Free Guide to Adjusting Your Screen Refresh Rate

Understanding Screen Refresh Rate Basics

Screen refresh rate refers to how many times per second your display redraws the image shown on your monitor or laptop screen. This measurement is expressed in hertz (Hz). For example, a 60Hz display refreshes the image 60 times every second, while a 144Hz display refreshes 144 times per second. The higher the refresh rate, the more frequently your screen updates with new information.

The standard refresh rate for most computer monitors has been 60Hz for many years. This rate is sufficient for everyday computing tasks like browsing the internet, working with documents, and watching videos. However, gaming, video editing, and other motion-intensive activities can benefit from higher refresh rates. A 144Hz monitor displays motion more smoothly than a 60Hz monitor because it shows more frames per second, reducing the appearance of blur and stuttering during fast movement.

Your graphics processing unit (GPU) works together with your monitor's refresh rate. When your GPU produces 100 frames per second but your monitor can only display 60Hz, you won't see all those frames. This creates a mismatch between what your hardware can produce and what your display can show. Understanding this relationship helps explain why adjusting your refresh rate matters for different activities and user preferences.

Different types of displays have different native refresh rates. Traditional monitors typically display at 60Hz, 75Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz. Gaming monitors often range from 144Hz to 240Hz or higher. Laptop screens usually operate at 60Hz unless they're specifically designed for gaming. Mobile devices and tablets also have their own refresh rates, with many modern smartphones featuring 90Hz, 120Hz, or higher.

Practical Takeaway: Check your current monitor's specifications to learn its maximum refresh rate capability. This information typically appears in your device's user manual or on the manufacturer's website. Knowing your display's maximum refresh rate is the first step toward optimizing your screen settings.

How to Check Your Current Refresh Rate

Finding your current refresh rate on Windows is straightforward. Right-click on your desktop background and look for an option that says "Display settings" or "Screen resolution." This opens your display settings panel. Scroll down and look for a section labeled "Advanced display settings" or "Advanced options." Click this option to access more detailed information about your monitor.

In the advanced display settings, you'll see a section showing your monitor's current refresh rate. The display typically shows something like "60 Hz" or "144 Hz" next to a dropdown menu. This number represents your monitor's current setting. Write down this information, as you'll reference it if you decide to make changes.

For Mac users, the process differs slightly. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and select "System Preferences" or "System Settings" depending on your macOS version. Navigate to "Displays" and look for a "Refresh Rate" option. Some Mac models show this information in the "Resolution" dropdown menu. Click on the dropdown to see available refresh rate options for your display.

You can also use third-party software to check your refresh rate. Programs like GPU-Z (for NVIDIA graphics cards) or AMD Radeon Settings display detailed information about your graphics card and monitor capabilities. These tools show not only your current refresh rate but also the maximum refresh rate your monitor supports. Many people find these applications useful for monitoring multiple display parameters at once.

Some users prefer checking refresh rate information through their graphics card control panel. NVIDIA users can open NVIDIA Control Panel and navigate to "Change resolution" to see refresh rate options. AMD users can access AMD Radeon Settings through their graphics card menu. Intel integrated graphics users can find settings through Intel Graphics Command Center or their Windows display settings.

Practical Takeaway: Make a note of both your current refresh rate and your monitor's maximum supported refresh rate. Having this information readily available helps you understand what changes are possible and what improvements your specific hardware can offer.

Adjusting Refresh Rate on Windows Systems

To change your refresh rate on Windows, start by right-clicking your desktop and selecting "Display settings." Scroll down to the bottom of the display settings window and click on "Advanced display settings." This opens a new window with more detailed display options. Look for a dropdown menu or link that says "Refresh rate" or shows your current refresh rate (such as "60 Hz").

Click the dropdown menu next to the refresh rate option. Your monitor's available refresh rates appear in this list. For example, you might see options ranging from 48 Hz to 144 Hz, depending on your monitor's capabilities. Select the refresh rate you want to use. Higher numbers mean more frequent screen refreshes, which create smoother motion during gaming or video work. However, not all monitors support all refresh rates.

After selecting your new refresh rate, Windows typically asks you to confirm the change. You'll usually see a confirmation dialog that says something like "Do you want to keep these settings?" You have about 15 seconds to confirm before Windows reverts to the previous setting. Click "Keep changes" if the display looks good and you want to apply the new refresh rate permanently. If the screen appears distorted or doesn't look right, simply wait for the automatic revert or click "Revert" to return to your previous settings.

Some users experience issues when changing refresh rates. If your screen goes black or displays become unstable, don't panic. Windows automatically reverts to the previous refresh rate after about 15 seconds if you don't confirm the change. If you want to troubleshoot, check that your monitor is connected properly with a working cable. Make sure your graphics drivers are updated to the latest version available from your GPU manufacturer's website.

Connection type matters when setting refresh rate. Displays connected through HDMI, DisplayPort, or DVI cables may support different maximum refresh rates. For example, older HDMI versions might cap refresh rate at 60Hz even if your monitor supports higher rates. DisplayPort typically supports higher refresh rates than HDMI. Checking your cable type and specifications helps explain why certain refresh rate options might not appear in your dropdown menu.

Practical Takeaway: Start by trying a refresh rate increase of 30Hz above your current setting. For instance, if you're at 60Hz, try 90Hz. Monitor your display stability and temperature for a few hours before making further adjustments. This gradual approach helps you find the optimal setting for your specific hardware.

Adjusting Refresh Rate on Mac Systems

Mac users access refresh rate settings through System Preferences or System Settings, depending on their macOS version. Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select "System Preferences" (on older macOS versions) or "System Settings" (on newer versions like Ventura and Sonoma). Look for an icon that looks like a monitor or screen and click on "Displays."

Once in the Displays settings, you'll see information about your current display. Look for a section labeled "Resolution" or "Refresh Rate." On some Mac models, the refresh rate option appears directly in this window. On others, you may need to click a button labeled "Scaled" or "Resolution" to see additional options. When you see the refresh rate menu, click on it to view available options for your display.

Select your preferred refresh rate from the dropdown menu. Mac displays typically offer several options, often ranging from 60Hz to the maximum your monitor supports. Newer Mac models with ProMotion technology can support much higher refresh rates, sometimes up to 120Hz on MacBook Pro models or even higher on external displays. After selecting your new refresh rate, the changes usually apply immediately without requiring confirmation.

Some Mac users find that their desired refresh rate option doesn't appear in the list. This often happens when using third-party monitors or older displays. The limitations may be due to cable type, graphics card capabilities, or driver compatibility. Updating to the latest macOS version sometimes adds support for higher refresh rates. Additionally, using higher-quality cables like Thunderbolt or USB-C cables instead of older HDMI connections may unlock additional refresh rate options.

For Mac users with multiple displays connected, each monitor's settings are adjusted separately. Click on the desired display in your System Settings to adjust its specific refresh rate. This is particularly useful for creative professionals who may use different monitors for different purposes, such as one display for video editing and another for email and messaging.
