport security screening helps you know what to expect even if you don't use expedited programs. Standard screening applies to all passengers who don't have TSA PreCheck status. TSA officers conduct standard screening
