Free Guide to Afterpay Shopping at Walmart

Understanding Afterpay and How It Works at Walmart

Afterpay is a "buy now, pay later" service that lets you purchase items at Walmart and split the cost into smaller payments over time. Instead of paying the full amount upfront, you make four equal payments spread across eight weeks. The first payment happens when you complete your purchase, then you receive three additional payment reminders every two weeks after that.

The service operates as a separate payment method within the Walmart shopping experience. When you reach checkout on Walmart's website or mobile app, Afterpay appears as a payment option alongside traditional credit cards, debit cards, and other methods. You'll select Afterpay, and the system will guide you through connecting your payment method to Afterpay's platform. The payments then come from your bank account, debit card, or eligible credit card on the scheduled dates.

Afterpay does not charge interest on purchases. However, there are potential late fees if you miss a scheduled payment. According to Afterpay's structure, late fees may apply when payments are missed, though the specific amounts can vary by situation. This contrasts with traditional credit cards that charge interest daily on outstanding balances.

The payment schedule works like this: If you purchase a $100 item on a Monday, you pay $25 immediately. Two weeks later, you pay $25 again. Two weeks after that, another $25 payment processes. Finally, two weeks later, your fourth and final $25 payment completes the transaction. Throughout this entire eight-week period, you have full access to your purchased items.

Practical Takeaway: Before using Afterpay, add up all four payments to confirm you can manage the total cost. Set phone reminders for payment dates to avoid missing deadlines and potential fees.

Setting Up Afterpay for Your Walmart Account

Getting started with Afterpay at Walmart involves a straightforward process. First, you need a Walmart account if you don't already have one. Visit Walmart.com or open the Walmart mobile app, then create an account with your email address and password. This account is where your Afterpay payment history and purchase information will be stored.

When you're ready to make a purchase using Afterpay, add items to your cart as normal. Proceed to checkout and review your items and quantities. On the payment method page, look for "Afterpay" listed among the available payment options. Select Afterpay to continue. You'll be redirected to Afterpay's platform to complete the payment setup.

Afterpay will ask you to verify your identity and connect a payment method. You'll need to provide basic information such as your name, email address, phone number, and date of birth. The service performs a soft credit check, which doesn't affect your credit score the way a traditional loan application would. This check helps Afterpay determine whether to allow the purchase. Most checks take only a few minutes.

After verification, connect a payment method. You can use a debit card, credit card, or bank account linked through a service like Plaid. Afterpay will need the full card number, expiration date, and CVV (the three-digit security code on the back), or your bank account information for direct connections. Afterpay uses encryption to protect this information.

Once your payment method is connected, review the payment schedule showing exactly when each of your four payments will process. Confirm the details and complete the transaction. You'll receive a confirmation email with your order details and payment schedule. Save this email or the Afterpay reference number for your records.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your Afterpay payment method and contact information current. If your card expires or your phone number changes, update it in your Afterpay account settings to prevent missed or failed payments.

What You Can and Cannot Buy With Afterpay at Walmart

Afterpay works on most items available at Walmart.com and through the Walmart app, but certain restrictions apply. You can use Afterpay to purchase clothing, household goods, electronics, furniture, sporting equipment, toys, garden supplies, and many other general merchandise categories. Most everyday shopping needs are covered by the service.

However, specific categories are excluded from Afterpay purchases. Grocery and perishable food items cannot be purchased through Afterpay. Walmart+ memberships and subscription services are not available through Afterpay. Medications and pharmacy items generally cannot be purchased this way. Gift cards and prepaid cards are excluded. Fuel, tobacco, and alcohol also fall outside Afterpay's coverage at Walmart.

There are also limits on how much you can spend in a single Afterpay transaction. Walmart typically sets a maximum transaction limit, though this amount can vary based on your account history and payment method. Your first Afterpay purchase might have a lower limit—potentially $50 to $200—and this limit may increase as you demonstrate a pattern of on-time payments. The minimum purchase amount is usually around $35, though this can change.

In-store purchases at physical Walmart locations do not currently support Afterpay. The service is limited to online purchases through Walmart.com and the Walmart mobile app. If you want to use Afterpay, you must order items online and either have them delivered to your home or pick them up at a store location after ordering online.

Some sellers within the Walmart marketplace may also have restrictions. Afterpay coverage depends on whether the third-party seller participates in the program. You can identify whether a seller accepts Afterpay by looking for the Afterpay badge on the product page during shopping.

Practical Takeaway: Before adding items to your cart, check product pages for the Afterpay logo to confirm acceptance. Make a list of groceries or pharmacy items you need and plan to purchase those through other payment methods.

Managing Payments and Avoiding Late Fees

Once you've completed an Afterpay purchase, managing your payments is critical to avoiding fees and complications. Afterpay sends payment reminders through email and SMS text messages on or before each payment date. These reminders typically arrive a day or two before the payment is scheduled to process, giving you time to ensure sufficient funds are available in your connected account.

Your Afterpay account dashboard shows all upcoming payment dates and amounts. You can view this information anytime by logging into your Afterpay account through the app or website. This dashboard displays your payment history, current payment plans, and any upcoming due dates. Checking your dashboard regularly helps you stay organized, especially if you have multiple payment plans running simultaneously.

Late fees occur when a scheduled payment fails to process. Common reasons for payment failures include insufficient funds in your account, an expired card, a closed bank account, or incorrect account information. If a payment fails, Afterpay typically attempts to retry the payment within a certain timeframe. During this period, you may have the opportunity to update your payment method or add funds to prevent a late fee from being charged.

If a late fee is applied, the amount may vary but typically ranges from $7 to $8 per missed payment, depending on your location and Afterpay's policies at that time. This fee is in addition to your regular payment amount. Accumulating multiple late fees can make completing your purchase plan more expensive than originally intended. To avoid this, set personal reminders on your phone or calendar a few days before each payment date, separate from Afterpay's automated reminders.

If you're struggling to make a payment, contact Afterpay's customer service before the payment date. They may discuss options such as adjusting your payment schedule, pausing payments temporarily, or other solutions. Taking proactive steps is better than waiting until after a late fee applies.

Practical Takeaway: Set three phone alarms for each payment: one week before, three days before, and one day before the due date. Check your connected account's balance the day before to ensure funds are available.

Comparing Afterpay to Other Payment Options at Walmart

Afterpay is one of several "buy now, pay later" services available, but it's not the only option at Walmart. Understanding how Afterpay compares to alternatives helps you choose the best payment method for your situation.
